Your comic book store guy is wrong.

Oh, and this is about Merchandise, ain't it?

Online sales sites usually offer stuff for pre-order--it's beneficial to them to do so--so a peek at Amazon.com would let you know what's coming (and what's not)...

There has been much discussion around here about the video-release-versus-syndication conflict; I forget the exact details but it seems that in the US, most programs will not be released to tape for five years if it would interfere with syndication.

(If this is true, it's not a hard-and-fast rule: South Park, for example, or The PowerPuff Girls, have gone to video even while still "hot." Hell, the guys who make South Park actually encourage online downloading! and Best Brains (MST3K) encourages tape-trading even while they market the legit stuff. But FOX, of course, doesn't think that way.)

BrainSluggo's got it. Looking at two Fox properties- The Simpsons is going on 14 seasons, and they just released the first season on DVD recently. Same with the X-Files, it's been on 9 years and the first season box came out 2 years ago. So I have my doubts about Futurama coming out "soon."

The amazon site listing it has nothing to do with it ever coming out. They just list everything they see people search for and hope that these sign up for the "info mail" then. This lets them sell the stuff if it comes out without paying the affiliates like PEEL/CGEF/me even if they sent them there first.

Regarding your comic book guy: They tend to lie. Not out of evilness but calculating. They hope you to return and ask "is it there now?" and then they will tell you some story about postponing and stuff and hope that you buy something "while there".

I didn't mean to suggest that Amazon influences the release of a show, [-mArc-], but rather that it might be used as an indicator of whether or not the show is going to be released soon. And even then, I wouldn't trust it unless it had a picture of the cover...

Heh heh, my comic-book guy actually chases customers away! Kids coming in and asking about Pokemon cards set him completely off. I don't know how he stays in business.

But that is wrong, they simply add it when enough people search for it.

Of course "soon" is a relative term.  The final episode of Star Wars will be released "soon" if you consider the length of time that passed between Episode 6 and Episode 1. (And just in case you couldn't care less about Star Wars, no - that was not a typo.)

The hold up in the U.S. is that here a program will make many, many times the amount of money in syndication than it ever makes during its normal run.  If would be financially stupid for Matt to rush out the DVDs here because no station is going to pay several hundred thousand dollars (or more depending on market size) to get rights to air a program that anyone with $4.00 can rent at Blockbuster.

The DVDs will be released in the U.S. when either a) the show has been in syndication for the length of time the contracts state it will be prior to release on video, or b) Matt can't make a syndication deal because no one wants rights to a poorly rated show (even if it's not the show's fault) with less than 100 episodes available to syndicate.

If the latter, look for the DVDs to start coming out fall 2003 after the show is off of Fox.  If the former, tack at least a year or two onto that.

And before anyone starts rubbing a lamp wishing for option (b), if the show does well in syndication, it *could* open the door to the production of *new* episodes.

Me: When are we getting the DVDs?
FOX: Soon enough.
Me: That's not soon enough!

Damitol: good post, but a few corrections: Fox decides when and where to make the DVDs and who to sell syndication of the episodes to (as well as if they do well enough to keep it going), Matt Groening has no real control over it.

Region 2 is the only sure-fire way to go. You'll be waiting around forever if you go by what the comic book guy says. One rare instance where Region 2 gets things before us lucky Region 1-ites.

I can only assume the guy who posted above me was talking about stuff I saw on e-bay.

It amazes me how they let people sell illegal stuff on there.

maybe I'll just buy the pal version dvds and take it in some place and get it converted.

if I only had my own dvd burner  lol

These look legit.. Not burned stolen cdrs-- they even have fox australia  promo ads on them. Oddly enough these were released before the dvds, & the dvd set has the same covers as the vcds. I am not a wholesaler of vcds. All i have is one set of season one. It was made & released in Malaysia,  & has tax stamps on the back.

Yep, I have those- they are legal within Malaysia only. Of course, I consider my property to be Malaysian soil like an embassy you know.... he he. All 4 seasons on VCD are available on ebay. And you can even easily copy VCDs on any CD burner. Pretty nice for any friends that also happen to live in Malaysia with you.

Of course I live in Malaysia, doesnt everyone?
Yep, these are the one and same vcd's... very good quality for vcds.. I will not buy home burned vcds from ebay again. (I got burned once, really bad quality, skips & freezes & pixelation)
These are about as close as you can get in the US, without a region free player. I broke down & got a region free player from where ????
