OK, I was watching Route of all evil with commentary and in some parts of the episode the commentary is about eleven seconds late. Examples: Bender burps. About 11 secs later, soemone says 'John really does those." Another eg is when the phones start ringing. 11 secs later, Matt says: "Where'd those come from?" Ther's more but I can't be bothered remembering or typing them. Anyway, is it my disk, all the Aussie disks or every disk in the world that has this problem? Just wondering.

I don't remember noticing a problem with that commentary, but it was a while ago that I watched it.

I think it's that the commentators just react late.... maybe cause they're fooling off so much, I've noticed a few late responses like that before, kinda (note: I don't have those DVDs yet, I be American...)...

It doesn't sound like they're just reacting late though. Plus each late response is pretty much the same amount of seconds late.

The "Route Of All Evil" commentary is out of synch, it gets more and more pronounced as the episode progress. At the end it's something like 15 or 20 seconds out of synch. Most notably when the Little Prince get hit by a newspaper, 17 seconds later Dan Webber say "take that, beloved childhood icon!"

The "Where No Fan Hs Gone Before" commentary is a couple of seconds out of synch in the end as well. That's the only one that spring to mind.

There's quite a few commentaries that are out of sync. For anyone who doesn't want their enjoyment of these commentaries ruined (in case you never noticed these before), look away now:

OK, good. It's not just my DVD. I didn't even notice the commentary being early/late in those other episodes in season 2 and 3 that Mouse on Venus provided. And I didn't intend for the title of the thread to be funny.

The only one that I have noticed (out of region one-tastic seasons 1 and 2) has been
and it constantly annoys me. Constantly, I say.

The reason I noticed some of those other ones was that you'd hear them laughing before the punchline of the joke or announcing something before it came on screen (e.g. "Ah, the Smelloscope!" ) and I just thought "No way could they be that on the ball!" so I listened carefully to the commentaries and spotted a pattern of things being said a second ahead or so.

There have been a couple, such as "Hell Is Other Robots" that I thought were out of sync for a while but they're actually not.

The only one that's really annoyed me is "How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back" because of the actual *show* dialogue being out in the third act, as Mouse of Venus pointed out. Thankfully that's not the case when watching the actual episode :P

yes, i noticed the lag on TROAE, aswell. towards the end its really bad. could it have anything to do with PAL/NTSC? there is a 4% difference between the two. maybe the commentary is actually synced to the NTSC version and not the PAL, as it should be. is it the same on the R1 set, does anyone know?

No.

Because zapperdan, it isn't a gradual lag. For the first act of TROAE, the commentary is in sync, then early in the first act, after Maurice LaMarche says "Insert beer commercial here", there is an 11 second pause before Dan Vebber makes a comment about the newspaper scene 10 seconds ago and thus, for the rest of the ep, the commentary is 10-11 seconds behind.

So basically, it was just a case of bad editing.  :hmpf:

That could be true, but I think it's simply the fact that they goof around alot and simply respond late. And hey, we still know what they're talking about, and therefore the commentaries are still viewable.

Well, you're wrong. Check out the commentary: notice The Little Prince getting wanged by the newspaper gun, and everyone goes "OOH!" 11 seconds later. "Take that, beloved childhood icon!" Trust me, everything goes 10 seconds or more behind in said commentary, it's definitely an editing error.

I was actually surprised that the episode wasn't out of sync like you R2ers said. If we had gotten the out of sync version in R1, would it have been that bad though? I mean, was it really distracting?

It is kinda annoying. You have to really pay attention in order to understand what they're talking about at times, such as when Brian Sheesley's talking about the smoke trail that comes from the ship. Without the synced-up commentary, it's hard to understand what he's talking about the first few times.

The worst is 'A taste of freedom' because sometimes the commentary is early and sometimes it's late. Also, 'Where no fan has gone before' is kinda annoying especially at the last few minutes when no-one says anything until the credits.

I wonder actually if some of these extended gaps are to do with stuff being edited out for being slanderous or offensive or whatnot, because it just seems odd that they would sometimes go a whole 2 minutes without saying anything. I mean, check out the "Obsoletely Fabulous" commentary when Matt says "So Dan, do you remember any of the stuff that was cut from the robot convention?" and then absolutely no-one says anything for about 20 seconds. Either they were all indulging in a spot of rudeness or there was stuff being said that couldn't be kept in, but it just seems too unnatural for a pause like that to occur.  :hmpf:

I think sometimes in commentaries people bring in Water Or Coffee, so maybe there Silent as they all pick and choose that.
If its just simple Swearing then they can beep it out, I've heard it done.

Actually, according to Teral, there can be as much as a 15-20 second delay. I'd much rather wait a few extra months and have my DVDs delay-free.

Well, the Region 1 set has new original voice clips.

  • The first disc has Fry and Bender insulting you at the main menu screen and Bender introducing each episode.
  • Lord Nibbler does the same on the second disc.
  • Zapp & Kif take over for the third (Kif: Sir, there seems to be an unexplained delay. Zapp: Really? How do explain that? Kif (groan): I don't, sir. Zapp: With that attitude, you'll NEVER make Lieutenant. Kif: I AM a Lieutenant.)
  • Haven't gotten to Disc 4 yet, but I'm assuming it's Zoidberg.

I actually just watched this particular episode with and without commentary today on my Season 3 DVD set, and the commentary's totally in-sync.  I haven't noticed any of them from any seasons being out.

I have had this experience with one DVD some time ago, and I've been racking my brain to try and remember what it was to no avail.  I do know, however, that it drove me NUTS, so I feel your pain!

With Futurama, they tend to leave in stuff like that. Things such as when a person walks in halfway through a commentary, when they're eating during commentaries or even when someone's mobile phone goes off during a commentary - they've left it in here.

Also, I doubt they'd swear in the commentaries - John Dimaggio was told to "only use words we can use in the show" when he said "asshole" on the Futurestock commentary, so obviously nobody else would try anything worse after hearing that.

John also said "shit" during the 30% Iron Chef commentary, and that was left in unbeeped - so I doubt it's anything like that. Probably just careless encoding errors.
