I can only speak for myself, but the main reason why I'm into this scanning business I because I enjoy making scans. I also find it quite relaxing. And as John C said, scans are generally of a much higher quality than framegrabs which is especially nice if you want to use it for a wallpaper.

I may be wrong here, but I think there is also a legal angle. Displaying a screengrab is potentially Copyright infringement; while a scan is a ‘parody’ you have created yourself (albeit by tracing).

What I feel is odd is that people call it scan art. I believe that art requires abit more creativity than just tracing and recolouring. Some people do try to do interesting things with their scans but many do not.
But what the hey, if you enjoy it. Then who would care for the ramblings of crazed monkey? thats what i mean! it just seems a bit strange to make an almost identical duplicate of an image that exists. I want to stress that i'm not attacking all you scan artists( some of the stuff i've seen is good, like as good as the original stuff... but then why bother, never mind...) But would you not find it more rewarding to make drawings and sketches of the charatchers? paintings, sculptures! or maybe photograpy, yes! you could dress up as the characters and take pictures of yourselfs! or, then theres performance art, you could gently pulse the lights in a room, claiming that its the light from the thrust of the planet express ship... you see, art... its not just tracing. *The opions expressed within that post reflect the opinions of nagrub at the time of writing, and not those of Nagrub.inc
thankyou for your time.*

Then what about those who couldn't draw a straight line to save their lives? Much less anything resembling a Futurama character? Yes, I'm talking about myself here. Besides it's not like any of the scan artists people have ever claimed their pictures are entirely original creations, or art or whatever. Making original drawings/sketches more rewarding? Absolutely yes. Making original drawings/sketches actually feasible? Dear God, no. As already mentioned scans are of a higher quality than framegrabs: smoother lines, no artifacting, none of that grainy look most colors have in framegrabs, etc. Another advantage is the ability to resize them as needed, still with no loss of quality. Handy for avatars, wallpapers or even if you want a 2m*1m poster of Leela in her opera dress.

LaPointe: The Fry Hole has a good scan tutorial, under, uh... tutorials. Edit: Well, never mind. All in all, I'd say scans basically make it easier to have avatars, wallpapers, images for websites, or even a picture of one character from a certain scene. Sounds nice to me.

My scans are totally made on Gimp (program in linux) and it's very similar to Photoshop, in my art thread I posted my latest scan for those who want to check it. I liek doing scans, I've never said they need a lot of talent. The thing is that you can play with colours and stuff when the outlines are already done. and it's fun!!

I used to do a bit of scanning, maybe I'll do some more if I feel like it again. It's just something to do, and I've never see any "scan artist" claim that their work is original. To me, "scan art" is just a lablel, and I don't care what the label for what I do happens to be. Call it art, call it masturbation - it's all the same to me. "A rose by any other name," and all that. What's my point? It's just a hobby. If you happen to enjoy looking at people's scans, go ahead. If you don't go for that sort of thing, nobody's asking you to.

art now is anything that you sell that has a picture on it. To me, those crappy paintings that do not look like anything are defintly not art, and I'm sure that a lot of people agree.
