Preamble by [-mArc-]: This is now a very very old thread. I herewith nominate it for the Test-of-Time Award and will pin it to the top of the Information Booth as it still holds much truth. Most [wikipeelia]PEELer[/wikipeelia]s will have a nice stay at PEEL if they follow the guidelines described by Kryten.

A lot of new members have joined us recently, so I thought I'd clarify a few things. Remember, we can all have a great time if we follow the

RULES OF THE ROAD

  • Stay on-topic. Wanna talk about Futurama? Go to the General forum. Wanna discuss other shows? Head for "It's Got a TV!" Wanna just talk crap? Take it to Off-Topic.
  • This isn't a chatroom.  Wanna talk to just one person in particular? Use AIM or MSN Messenger, or just good-old E-mail.
  • Behave with respect for one another. Don't make me turn this message board around and go home!
  • No d0wnl0adz questions. I can't stress this enough.
  • Keep it legal. Don't try to sell your pyramid schemes or WaReZ here.
  • Stick to English. Not everyone understands Danish.

Not too bad, right? Just follow these rules and I won't have to hunt you down and kill you like a dog.

Any questions?

I'm not a moderator or an admin, but I propose these rules:

- Don't link illegal stuff

- Keep the order in the numbered topics

Oh! I got some...
Check for older topics BEFORE posting the same thing
and
Don't revive old topics just for the hell of it, have something relevent to say if you do.
and
Excessive posting on the topics of: Anime (in all its forms), Osama Bin Ladin, and people's opinion of you will only agrivate your fellow PEELers.

Ripped from www.truemeaningoflife.com  's forum:

Quote
The Noble 8 Fold Path of Forum Conduct

Following the 8 Fold Path of Forum Conduct will make your stay at the Virtual Meditation Chamber more harmonious. Straying from the path may have negative effects on your karma.

Right Relevance - The number of posts you have is not a subject for discussion nor pride, and neither is the lack of posts of another something which calls for ridicule. The same goes for registration date.

Right Confrontation - While spirited debate is good for exercising the mind, baseless personal insults and slander may have harmful effects on your ability to post.

Right Images - Images posted in the Virtual Meditation Chamber must be safe for those supplicants viewing from work or public computer labs.

Right Linking - If you choose to post a link with material that may not be work-safe it must be accompanied by a warning.

Right Substance - Post when you have something to say. Posts made of boredom with no content may find themselves removed, and repeat offenders may follow. Posts consisting solely of a smiley or just one word do not contain right substance.

Right Privacy - Do not post the personal information of anyone but yourself. This includes their full name, address, or phone number.

Right Signature - Keep your signature size in check. If the signature is larger than an average post, it is too large.

Right Compliance - The moderators and administrators have the duty of cleaning up after those who have strayed from the path. They do not need help from nor the approval of the supplicants.

Cleaned, [-bUmp-]ed, and added to:

If you are mad because your post was deleted, I don't care.
If you are mad because your thread gets locked away, I don't care.
If you are mad because someone else's thread doesn't get locked away, I don't care.
If you are mad about being edited, I don't care.
If you are mad because you feel like you're being singled out, I don't care. And you're not.
If you are mad that I don't care, I don't care. Furthermore, I just don't want how mad you are to be a part of the forum.

If you don't like this simple set of rules, then feel free to get off [-mArc-]'s property. If he decide he doesn't want a Jeff K fanclub meeting in every thread, or a he-man woman hater's club auxilliary meeting, or descriptions of popular media in terms of whether or not it is homosexual, that's his business.

And if you're now saying to yourself, "But I never did that!", realize that other people have, and I apologize if that costs you your martyr complex.

The sole determining factor in whether a post is edited, deleted, or moved is moderator discretion. That's all it ever will be. User opinion will never, ever, be a factor, so just get used to it. If you think a particular post or thread is stupid, then the only suggestion I have is to not post in it. Posting your guesses as to the ultimate fate of a thread or post is a major waste of bandwidth.

A good way to think of moderation is that it's like V.D.: if you don't post it can't happen, and if it does it can be hard to get rid of. Let intelligence and proper english be your prophylactic.

I guess this rule never crossed over from the old Complaints and Arguments thread, so I'll just say it now.

Don't tell a mod to close a thread.  It's rude to the poster and the mods.  I don't tell you how to do your job, do I?

I am one of the worst offenders of this but you must understand for new members it's hard to know all the topics that came before us. When there is like 9 pages in a fourm it's hard to go through and look for a topic like that. Also the srarch is not always that effective becasue most times the topic is not that clear from the title.

and that's understandable.  Just don't take it personally when the old thread is dug up.  It's not personal, believe me.  I hate everyone here the same.

You click it to e-mail mArc to alert him of people breaking the rules or doing something that is seriously wrong.

Now, this isn't really a rule as much as it is a strong suggestion, but please, please don't quote pictures unless it's on the previous page.  A funny pic loses its hilarity when it's shown more than once on the same page, especially if it's repeated 3-4 times.

Due to current things, let me clear up on a little virtual rule:

No posting texts, links or pictures of things that need an age disclaimer. If it needs a disclaimer to be linked, it doesn't go on PEEL. The most common thing would be porn (and animated porn). We don't need that here and I don't want that here.

Someone's actually posting animated porn on PEEL?? See, this is why I usually don't go into the FanArt section.

While I can see certain Fan Arts being a little over-the-line, full-blown pornography concerning animated characters just doesn't do it for me. At least put a warning over it, but only if it's really really worthwhile.

Obviously it was an important announcement about our humble porn being infested with Futurama porn, probably with Zoidberg and Amy and Bender...

OK, I have a complaint.  When a thread gets to the 18th-19th pages, several PEELers (especially a certain newbie) insist on posting state-the-obvious comments like "This thread has one page left", "This thread will soon end" etc.

Personally I think these posts should be considered spam.

I just have a question.  Obviously I'm new here.  Why are you guys so strict?  I'm not trying to critisize, it's just that I belong to quite a few forums, and this one has by far the most rules.  Is bandwidth a really big problem on this site? Limited storage?  And another thing....why can't there be download questions?  Do you guys not approve of it or are there just too many questions about it?  Just wondering these things.......

Bandwith and storage are always of concern, but more so is deteriorating chit chat taking its toll on actual worthwhile topics.

Download talk counts as that as it serves no further discussion purpose and has extra feature of being illegal (also certainly not approving of the kind of downloading that involves not buying DVDs/Calendars/Comics).

What exactly is the accepted sig (that uses an image) size?
The sigs that I've seen don't seem to conform to the 16k
and 120 pixel high max as mentioned in the profile editing area.

Which signatures are those? I've not seen any and the script doesn't let you upload files larger then those limits.

The limits are on the PEELers' FAQ.

The only reason i can think of them being over the limit is if you're looking at very old posts from before that rule was introdcued, it's only about 1 year old or so.

Just a disclaimer: I don't consider these the "official" rules.  I would say that only things that come down from mArc and/or slimmy should be considered "official."  I would say these are more interpretations and natural evolution of the "official" rules, which would be found here.

Just out of curiousity, what happened to the PEEL FAQ?  I looked it up on aslate's site, and apparently that part of the Fry Hole is down.  I searched on-board, yet I couldn't find a really solid FAQ for n00bies.  I know I've mentioned this a lot before, but can we please have some sticky threads for FAQ and stuff?

That's the PEEL FAQ, still works. It's been that for just over a month, since TFH was moved from the original server.

How much time must pass before a thread is not able to be brought back, or "bumped" as us PEELers like to say?
