The scary thing about this? It actually works as a sort of sequel to A Pharoah To Remember. In that one, Bender created a huge version of himself for "his people" to worship; here he is given tiny people who worship him. This time, it was SO much better...

I watched it again, and I still didn't really find it funny. It kind of pisses me off that a boring concept like the egypt planet got so many funny gags, while a good story like this one goes mostly laughless.

Also, maybe it's just me, but the delivery seemed kind of off to me. Zoidberg's "hooray, people are paying attention to me" and especially Fry's "blah blah blah blah blah blah" should have been funny, but instead I cringed at the annoyingness.

First impression: This episode was great. Way better than Pharaoh. Put this in the top-3 of the season so far (with Roswell and Homeplanet). Funniest bits so far: the battle at the start, Benders "miracles", the commandment, the monks and their "martial art" (and Leela's reaction to that) and Benders piano session. Stunning visuals, and some nice hints (2001, Star Trek:TMP among other)

"Is there anything religion can do to help me find my friend?"
"Well, we could join together in prayer."
"Aha, but is there anything usefull we can do?"
"No!"

Some more thoughts, when I've rewatched it a few times (you have been warned).

I missed that gag!  Now I'm going to have to rewatch it tonight to try to pick up on any other gags I missed.

BTW, my VCR chopped off the beginning part.  What was the "opening gag" (if there was one -- e.g. Glagnar's Human Rinds) and the tagline (e.g. "Made with luv by monsters&quot ;)?

They completely cut off the theme song in Florida. We got the last two seconds of the ship crashing through the buildboard, so i never got to see the tagline.

In my opinion, it definintely wasn't as bad as "A Pharoah to Remember" but it still could've been just a little bit better. I think it was a solid B+ episode. I liked the message Bender got from God. "If I do too much for my people, they will become dependent on me. But if I do too little they will start to loose faith in me." That is so true. The only thing I'm getting a bit sick of is all of the Bender episodes. So far this season we've had, "Love and Rocket," "A Tale of Two Santas," "A Pharoah to Remember," and now "Godfellas." We could use a few more Fry episodes and definintely a lot more Leela episodes. Also we can't forget about the episodes with Hermes, Zapp Brannigan, Dr. Zoidberg, Amy, Kif, Farnsworth, and Mom. Well, enough about that...I got way off the subject. "Godfellas," was a pretty good episode.

This episode holds up very well even after repeated viewing. Very solid work. I gave it 4 on the voting thingy.

Compared to Faraoh this episode was a big improvement. Bender was Bender. Lazy, selfish, alcoholic and yet with the soft side we know he has (even though he would never admit it). Benders travel through space was nice (and with some great visuals). The carving of the Voyager (or is it Pioneer?) picture, complete with Benders personal touch, was a way better show of Benders love for himself than anything last week. The Shrimpies was a great idea (if a bit remiscent of a THOH ep.) and Benders godship was hillarious. The commandment was great, if predictable. "God Needs Booze" indeed. And all Benders "miracles", pure fun. "That was a practice-miracle." "When you're writing the Bible you might wanna omit that last miracle."  :laff: The reast of the Shrimpies part was equally good. Great stuff.

Fry and Leela's part of this was pretty solid too. Fry's search for a way to contact Bender was neat. The fortune telling machine was funny (has it been in another episode?) The trip to Himalaya was nice. "Well you obviously won't listen to reason, so I guess I'll listen to idioticness and come with you."

Okay, short parts I like: The battle at the start, and the PE ships weaponry. Leela humming, that was adorable. All scenes in the monastary. The monks, especially their leader. "I’ve never meet a holy man I couldn’t club."

Leelas reaction to the monks being pacifists, "Get in the laundry room or I'll kick your butt!! This is the worst crazy sect I have ever been in." (Nice to see Leela back in her take-no-crap, butt-kicking mode  )

Benders talks with "God". The line "God" mentions a couple of times (eludes me right now).

Okay, wrapping up. Great episode. Top-3 with Roswell and Homeplanet of the season so far. I'll give it 9/10.

I'm surprised no one has tried to compare it to that Simpsons Halloween episode "Genesis Tub" when Lisa accidently creates a tiny civilization in a bowl. Very similar to me...I think they both were a parody on that same Twilight Zone episode when the astronaut finds a tiny city and rules over them as God. I like the Bender God better than the Lisa God though.  :)

Anyway the line that really cracked me us when when the monks walked into the closet and the last one mumbles "This is the worst crazy sect I've ever been in"

Another thing a thought about is that the sad guitar music played when Bender got lost is the same as in Anthology Of Interest I, when giant Bender dies.

Have that tune been in any other episode?

I keep seeing people say how nice it was to see the gupsy fortune teller again. What episode has it been in? The Honking? (the only episode I haven't seen yet)

I like how they used a laundry room to lock people up, like in "Brannigan Begin Again".

Nice, I gotta see this episode sometime. All I could think of when I saw the Gypsy fortune teller, was "Big" with Tom Hanks.  :laff:

I really liked the ep, right up until the end.  I thought "God's" line was a let-down.  I was hoping for something a bit more funny.  Oh well, still one of the better eppisodes lately.

How very disappointing. I finally got my brother to watch an episode and it sucks. Really, I laughed once and it wasn't a good one. It was more of a sigh...an angry one.

I liked the ep. It wasn't laugh out loud funny, but it was humbling. Bender learned how tough it is to be Almighty and "God's" line made sense. I think I like Bender's: "You can't count on God for jack. He pretty much told me so himself." much better though.

It was mach better than Pharoh. I also like this line.

"He speaks out of love for his friend. Perhaps that love is God."

"Oh great, a theory about God that doesn't require looking through a giant telescope. Get back to work!"

I give it an A -

I don't watch Futurama for laughing out loud jokes, although I did during this episode -- "Too late I realize that me children are me only real treasures." by space pirate; Bender: "I was once god" space god: "Yes I saw.  You were doing well until everyone died."  Fry: "You're right.  I know he was evil.  And on more than one occasion he actually stole my blood."  Very few episodes have a joke that gets more than a smirk out of me.  And I am sorry, but a "Bender licks butt" joke is not funny.

I will never watch a new episode with someone else who doesn't already like the series.  It tends to lower my enjoyment level, especially if they become hostile to the episode/show ("why this isn't as funny as *insert their favorite simpsons episode here*")

Shrimpkin: "All hail the metal Lord!"
Other Shrimpkins: "So hailed!"

I wrote earlier that Godfellas was a "sort-of" sequel to A Pharoah To Remember. but upon viewing again, I have to say it's more of a remake. Both start off with Bender facing permanent separation from his world and everyone he knows and exploits for his own gain; both involve him becoming the god-king of another society of morons; it all goes bad in the end both times as said society perishes (how many people do you think survived the collapse of Bender's gargantuan statue in Pharoah?) around or under their god.

And yet the episodes are so different. People hate one, love the other; some people love both, some hate both. I say kill 'em all, let Bender sort it out.

Questions:
1) Were the Shrimpkins ever really there? Bender took the asteroid-equivalent of a bullet to the head right before he saw people living on him. (Think about the last line of the script again while you consider this.)
2) Does Bender have a "healing factor?" Said asteroid plunks a big hole in his cranial unit, a minute later it's gone.
3) In the future, will all pianos be solid?
------------
Amy: "Oh no, Bender! Someone you know must have died!"
Bender: "I hope it was one of my enemies. Those guys suck!!"

3)Uh... yes.

Also, isn't the series about Fry?
If you watched it this season you would think Fry is the supporting character! Theres been nothing about him. All Bender and a Leela. Although, if you look ahead at the titles to come, you can see that quite a few Fry-ones are coming, like Jurassic Bark, The Why of Fry, etc. but i think that will be season 5.

Sure, but the Fry-in-the-Background effect has been a result of crappy, spotty program scheduling rather than intent. Fry is our anchor--the schlub-as-Buck-Rogers lost in a world that still occasionally freaks him out even now--but it can't be all-Fry all-the-time...remember the "Lisacentric" seasons of The Simpsons? Futurama would have had a long way to go before it got that bad...

Why do you watch the show, then? Futurama is a comedy. Sure, most of the time it has interesting stories, some good emotional moments and cool characters and such. That's what elevates it above most other comedies. But still, it's a comedy. I watch the show to laugh.

As good as the show is, if it were viewed as a legitimate drama or a legitimate scifi show, it would be absolutely terrible. The stories work because of the good jokes(and vice versa).
