Some of you may already know this or it may have already been posted however I thought that I will post a link to the Apple comercial released in 1984: http://esm.psu.edu/Faculty/Gray/graphics/movies/1984.mov

...look familiar?     ;)

EDIT: If the above link does not work due to server problems then use http://members.iinet.net.au/~carbito/1984.mov

Hey cool.  I'm too young to have actually seen the ad when it first aired.

Well, yes that was the point of the commericial in FS, to spoof the original from the 1980s...

I think that Apple ad ended up becoming the most successful TV ad of all time.

heh, same here. I did not even exist back in 1984  ;) so therefore when I saw this ad I was like oh...now I get it and that Futurama episode is so much more enjoyable.

Yeah, the commercial only aired once, during the 1984 Superbowl.

An interesting side note, John Di Maggio was in a TNT movie called "Pirates of Silicon Valley" which was about Microsoft and Apple in the 70's & 80's which features that commercial. He mentions it in the FS commentary, but I've seen the movie and noticed he was in it.

A lot of Super Bowl commercials only air once though, right?  I think the point isn't for the commercial to play a lot, but for it to make a huge impact and get people talking about it (hence being used in the super bowl, when so many people are watching).  That commercial is pretty famous so I always assumed it did it's job.

I don't see what about that ad would make people actaully talk about it... If it was not for its Futurama reference then I would not have payed any particular attention to it.

Neither link works for me...
But I wanna see the ad...
When they said on the commentary that it was a parody of a famous ad I wondered if it would be onthe internet somewhere but I never actually went to look for it.
So... can you get another link, or do I just have to deal with it?

It had to have aired more than once, because I remember seeing it.  And I sure wasn't watchin' the Superbowl.

Not a very good ad then, it's made by Apple.

That ad was a parody of a Super Bowl commercial.  It was from Apple Computers and they were really huge in 1984.  And also, the commercial was popularizing on that novel and movie 1984.

The guy on the screen was supposed to be "Big Brother" that evil megalomaniac in the book who was everywhere you saw him.  If you didn't like Big Brother you were considered insane and he believed that 2+2=5 and not 4.  I remember we read the book in high school.

It may not have been the most successful ad, but I think that it's one of the most instantly recognizable ones.

You already said you didn't even exist when it first aired (and neither did I, so for the record I'm not trying to be pretentious here).  It may not seem all that memorable now, especcially with how extreme and ridiculous commercials have gotten, but at the time it was really unique and got people talking the way the most carefully created Super Bowl ads do now.

Also, remember that this was in a different time and context, when it seemed more possible for a company with a new machine to become really successful.  Thanks to Bill Gates, that's no longer the case in 2005.

Not one out of those three links worked on my computer. I feel you're pain, smision... and I want to see it really bad now that everyone is saying that it was so famous.

In what way are the links not working? Are you unable to connect to the server or do the clips just not load?

It just never reaches the halfway mark... it tries to load, but it just stops a mark away from the halfway point. I've waited a good 15 minutes, yet it never gets anywhere.. I don't ever see any progress in the window either, it's just blank.   :(

I have this on some old vhs tape back home!

I saw it a few time when I was younger. It use to play late at night. (Around 7:30pm to 10:00pm)

I was 5 years old at that time and I still remember it!
