I'm positive we've already got a thread about this, though a search gave me nothing that hadn't been closed or wasn't completely on the topic of the show...
Anyway, I've seen the first 3 episodes. It was pretty funny and had quite a few good quotes & moments (eg. "Am I gonna tell them about the downsizing? No... I mean, if you were a doctor, you wouldn't tell a patient if they had cancer!" ).
Keep in mind, however, that I have NOT seen the original British version, and so basically have no means of comparison to judge the shows on. Not that it matters NOW anyway, the American one's already been cancelled here...

It's alright. The previews for it had me expecting a lot more though. They base the show on those awkward pauses which may be why the show seems to move slower than others, in my opinion anyways. I like the lead actor, I think he does a great job with what he's given, but as for that "odd" and "random" comedy, I prefer Arrested Development.

I'm a big fan of the BBC version, but I actually enjoyed the US version. It took a little while before everyone hit their stride, but by the 6th episode they found their own niche IMO. And unless NBC flip-flopped their decision within the last few weeks, the show IS returning in the fall (same night, same time)...how long it will stay on the air is another question...

I've been watching it for a while. I love it. Great show. Steve Carell's performance is great. The humors good and the way I like it. I can't wait for the next episode.

1- It's "unfunny". 2- It hasn't been cancelled yet.

hmm..I have watched a single show, with great expectations because it has Steve Carell (one of the coolest guys ever), but unfortunately, this hope was crushed by the stupidity of the show.
I rest my case

Terrible. WHY do americans have to to remake a classic show that is already hilarious into their own version so they can hear their own accents and ruin the comedy? Everything is the same, the lines, the sets, everything... but the timing is off, the comedy is sparse and worst of all, it just plain sucks. I really feel awkward watching the US version. For those of you who haven't seen the BBC version, do yourselves a favour already! Steve Carell unfortunately got swepped up in that mess, but I know he can bounce back. He's played a TON of great roles before this, and will play more again. He was on RoveLive this week (australia) and is so weird and random, he has his own brand of comedy. Gave me a few laughs

I had to dig this thread up because I recently got the DVD of the astonishingly long, six-episode first season, which reaffirmed, in my mind, why this is the best comedy on TV. The acting is what really sells it. It's to the point where it almost seems entirely ad libbed. And while the episode commentaries reveal that the actors do contribute, it only works to compliment the written dialog. The character's aren't drawn in an overly-broad fashion. Michael Scott (Carell) and Dwight Schrute (Wilson) are probably the most outrageous personalities, but they aren't so bad that it violates the suspension of disbelief. The other main characters basically have the job of reacting to the exploits of Michael and Dwight. It should be mentioned that they do this with aplomb.
Anyway, I'll gush over the DVD in the appropriate thread, but it's still a great show despite the rather short opening season.

This is my favourite live-action comedy after Arrested Development. And I say that now, having seen the british version to compare it to. I fucking love this show - all the characters are brilliant and it never fails to make me laugh. "Close your eyes. Picture a convict. What’s he wearing? Nothing special, baseball cap on backward, baggy pants. He says something ordinary like 'Yo, that’s shizzle.' Okay, now slowly open your eyes again. Who were you picturing? A black man? Wrong, that was a white woman. Surprised? Well, shame on you." And to any british loyalists, I will say: Don't judge it until you've seen a few episodes. It does start off as a direct copy, then quickly begins to develop some key differences. By the end of Season 2, it's almost a completely different show. Also, I'm going to marry Pam some day.

"Do you wear boxers, briefs, or pantaloons?"
"Dwight: Who is the king of Austria? Ben Franklin: Joseph the Second. Dwight: Who is the king of Prussia? Ben Franklin: Friedrich Wilhelm the Third. Dwight: Who is the king of England?! Ben Franklin: Why, the tyrant King George, of course"
"I don't care what Jim says. That is not Ben Franklin. And I'm 99% sure."
That was pretty much my favorite episode this year. Benjamin Franklin only made it better.

Haven't seen the Ben Franklin episode, but a deleted scene from "The Return" showed that Andy was sent to anger management classes after the wall-punching incident, so I assume that's where he'd be.

Michael was waaaaaayyyyy too annoying in the new episode. I know they can push it with his character sometimes, but come on, enough is enough. It did have one absolute gem, though:
"I saw Wedding Crashers accidentally. I bought a ticket for Grizzly Man and went into the wrong theater. After an hour, I figured I was in the wrong theater, but I kept waiting. That’s the thing about bear attacks. They come when you least expect it."

The American office, In my opinion is the smartest wittiest and most down right funniest program on at the moment. It had a rocky beggining, mainly just copying the British version. But it really sprouted into its own show. I agree with Beamer about Michael in Phylis' Wedding. Although the 'I bet you can hear aswell' line made me lol. The Jim and Pam thing is stil great and isnt running out of steam yet. I was screaming at the screen . It pisses me off that its getting released on DVD in July in the UK. Luckily! I'm one step ahead, and have recently discovered my DVD players multi region! Take that UK DVD release setting people!
