A show made off the succes of another show by using characters from the latter. In essence the characters are spun off into their own show.

A good example is "Frasier" being a spin off of "Cheers".

Angel is a spin-off of Buffy.
Daria was a spin-off of Beavis and Butthead.

CSI and Law and Order also have a lot of spin-offs but instead of using the characters of other shows they just use the formats.
