The REAL thing? Well, it depends on who you're asking...

What's known is that Roswell was a town near some kind of secret Air Force base. A aircraft crashed there, and soem guy reported it as being an Extra-Terrastrial vehicle. The papers up and ran with the story, before the US Air Force relased a statement saying the it was a crashed weather ballon.
Conspiracy theorists have been speculating ever since.
