I don't know about you, but the title would have told me Fry was going to switch hands with the devil. Given that it is a spinning wheel, it is coincidental that the wheel landed on the Robot Devil. The thing I found funny is Fry knew most of the robots on that wheel. This makes sense, his best friend IS a robot. The end squence is ironic in literary terms and actual used neaning in that no one outside the devil was expecting it. (Whether the audience knew it or not is another story.)

Ok sorry I forgot to say that irony has more than one meaning, and the show was trying to say that there was just one meaning. Plus I didn't know what the title of the episode was, I just happened to catch the show on TV and if you'll pay attention to that one scene the devil was obviously making it seem like Bender was the one who Fry was going to switch his hands with.

Yeh, I can see what you're saying...The A. Morissette lyric is: "It's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife." That's not ironic, it's just unfortunate. Kind of like when Bender made Leela deaf because of the horn; Bender: "That's not ironic, it's just mean!" But, when you say "connected" to that...You mean that the whole comedians thing pointing out Alannis' song as being used incorrectly; you mean there was now a public awareness/problem involving the misuse of irony which the writers of Futurama were (still) addressing? Which, as you can tell by this board, is apparently still a problem. **I suppose at this point, irony would be mArc, the Administrator, to post a message saying that HE's actually sk8ghost.

Listen Barbra, first, no I am always right, wether you understand that or not is your problem, you although a completely bastardized speller, I have no problem with, keep it that way. And a spelling Nazi is something you are DEEPLY in need of by the way.
Edel, I don't give a flying one how new someone is as long as they're valid in opinion, this bloke is not, I couldn't tell you why but I have a REALLY BIG PROBLEM with people who fuck around with the definition of irony, dunno why, just have and frankly if I didn't change for my year 11 English teacher I'm not bloody likely to change for you. I am not a nice guy, but I'm a smart guy.

Am I the only one that noticed that the Morissette song "Ironic" having references to things that are NOT ironic is, in and of itself, ironic?

EDIT: and maybe it's ironic that 'We are free to disagree with the world's fattest man.' when we can't.......

"When a character says one thing but means another." "The use of words expressing something other then their literal intention."
Wow, that says almost the same exact thing as me, only worded different/more extensively.

I don't even try to define Irony, it's one of those little things in life that just screws with your head. The only solid example I know is being run over by an ambulance. Edit: after reading langlys post I just noticed the dates - I figured I hadn't seen most of these people before Sorry!
