It's probably too early yet, but if anyone out there see's any reviews (or even "mentions" of it) for the Region 1 release of Season 1, could you post the link (or the source if it's print) here?

sorry, I have yet to see a review of the region 1 DVD's. You may just want to read the reviews for the region 2, though, as I'm pretty sure they're going to be pretty much the same, the DVD's that is.

Yeah ... as I said above, it's probably too early yet . I already own the Region 2 DVDs so I'm not so much interested in what's on the DVDs themselves as I am on how they "go over" (or how they're received by fans) in the states.

BTW, if you go to the FOX homepage (fox.com), they're actually ADVERTISING the Season One box set (at least at the moment)!

The only packaging difference I can see is the spines of the disc cases aren't as grooby as the R2 ones.

Region 1's packaging is going to have the same art, but the outer part, I believe, is going to be cardboard with a hole cut out so you can see the inner piece and the individual plastic cases inside are going to be super thin (as seen in the pictures in the link above) and see-thru (unlike most R1 cases, but like R2 DVDs are).

EDIT: Okay, I just checked the link above so I guess I'm just stating the obvious.

The outer sleeve is going to be cardboard (like the simpsons DVDs perhaps)?  I hope so.  The plastic sleeve on the UK release is flimsy and easily damaged.  It will be nice if they changed it to something more sturdy.

I actually prefer my Futurama DVD case to my Simpsons one - its nice and sturdy (cardboard wears easily) and you get actual DVD cases rather than some cheapo fold out arrangement. Just my opinion.

IGN DVD have reviewed the set, giving it a very respectable 9 out of 10.

Another glowing review for the season 1set

Only glitch is, that the reviewer think Kif Kroker is one of the show artists, but otherwise a solid "go-buy-this-set" grade.

This one is a bit of a cheat:

 http://www.dvdtoons.com/reviews/174

It seems to really be an old review of the R2 release as the reviewer mentions living in Europe and looks forward to the second and third seasons, but the review is dated 3-15-03 and mentions the R1 release date.

8 out of 10, and overall a very positive review.

Too bad he left out the script and story-board of SP3K in his run-through of the extras. Otherwise a good review.

This week's (April 4, 2003 -- with Oscar news on cover) Entertainment Weekly has a small, yet very favorable (it's the "Editor's Choice" no less) blurb about the season 1 DVDs in their Video & DVD section (page 84). The reviewer gives the set an "A".

In the latest issue (April 2003 with a Smallville cover) of Cinescape (page 71) there's a review of the DVDs where the reviewer gives it not so favorable (what do they know?) 3 out of 5 stars. On Cinescape's website, there's a news blurb (not really a review) about it at the following link ...

Last time I checked, S1 R1 DVDs are in the top ten on Amazon.com!  Pretty amazing if you ask me.  I'm enjoying it.

A very nice spot for the DVD's, thanks to the Onion, which sticks up for the show. http://www.theonionavclub.com/reviews.php?review_type_id=1&issue_id=53#review2

Here's the text:
Futurama premiered in 1999 to hype and anticipation that seemed fitting for the first new series created by Matt Groening since The Simpsons. But even before the show reached the air, Groening was describing his Futurama-related dealings with the Fox network as the worst experience of his adult life. What happened next couldn't have made him feel much better. While Futurama struggled to connect to its audience, Fox first moved it to a new time slot, then constantly preempted it for sports broadcasts, a pattern that continues today. Officially, Futurama is still on the air and in its fifth season, but production halted on the series last year, and the current season is composed of un-aired leftovers. Still, its 72-episode run nearly matches that of the original Star Trek, and it's been more than enough to develop a cult following for the show. Besides, with the growing availability of DVD box sets, why watch TV shows on TV anymore? Preserving the series in a form forever protected from preemption, the first DVD installment of Futurama features the first 13 episodes, originally shown as the first season and part of the second. Where The Simpsons has evolved in appearance and approach over the years, Futurama uses immediately impressive animation to place characters bearing Groening's signature look in a universe that seems to have been thought through to the last pixel. Anchoring the show is the character of Philip J. Fry (voiced by Billy West), a 20th-century pizza-deliveryboy accidentally preserved into the 31st century, where any resemblance to the present day is purely intentional. The world sits gripped by the developments on All My Circuits, a popular robot soap opera with a token human cast member. A corporation holds trademarks for the words "mom" and "love." Vehicles hover, but mostly because the formula for making the wheel has been lost. Futurama has been criticized for replacing the affection at the center of The Simpsons with an endless succession of gags and science-fiction in-jokes, but the series doesn't support the critique: It generates warmth for a supporting cast that includes a cyclopean alien, a hapless squid-like doctor, and a robot just on the acceptable side of malevolent. Not that there's a shortage of material aimed squarely at the geek contingent. On the commentary track for one episode, co-developer and theoretical-computer-science-degree-holder David Cohen reveals a background figure to be a parody of a type of diagram used in particle physics. He then goes on to explain that the diagram translates into a joke about dog feces. In other words, Futurama contains something for everyone–except, it seems, grumpy Fox executives. —Keith Phipps

UGO gave the DVDs a really good review.  They say Futurama is "downright brilliant" and "one of the funniest animated shows ever."
