Judging from the story boards they took out alot of material, perhaps it was intended for an hour?

:dreams: original hour pilot on DVD :dreams:

Usually, tv shows produce more material than they need to just in case.  In Futurama's history, they had a pretty complex pilot and a lot of information to pack into it.  The pilot's length could be because the writers wanted to address each topic, or because FOX made them cut time out for commercials.

Story boards always have a lot more material at first. While writing an episode, it's very hard to judge how long it will go for until the animatic is done. They usually write more material than they need - since it's theoretically much easier to cut stuff out than add stuff in.

Maybe fox wouldnt let them use it because they were unsure.  Futurama is a great show and creative and all, but in the hands of top Fox executives, it may have come off as a bit too wierd or unreasonable.  And im not bringing down Futurama, casue Fox knows deep inside themselves that Futurama could be as big as the Simpsons, but those people at Fox can be picky it seems.

It just doesn't seem as if it was going to be an hour. The animatic was about 30 minutes long - an hour show would have to be about 44 minutes long, and considering how animatics are usually a little longer for reasons I mentioned before, that'd mean the animatic would have to be something like 50 minutes long for an hour show. The animatic was just longer than usual since it was the pilot and they had a bit more to address, that's it.

I'd say that there was probably just a certain over-ambition as they were writing it, since it was the very first script of a show they were really excited about making.  Notice that a lot of the deleted segments (primarily ones never animated, even for the animatic) were scenes showing Fry's past.  They had to be cut to make room for some of the action that needed more room.

Incidentally, I remember noticing that one of the deleted segments was also going to reveal Fry's birthday (which I also thought was cool since it was, I'm pretty sure, July 13th, my own birthday).
