Sci Fi films influences?

I'm doing an essay on Futurama for my course and wanted to ask what sort of old robot and sci fi movies inspired Matt Groening and Futurama? Any help would be grand. Thanks :-)

2001: a space oddessy, soylent green, all the star trek movies, and many others, the show is packed with references to nearly every sci-fi film, old and new.
