In the episode Roswell that ends well when they are walking down the street they walk past an old 40's T.V . People are gathered around watching something on it but the image is far to small to make out without looking into it further.

Anybody know whats on the T.V.

I'm pretty sure it was the same clip they used in the theme sequence, but I could be wrong.

Don't they mention on the commentary?

It could be the same clip, just running a few seconds longer than in the intro sequence. Pretty difficult to be absolutely sure though.

As for those lazy, no-good commentators...

Cohen: "What was on that little screen? Does anybody remember? "
J Stewart Burns: "Let's rewind ... Oh, we can't do that."
Groening: "You at home; rewind and tell us."
Burns: "You can email us at...."

I just saw this episode tonight, and I think I know the answer. I think they're watching a Simpsons cartoon called "Steamboat Itchy", from the Simpsons episode where Bart meets a bum that was the original artist who created Itchy & Scratchy (the cartoon is Matt Groening's homage to Walt Disney's cartoons; I can't remember the Simpson's episode name)...

The episode where Bart meets the bum is "The Day The Violence Died" (Season 7). HOWEVER:

"Steamboat Itchy" was originally shown in "Itchy and Scratchy: The Movie" (Season 4) in it's entireity; in "The Day The Violence Died" we only see the end of it. The only full 'cartoon' we see in TDTVD is "Manhattan Madness", which features Scratchy in his own.

Sorry, go back to your original discussion :P

True. However, since both cartoons are Matt Groening animations, it really doesn't matter when they occured or which episode. It could very well be "Manhatten Madness" or "Steamboat Itchy"; the point being that Matt Groening did "cross pollinate" each series with images from the other. I think it's a Simpsons related cartoon; hopefully, we'll hear from someone who truly knows what it is.

I emailed him yonks ago on that address and got a reply. However, it's perfectly likely that he's changed his email address in the 4 years (ish) since that commentary was recorded

Having just clipped out this section from Roswell that ends well and watching it closely I watched both "Manhattan Madness" and "Steamboat Itchy" and saw no meaningful resemblance in either cartoon. I then watched Steamboat Willy and again found no scene to look anything like the clip in question.

I tried Google videos for early cartoons then 1948 cartoons and I am starting to realize that short of just getting really lucky, or someone actually asking someone from the show, there is no way to 'find' the clip.

Really all we know about the clip is:
From 1948, or earlier. But even then, there are plenty of movies set in the past that show TV clips that would not yet have been out.

It might not actually exist at all. It might just be a little animation done for that TV for Futurama. It could be a parody of a live action bit, so again not exist in animated form
