Just wondering what other artists who inhabit these boards use to do their scans, original artwork..

Me, I use...

For scans :

Paintshop Pro 6 to clean up the original framegrab a bit..
Then Into Flash 4 to trace them (definitely NOT using the "Trace Bitmap" tool because it's crap!)
Then export from Flash as a GIF (thanks to whoever mentioned this tip before)
then into Paintshop Pro again to alias things slightly...or to correct the colours (flash has this annoying habit of being hopeless at both colour matching and retaining its colours once you publish something!)

For original artwork :

Big fat wodges of A4 Dalerboard. Fat RS Permanent Markers and for fine work, a calligraphy pen with thin nib.
Then colour with either undiluted acrylics or poster paint.

(See? Two years at art college weren't wasted! I now use my "talents" to draw silly futurama pics all day!)

To begin with i use Virtual dub to look for nice frames to grab (Great freeware video-editing software, try it out).
After that i move the grabs into Illustrator 9 for traceing. Usually i work in Preview mode, it gives better control over the splines. I don't do any coloring in Illustrator unless it's for an outline that has different color (like Leelas lips). When thats done and there are no gaps in the trace i export it in 150 dpi BMP to Imageready and color it (Imageready is GREAT for transparent GIFs). There is usually a lot of fiddling about with the colors as all the mpegs are different.:/
After that i resize it to whatever it's going to be for, to get that smooth anti-aliased edge.

And for original art. Just about any random piece of paper i find lying around on the desk, like the back of the Simpsons calendar or monopoly money.

Someone should make a step-by-step tutorial on how to make scans.

can you explain or make a small tutorial how you make them with Adobe illustrator, your scans are better than mine, so I think the illustrator way must be better... I use the homerdrive one, that's the classic way... please explain us it  :)

Ok, here we go. First draft of the tutorial. You should know, I really suck at explaining things. And this is my first tutorial ever.
I will be adding pictures and some fancy HTML later. Anyway, check it out here.
plank's overly complicated scan-making tutorial 1.0
Tell me what you think. Comment on my horrible spelling and grammar. And if it's too complicated or too damn stupid just let me know.  :)

I'm currently using a combination of Fireworks 3 and PSP 5.  I'm using PSP for most of the colouring, and Fireworks for the tracing.

My first attempt using the Plank method... I need some more practice... but it seems to be easier than my normal method

Looking good Slimmy!
Im glad someone could make sense of my incoherent ramblings.  :) And, yes, it IS a lot easier than doing it the homerdrive-way. That thing actually requires TALENT.  :)

if anyone wants to do scans, do it the plank way, but you have to have a little knowledge of Adobe Illustrator 9, or be a computer wizz like me and learn it in a couple of hours :P

I did things the old fashioned way by tracing by hand, as I don't have the right software for the Plank method.

Anyway, here's my first fanart:

Mine get a little rough around the edges too.  I've found that making the lines a little thicker takes care of most of it.

Yeah, the original image was made at about 1600x1000 or something like that.  I made the lines 15 thick.  Perhaps I should have antialiased them a bit more.  I might redo it that way.

Here's another one of Cubert, this time using colour gradients.  I've also based a few wallpapers on it.

You can get the full size wallpapers at my site (http://cubert.rebelferret.net)
