This is pasted right from an email I sendt to AskFOX...

"This is the question that is on the lips of every fan of Matt Groening's
masterpiece, Futurama.
Now with the end of season 4, and the fact that it's actually been canceled
makes people worry... will there be a season 5, will it be sendt on Fox, and
will the other seasons be avaiable on DVD anytime soon?"

...and here's the reply...

"FUTURAMA will be back next Season will a full season of ALL-NEW episodes!!!

Thanks for writing

ASKFOX"

That's cool and all, but all the episodes showing next year are already done and are from production seasons 3 and 4. Fox hasn't renewed Futurama for the 2003-2004 season, and knowing the lead times needed to make an animated show of this caliber, you won't see any more Futurama after the remaining episodes air unless Fox renews it very soon.

Sounds like good news, good to hear, but what about season 6?

Why have so many people got it into their heads that FOX wouldn't show the remaining episodes in the 2002/03 season?  They've axed so many programmes that they'll have more gaps than schedule next season, and given the choice between going to the trouble of making new programmes, and airing something that's already been made, what do you think they'd choose?

Because they are fighting so hard to kill Futurama, without executing it outright. It doesn't make much sense, but then, FOX's handling of Futurama has NEVER made sense, except in the most childish schoolyard-politics fashion:

(1) How many times will King of the Hill and The Simpsons run next week? More times than Futurama, which is "on production hiatus"--why?--because it's backlogged. To anyone who understands how this is supposed to make things better: Seek medical help immediately. You have an open head wound.

(2) FOX's response to the uproar? To the petition? To the bestselling status overseas of the DVD set? To the favorable reviews the show still gets in the media? To the e-mail and snail mail campaign? They deliberately shut down the extra-late season extra-early. The Great FOX Plan so far: Wait for football season. Schedule Futurama. Pre-empt. Pre-empt. Pre-empt. Pre-empt. And so on. With a full summer ahead of us with plenty of opportunities to air Futurama, let's SIT on this backlog we're so concerned about. (Just remember: America's Most Wanted and Family Guy got reprieves when fans made a little noise. Futurama got treated worse.)

(3) FOX has a ridiculous number of projects in development. This suggests they're developing everything brought before them, throwing it all at the wall, and keeping whatever sticks. Right now, Greg The Bunny is sticking. They will run with that ball for a season or two, then throw it in the garbage in favor of the newest flavor-of-the-month, be it more cheap-to-make "reality" trash or "Who Wants To Have Butt-Sex With A Millionare?" Watch it happen.

Matt Groening has saved FOX's bacon more than once--but isn't awed by FOXecutives and their "brilliant" strategies. This is a crime for which they feel they must punish him, and besides, they never "got" Futurama to begin with. However, they don't want him running off, in case they need him again, so they took Futurama, which was a major hit, broke its legs, and are waiting excitedly to tell Groening they had to shoot it to put it out of its misery because its legs were broken. They think he's too stupid to understand what they're doing.

Who can understand the FOX way of thinking? You don't stay Number Four for no reason. One particular episode of The Tick, I am told, aired three times during the show's short life. In spite of that, one episode never aired.

Pet Theory: FOX will cancel the show this summer to ensure the unaired, never-seen episodes help sell the final DVD set. But I'm probably giving them waaay too much credit. They'll probably do it just because they can.

They'll never actually "Cancel" Futurama - they'll just keep airing it more and more eratically until such time as they can say nobody is watching it (how can viewers watch it if they can't find it?) and they'll let it quietly die.  It's all about money and control, and about insane folks running networks.

I'm hoping that all 16 remaing episodes will air next season. We already knew there would be a new, so called fith season, but what we don't know is wether they'll pad it out so much that they'll still have episodes left over after their fith Season has aired.

I think the success of the DVDs will encourage either more DVDs (as in Series 2) and maybe persuade more series to be bought.

I wouldn't put it past fox to air eight eps next season, then call the remaining eight season six..

It does raise the question of how the DVDs are going to be treated outside the US. At the moment, it looks like they're being done by production block rather than by season, so what happens when they get to the 3ACV episodes? Will we get a sticker on the box saying 'DVD EXCLUSIVE! TWO NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN EPISODES!' ('A Tale Of Two Santas' doesn't look like it'll be appearing any time soon on Sky, thanks to the 7pm timeslot.) And as for the 4ACV shows... who knows?

In "Satellite TV Magazine" they gave a run down of the events which will take place within Sky Ones Season 4, Coolio guest starring as Kwanzabot was mentioned. They'll probably air it at the very end of the season, if they do there will still be the matter of "The Route Of All Evil" though :hmpf:

The horrible thought occurs that Fox may well start doing the DVD sets by season rather than by production block simply because it means they'll be able to squeeze another £30 out of us...
