I have a bet going about "War is the H-Word." Was Leela masquarading as Lee Lemon in any way a reference to Mulan? I say nay, but I can't find any information confirming or denying this.

From tv.com

"Woman dressing up as a man to join the army
The idea of a woman dressing up as a man to join the army may be based on the Disney movie Mulan, which is loosely based on Hua Mulan, a Chinese woman who joined an all-male army by disguising herself as a man to take her father's place."

That's the only thing that I've ever seen that confirms it...

I don't believe it's directly related to 'Mulan'. As Nasty Pasty said, "The idea of a woman dressed as a man to join the army has been thrown around alot..."

Women dressing as men was fairly common during the Civil War.  Some historians estimate no fewer than 400 women donned either blue or gray.  I'd imagine it was easier to do when nobody expected a woman to want to fight so nobody would check.
