To be fair, I think the formulas you described for an average episode of The Simpsons really only apply to the more recent episodes; in the early years, though the episodes conformed to certain norms, I think the execution was completely original and compelling.

I don't think Futurama is necessarily better than The Simpsons, and I don't think The Simpsons is necessarily better than Futurama. By virtue of how long it's been on the air, it's only natural that The Simpsons would be stale at this point. But, when you compare five-ish seasons of Futurama with the first five seasons of The Simpsons, I think they're both comparable in the quality department. But they both have completely different premises, and that's where the true differences are, IMO. Futurama's premise is obviously much more flexible, so I think, if it were to run for ten more seasons, it would be able to maintain its quality (or, at the very least, remain fresh), in a way that The Simpsons wasn't able to do, for various reasons.

But I'm a huge fan of both shows, so I may be inclined towards neutrality here.

I'm with Gorky. While my loyalty lies with the simpsons, I love futurama the same.

I probably prefer to watch any random classic Simpsons episode than any random Futurama episodes. Mostly because Simpsons have so many more episodes and variety. I've seen all of Futurama to death. (not literally)

I can't believe ten years later we're still having this discussion because Simpsons is still on the air  However, I am being a bit of a hypocrite because the only reason I watched Futurama to begin with was because of The Simpsons. I think the show has proven though it has far more possibilites than the Simpsons, if only due to the fact that it IS set in the year 3000 with almost anything being possible in the future.

As time has gone on it's only cemented my opinion that Futurama is the better show. Of course The Simpsons has turned from rather bad when this thread was originally made, into a rotting dead animal carcass riddled with maggots desperate to eat its remains but somehow struggling as it's too tough for them to chew through from all those years of forced artificial life while their fly ancestors continue to eat and then puke their guts up all over it in a recycled orgy of despair...

Futurama on the other hand has fresh life and although it doesn't get it right every week, when it does (TLPJF, Möbius Dick, Cold Warriors) it shines like a beacon of pure joy and hilarity spreading much goodness and enjoyment throughout the land, and those who feast their eyes upon its glory will be enlightened by its rich tapestry of joy. Then there's the original 72; sure they may be lower in number than The Simpsons, but hell I'd take them over The Simpsons any day! In my opinion the best Futurama is better than the best Simpsons and that's something I've always thought which hasn't changed in ten years!...

I used to hate modern simpsons until I stopped comparing it to what it once was, I now take it for what it is, and I've gone back watching episodes that I once hated with more of an open mind, and I'm glad I did. There's still the odd bad episode here and there, but that's to be expected after so many years.

Futurama is obviously the better show, but the Simpsons is a great show.

I am starting to worry about the lifespan of Futurama given certain episodes this season (it is pretty unforgiveable to make a blunder such as Yo Leela Leela this late in the series), but at least they still tend to churn out some good episodes. My favorite of 6B thus far has been Law and Oracle, which seemed right there with the other greats of the classic run. And it wasn't even really due to that much of a sci-fi plot - Fry becomes a cop, and has turn in Bender. It's a very down to earth episode that suprisngly got high marks, which is what I think makes the show great. Futurama is versatile; it can be both great with the ultra sci fi plots (like TLPJF) but it can also be wonderful with the character development episodes (LAO).

I don't think there's been a single ep I have disliked/hated in 6B, besides Yo Leela Leela. And even that one had a good first act. :hmpf:
