Hello all,
I just finished watching 'The Cryonic Woman' and something doesn't seem right.
1) In the Prior ep, 'The Honking' when Bender is attacked by the were-car, he makes much about the car being wheeled, not a hover-car, as if wheels are an obsolete technology.
2) In 'Mother's Day' when the robots revolt, including virtually all automated devices from ATM's, TV's, and suicide boths, to Leela's "wrist-thingy", even Farnsworth has never heard of 'the wheel'; also, as if it were an obsolete and obscure technology.
3) Yet, in 'The Cryonic Woman' people in L.A. (a group with which I am sadly familiar!) drive wheeled vehicles. True they are carrying on high-speed mobile fire-fights with fully-automatic gunfire in these vehicles, but the vehicles are nonetheless wheeled.

Is this a stuff up, simply the difference between NNY and L.A. of the 31st century, or is there a bona fide explaination I (with my limited knowledge of Futurama) just don't understand?

Also, If this has been addressed in prior threads, I apologize for broaching it again here. I did do a search for it but found nothing.
As always I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

     Thanks.

PS. I do hope I put this in the right forum...

Yeah, I actually noticed that, too!  I thought that there weren't wheely cars in the future!  :P  But then again they *were* talking about L.A. being scummy and stuff... =n___n=  "That's L.A. for ya!"

Er, wasn't there a topic about this before?

Anyway, Bender doesn't seem very aware of things outside of himself.

"You lived before you met me?"

"Sure, lots of people did."

Wheels are only old and crappy enough to appear in LA anyway.

Eh it's just a joke that wasn't followed completely.  Besides when you first see that ep you REALLY think Fry goes to the year 4000 and with the wheels it seems more like a junkyard like thing, like Mad Max....

^ Exactly. It's like L.A. is completely primitive compared to NNY. They may still use wheels out there in the outlaw lands. As for the Professor not knowning about wheels...well, he doesn't remember much.

The only other thing is that in The Lesser Of Two Evils, many epsiodes before Mother's Day or The Honking, there a plenty of wheeled cars in Past-O-Rama, and if I wanted to be really picky, I would say that Leela and Bender's lack of knowledge of wheels is wrong, since they drove around in a wheeled car in TLOTE. But then, I would be very picky.  ;)

But in TLOTE the word "wheel" was never used describing discs of vulcanized rubber. That's why Bender didn't know the right word touse when he described the Werecar, and the gang didn't know what Fry was babbling about in "Mothers Day". But once Fry built the wheels, Leela recognized the concept from TLOTE and said she remembered them as round, not oval. When Fry objected like an idiot, she kept quiet, because she knew who was going to pull the thing.  ;)

But didn't that moon-tractor have wheels?  And Bender was on a wheeled moon-rover - when they were escaping the moon farm.

Taken from the audio commentaries to some episode:

Some writer: "Everything in the future hovers."
David X Cohen: "We had this idea that the technology of the wheel was lost somehow, and that's why they use hovercars. But sure enough, after this episode was made someone came up with a long list of things from earlier episodes with wheels."
The same writer: "Really? From the studio or on the Internet?" (Implied that if it was on the Internet it was just nerdtalk   ;))
David X Cohen: "Both, actually."

I rember that.
I think it was from the audio commentary to "A big peice of garbage" when they were talking about how stupid it was that it was the year 3000 and the professor was presenting his sell-o-scope on a old projector.

Yeah, it's weird how much info on their own show they got off the net... The reason the tray dissapears... Zoidberg ate it! One stupid animation error mystery solved, less than most shows probably have to go. On a somewhat related note, the pi-kea cabinet robot has wheels. CRAPPY PI-KEA WHEELS! Haha. Ha. I'm gonna go eat a bucket of icecream.

Furthermore, I cannot BELIEVE there is no Pi symbol in 99.9 percent of fonts. That irks me. Irk.

If they say they found out people on the net noticed it then that must mean that they read Futurama sites...I wounder if they read PEEL?

...Or maybe some nerd just emailed Matt to tell him everything wrong

They probably saw it on Futurama Chronicles. That website had lists of all sort of cool stuff and crap.

I don't think Matt would bother to read messageboards, if not for any other reason, then to avoid reading fanfics.

They did once talk of Leela fan-art (I think) on one of the early DVD commentaries.

Ah, yes. I think the good John DiMaggio know about TLZ, or some other site featuring cyclopian goodness.

Fry and Leela meet for the first time in SP3K)
Rich (Moore): "I think this is the first time we see Leela?"
Matt: "Yes!"
David: "Now, Matt, you had ... another thing Matt had early on was this idea that he wanted this one-eyed, beautiful character. Where did that come from?"
Matt: "Ehhh, no, I just thought it would be really cool to have this sexy baby, you know science-fiction style heroine, but give her one eye and see if we could still make her comly and attractive."
John: "Which she is, 'cause I've seen her on the Internet."
(lots of dirty laughter)
