If the guy at the orphanage had Leela's full name, why didn't they track down her parents?

That's a good point, but they said that Leela was an alien, not a mutant, and that there weren't any other one eyed alien on this planet. Either that or they just couldn't be bothered

Well if she was left at an orphanarium most would assume her parents, if they aren't dead, wouldn't really want her back.

You can see by the name tag that they DID know her full name!

The way that girl07 wrote it suggests that "they didn't track down her parents so they mustn't have had her name".

1. Many such oddities about Leela's heritage can always be answered by realizing that mutants are "not on the radar" in society. They do not appear to be in government or public records of any sort. Otherwise, many things that we've seen or heard in the show wouldn't happen that way.2. There is no mention of Leela being a human earthling so why would one assume it is a human earthling name? Where would you begin the search and how far would you go or spend to find out? 3. No way to know if the nametag was placed on Leela by the parents, temporary custodian, or some other 3rd party that just dropped off the basket. So the nametag wouldn't help in tracking her parents down because there is nothing to track. It might as well say Jane Doe. [This message has been edited by futz (edited 03-17-2007).]

Most likely because the top of the name tag says "HELLO!" on it.

So? Earth has lots of aliens. Many coming and going all the time. Any one or thing could just pick up some tags at the store.

Yes, but your first reaction to seeing a name tag written in English would be something along the lines of "holy crap! they're human!"

Not necessarily. you could just think that her parents, before abandoning her, went to a shop and bought a name tag so people would know her name. You can buy something written in another language. It doesn't make people think you're from that place, it makes you think they've been to that place and bought something.

Perhaps the owner of the Orphanarium was simply too lazy to look for her parents, or just didn't care. That, and they probably thought it to be from some other planet, and since she was the only one with one ey he'd seen, he probably figured the planet to be destroyed.

Ok, you make a valid point about how you can buy things in other languages, but explain how the aliens knew that "Hello!" is the right greeting to use in English? (Bare in mind it appears we're assuming these aliens ARE NOT English speaking)

The 5 basic rules of Star Trek:1) All aliens speak English 2) Aliens are always humanoid looking creatures. 3) All planets have breathable air 4)All planets have roughly the same gravity as Earth 5)The only aliens that dont speak English are Klingons but even Klingon language is based on the same principles as English.

I'm not german speaking - i still know Guten Tag is hello. I'm not French speaking - I still know Bonjour is Hello. I'm not italian speaking - I still know ciao is hello. I'm not spanish speaking. i still know hola is hello... Leela's parents could've not been english speaking but they'd still know 'Hello' means (hello in alienese).

I'm too lazy to search the thread, so I don't know if this has been posted, but in The Farnsworth Parabox, after the blue Zoidberg knocks down all the boxes containing the universes, why didn't the group just look for the box that wasn't marked? They had labeled all the other boxes with "Universe #whatever". The universe they were looking for would have had no mark.

But that's still a pretty lousy excuse, ok, I now making aliens speak English in television shows is done for pure convenience, but I've been taking this whole thing LITERALLY, and the literal meaning is that it's impossible for aliens to know english...unless they spy on us.

If the aliens are within about 100 light years they can recieve our early radio broadcasts, at about 60 light years they would be getting early TV broadcasts. If they know/remember that technology and don't live under water, etc. If SETI were to pick up such signals linguists would be hot on the heels of mathematicians. EM broadcasts may have more to do with Roswell happening when it did than A-bombs. Which might be a clue to where they are from.I wondered about the parabox thing too but I think one of the numbered open paraboxes fell on the parabox containing our universe effectively swallowing it.

Weird. I didn't read the post before the pic and it took me ages to realise bender's mouth was not half there. Where do you get these? Or do you just watch every frame grab indivdually?

hehe, fortunately enough, I was watching Love's Labour's Lost in Space earlier, and noticed Bender's mouth. When I looked at the grab, I noticed his door handle was missing too.

maybe it's because we're seeing his face in semi-profile, so that the other part of his mouth is on the other side of his head?

I always thought of Bender's teeth more like a LCD panel than individual parts that would have to bend weirdly.
