Good news everyone!

Nearly four years after it was cancelled, the popularity of Futurama on DVD could breathe life back into the animated television series. On the subject of a rumoured resurrection, creator Matt Groening, best known for his other animated hit, The Simpsons, says, intriguingly: "You never know."

Such a trail was blazed in 2004 by another animated series, Family Guy. Fuelled by DVD sales and high-rating reruns, it spawned a direct-to-DVD film and two seasons of television episodes.

The move caught the television industry by surprise, and left several lost properties, including Futurama, ripe with possibility.

"Three months ago, I would have said we were going to start tomorrow," says writer David X. Cohen, who collaborated with Groening on Futurama. "And one month ago I would also have said we were going to start tomorrow. So ..." He pauses. "My current estimate is that we're starting tomorrow."

Indeed... that is good news. Yet old one and beside that not really anything we didn't already know.  ;)

We got that link from DotheBartman - Article: "Off the Planet" last week already. And that Futurama the direct to DVD movie is awaiting to be greenlit as even older news - about half a year old now.  ;)

Welcome to PEEL goodnews,

enjoy your stay here  :)

I read that article in The Age (Melbourne's version of the Sydney Morning Herald). Interesting enough, but nothing concrete. There is definatly a big chance of something happening though.

Interesting if true. I really hope there is hope! Although I might die of happiness if Futurama ever comes back.

A squerl, eh? Sounds... interesting...

It's a definite possibility for the show to gain enough momentum through reruns and DVD sales.  Family Guy last aired sometime in 2002 and didn't officially resurface until May 2005.  Futurama last aired in August of 03, so it's possible for a late 06 or early 07 rebirth

If they restart a cancelled show, I would hope that it would be Firefly.

Three months ago, I would have been rooting for Futurama, but three months ago I was younger and not so wise as I am today.

does it strike anyone else as a bad sign that Groening responce to the question of whether or not futurama could be resurrected was 'you never know"?  It might just be me, but that's a phrase I associate with things that have little chance of happening.  Someone please tell me I'm wrong, because I desperately don't want to be right.

There isn't a whole lot of stuff said in that interview, but it does make me want to go out and buy Volume 4 to finish off my DVD collection.

Volume 4 is probably the best one, Jay.  Of course, I cannot pick favorites because I love them all like  like my metaphorical children.

I think that with Australian audiences now watching the show that it could send FOx a message to return it, though I hope for a movie more than another series.

Jensor, it has many of my favorite eps, I just haven't gotten around to buying it.  Mas, that IMDB thing is hardly factual, and has been discussed on the board many times.  Still, that link does give me hope, and each time I think of a Futurama movie being made, I get pangs of joy about the show.
