Not that I care anymore....how long since a halloween episode even mattered, anyway?

Good point, although I did like the one story were Flanders has to kill Homer.  Seeing homer slap a gun and dareing him to shoot him was funny.

Yeah, that was a good segment.  And I don't hate the halloween episodes now or anything, I just think it's been a really long time since there's been a significantly good one.  Even if they have one really good segment (like the one you pointed out), the rest of it is usually a mediocre/passable blur.  It was the same last year too, with the manhunting sequence being so great, and the rest just being so forgettable.

Sorry to double post, but um....

Impressions of the new dvd set?  I won't be picking it up for a few days (a first) so I'm curious about how it is.

I bought the newest set of the simpsons dvds season 8. It was one of the better seasons before they got shity. I'm going to quit buying them after season 9. The extras so far are meh.

I'm either gonna get this tonight after work, or first thing tomorrow, and I'll probably also stop buying after season 9.  I'll still probably rent future seasons to listen to some of the commentaries

There's a lot of classic episodes, I which they would've had a few more special features, but the episodes definitely make it worth the money

I have it now too.  It seems to be about the same quality as always, which is a good thing, but I haven't gone through much of it yet.  One disapointing aspect is that apparently some of the deleted scenes are easter eggs now, which is something I can't condone when they're such a key feature.  But regardless the quality seems quite good, and of course the episodes are great.  This will probably be the last season I buy though.

Wow, The Seemingly Neverending Story won the emmy. Wasn't that episode, you know, not all that great?

No, I personally think it was the best of the season, and while I would have liked to have seen South Park win a little bit more, it was definitely a lot better than the other things nominated.

I believe there were a few negative comments on it posted in this thread, but overall, the fan response to it was pretty good, and it is generally regarded as one of the (if not the) best of Season 17.

Yeah, I think that episode has a pretty well-cemented status as the best of that season.  That's partially a testament to its own quality, and also partially a testament to how truly middle of the road practically every other episode of that season was.

I would've preferred South Park won personally, not because of that individual episode, but because the overall quality of that show is a lot higher than The Simpsons right now.  I also thought it was an absolute crime that The Boondocks wasn't even nominated.  The episode "The Return of the King," alone, was better than any of the actual nominees.  And it was hardly the only episode that was better either.

I don't mind easter eggs being used for deleted scenes, since they've never been a big reason for me to buy the sets.  I've become hooked on the illustrated commentaries though, which are a great look into the minds of animators, and are always hilarious.  This set's commentaries are probably the most subdued since season 4's, but that isn't entirely a bad thing since it makes the laugh out loud moments in them stand out more.

My fave ep of the Season is 'The Girl Who Slept Too Little', that stood out to me. Although I haven't actually seen the ep that won so who knows...

^That was my second favorite, and was generally regarded as the best by the fans until "Seemingly Neverending Story" aired.  I would say those two were the main standouts of the season.

On the "Homer's Enemy" commentary David Cohen mentions that the band Bloodhound gang did a song made entirely of ralph quotes.  I found a fan made video on youtube with the song.  It's a really good song.

Most really big boards get hacked every now and then.  It's happened before, and the problem is always fixed pretty quickly...

The episode was "meh". Like the vast majority of episodes from the past 5 seasons.

I am, however looking forward to the new episode on the 17th with the White Stripes...

It was of a "meh" quality. Sooner or later, most likely sooner, the "meh" episodes will probably be getting much worse.

My rankings for tonight's FOX Block:

1. The War At Home
2. Family Guy (loved the "All in the Family" reference)
3. American Dad
4. The Simpsons

I actually liked last night's episode. Though the ending was random and not very much a conclusion, it was decent enough for me. Many points in it I thought of how times past coulda used the material. Way better than last season's starter, by far. B+ to an A-. Somewhere in between.

I like how they used a random backround character and gave him a story. This actually was a better episode than others lately. I loved the Godfather references (Michael, among them). I give this episode a B. Good, but not great.

The Mook, The Chef, The Wife & Her Homer

Wow, this was actually a pretty damn good episode! Lots of laughs, decent writing throughout, and it's nice to see an episode focussing more on jokes for once - like I said, the biggest problem with Season 17 was its lack of humour.

Okay, so it wasn't without its problems - firstly, the concept of the first act was just totally repeating what happened at the start of Homerpalooza. The Metallica thing was gay (though thank fuck they were only in it for 30 seconds), I really don't think that Lunchlady Dorris should've been put in the episode, and I'm pretty sure a lot of jokes were lost on me since I haven't seen The Godfather. But, even then, the episode was really enjoyable as a whole. I'd actually say this is the strongest season premiere I've seen since Season 15.

B+

[Bitching starts here]

That episode was boring, lame,a waste of time and money. I hope Michael gets super cancer AIDS and dies. I never cared that much about the people in the episode. I think Hans Moleman was the best person in the whole show. He was the only thing funny.

I should stop watching the new episodes of the simpsons again. I think I forgot how bad they where. The last 3 newer episodes I saw where god awful.
