I realize it's not a new movie, but I just saw Dogville and thought it was great. Consider this a recommendation if you haven't seen it already.

Lost in Translation

Didn't catch this at the cinema, and only just rented it. I watched it with my parents and they both didn't think much of it. I loved it. I adored the subtlety to it the real-life wandery feel, the smooth beautiful and yet fun and insane feel of Japan. The uncertainty, anticipation and real human interaction made it great. But I can see how some people might hate it.

My father: what film is this?
Me: Lost in Translation?
Him: What's it about?
Me: er, the language barrier? I'm not too sure
Him: launguage burry?
Me: barrier.
Him: *inaudible muttering*?
Me: what? curry? I think we got lost in translation there ourselves

Malibu's Most Wanted
I watched this on HBO yesterday and it wasn't too bad. It had alot of funny jokes and those two actors that brought Brad to the Getto stole the show. My favorite parts where:

what is with everyone using the spoiler tag like that?? Since this is a review thread, you aren't spoiling anything by listing your favorite parts. People generally do that in reviews.

But then it spoils the movie for people who haven't seen it and don't want to hear about what happens before they see it!

please continue to use spoiler tags. a lot of movies don't get released at the same time in all countries and not everyone has seen every movie ever made. Movie critics don't give away the spoilers and we won't either (in this thread).

As I may have merntioned before, I almost never go to the movies; so here's a review of a movie I watched on DVD recently:

Scorched

This movie was kind of hard for me to follow, probably because I had been up for more than 24 hours when I watched it.  (Don't ask.)  Anyway, it's about three employees of a bank who all independently decide to rob the bank on the same day, but none of them know that the others are robbing the bank as well.  Alicia Silverstone's character wants to rob the bank to get back at her ex-boyfriend (who is also her boss at the bank) for dumping her.  Woody Harrelson plays an unlucky animal lover who wants to get revenge on the local millionaire (played by John Cleese) who killed his pet duck's mother.  Paulo Costanzo's character wants to rob the bank because...  okay, I'm not really sure.  I guess he just wants the money.

It's a funny movie.  There is a lot of great slapstick humor from both Harrelson and Cleese.  The best part of the movie though, is Rachel Leigh Cook.  Her character isn't really that central to the plot, but throughout the movie we get to see her daydreams, in which she imagines herself as a Dungeons & Dragons character, acting out revenge fantasies against people she doesn't like.

Overall, it may not be the best movie I've ever seen, but it's still a good movie worth watching if you like wacky comedies.  I plan to watch it again sometime when I've had more sleep, and can pay better attention.

Review 3.0!
Mommie Dearest
Let me start by saying: Joan Crawford was one f***ed up bitch!
The movie, while disturbing and strange, still is a classic in it's own right. And, Futuramam ripped it off in "Bender Shouldn't Be On T.V", making it all the sweater. A-

Scary Movie 3
It had a few hits and misses. It had some awesome parodies, but also had some sick jokes, too. Anthony Anderson stole the show.B-

James and the Giant Peach
A very touching movie with great clay-motion
effects. Also, it was produced by one of my favorite directors Tim Burton. B+

Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights
OK, I'll admit it suck when I first saw it, but know, after seeing it, I relised it is just like the other Adam Sandler movies. The only thing that differs is that it is animated. I guess when you animate that comedy, it looks horrible, but it is acctually OK, but some stuff is still preety sick and stupid. C+

Woodbot 2.0 you like to pick the films that are crap don’t you?

Anyway I Robot

I thought the movie was excellent and Will Smith was so sexy especially the nude shower scene   . All the robots were cool and I like Sonny. Brilliant film. Go and see it if you haven’t seen it.

I don't generally review films I don't like [unless it's such a bad film that a warning to others is in order].. Posting just to say something sucks seems like a waste of effort.
Also Will Smith's shower scene saddened me. [Napoleon]Gross..![/Napoleon]

Yeah but his movie choices are even worst.

The Stepford Wives

I just watched it and I thought it was ok but really I think the whole film is just sexist. I mean men can never get pleased by their wives so they made them so perfect and become the slaves to their husbands. Pfft

I really like Nicole Kidman and Mathew Broadrick in it. I think they were really good playing their part. Awww and that robot puppy is so cute.

Robo Puppy!

Juliet, the film is a 70's remake so of course it's a bit sexist.
Grandpa Simpson: As was the style at the time!

Hmmm, if Jon Lovitz is in it, it might be good...
*checks stuff*
And Christopher Walken!

Darkhorizons gave it an ok, maybe I'll see it.

Dodgeball
I don't call myself a movie buff so I don't know the official world position on this movie, but I saw it at a friends house yesterday and I loved it. The gags were great, most jokes were spot-on and it showed the mindless brutality of a game with soft squishy balls. Also it had girl scouts on steroids and a lot of people getting hit in the 'nads.

I love it because I think that Steve Cogan was adorably cute in that movie. Jackie Chan was also good in the movies too. I was suprise that Owen Wilson was in it.

:stabs Steve Coogan:
Uhm. So. Anyway.
I watched Mojave Moon because I heard Alfred was in it, and even though he doesn't do much but ogle Angelina Jolie and climb out of a car window, I still enjoyed this film. It's definitely not a classic, and it wouldn't win many awards. Still, it was an interesting film that transported me.. Sort of lulled me into a trance. It made me forget about the world for a few hours, because it portrayed an environment that was so far removed from anything I've experienced. Danny Aiello is somewhat generic, but.. Anne Archer is dreamy, quiet and intriguing to watch, and Michael Biehn makes his role into something really unbalanced and scary. If it's on TV, it's definitely worth a watch. And it was cool cause Angelina Jolie in this role somehow didn't annoy me to death like so many of her later roles did.

I watched Sleeper the other day and it was interesting to see how Futurama, Star Trek and other thigns seemed to have taken inspiration from it. A man had been cryogenically frozen and woke up 200 years later (sound familiar?) It was amusing seeing Woody Allen wrapped up in tin foil. No wires or support systems, just wrap him up like a potato and stick him in the freezer, must try that! it also had a robopuppy. Amusing in a retro-futuristic way but the directing was pretty terrible by today's standards.

Cloolsome movie. Great acting and dialogue, amazing shots of Tokyo and a lot of what one might call "screen chemistry". And a good soundtrack.
Oh, and lots of Scarlett Johannsen walking around in her underwear. Alllriiight!

This was an excellent movie, but there were a few little things bogging it down that stopped it from getting an a in my books. Normally I wouldn't care, but the one I will describe in spoiler bellow really bugged me.

Actually, it's a remake of a movie adapted from a book. The original movie was a horror sci-fi story--not meant to be a sexism thing at all. It was remade as a comedy, so bring on the feminist jokes!
Haven't seen it, but they did a lot of filming in my hometown or the towns around here. There's nothing more satisfying than knowing YOU'RE the ones targeted by all those Connecticut jokes.

Collaterall

I loved this film from frame one. It took a simplistic storyline and made it great. Tome Cruise was great as Vincent and Jamie Foxx was awesome as Max. They should both be nominated for Oscars next year. The digital camera work never bothered me one bit, unlike another movie(*Cough*Open Water*Cough*). The scenes between Vincent and Max(which is about 96% of the movie), were very good and really well acted.

Essentially I think it is. But here there were shots of the characters with hair over their face or falling over, it made it funnier. I guess being an artists, I pick up on things like that

I always wondered how directors could direct and have a starring role, must make it difficult

Alien Vs. Predator

"Hey, It didn't suck. Wow." That was my reaction when I walked out of the theater to one of the most anticipated face off of the summer. I heard a lot of bad press about this thing saying that it's crap. So I went in with little expectation. Things didn't start off well when no Aliens or Predators have shown up. Instead, we get what we call "Character Development". Yeah, it's nice and all but, where's the fighting? We see the Pred's first as they prepare to desent to earth. The expendible crew go to Antarctica to dig a hole when loe and behold, a hole is already there with, Oh look, half a house. Meaning some kind of beam from the sky made the hole. No one cares though. Later, the Pred's start killing off the cast. Later some face huggers in the pyramid show up and in 5 seconds(because there's a slow motion shot of them jumping), take out half the cast. Then out titular baddies face each other and the film goes from "Eh" to "Cool". Most of the cast gets wiped out quickly
The fights were gruesome as since they are fantasy characters, the camera is alowed the see them get killed. The CGI, although not perfect(when is it?), was effective enough. The ending bothered me a bit because,
and that's alame atemmpt to open for a sequel. Listen, just pick who wins, have a definite winner and then call the sequel AVP 2: Rematch. Oh, well. For what it's worth, the film left me surprised and kinda satisfied. Whoever has any intrest seeing the movie, go ahead. Otherwise, see Yu-Gi-Oh: The Movie. Don't worry I won't see that one.

until it comes to DVD

EvilLunch--no, there wasn't much doubt it would suck. But still...Aliens and Predators are both well designed scary alien creatures, and I think having them fight each other could make for some cool action sequences. Instead, we get a lot of quick-cutting, poorly lit action where we can't tell what's going on at all(the human deaths in particular were retarded. The action improved when it was just creatures fighting, but still).

I hated the sassy black environmentalist heroine, too. And the whole "outrunning a firey explosion" ending made me want to kill someone. Followed by the whole "outrunning the collapsing ground beneath them" ending. Followed by the "outrunning an alien queen, even though there's no way she could outrun that, I mean jesus it's an alien queen!" ending.

The only thing that could have saved this movie is a sex scene between the sassy black environmentalist chick and the predator. You could tell there was something going on, there. Awww yeah.

Underworld

I watched this on DVD, and it sucked.  How did it suck?  Let me count the ways.

First of all, whoever wrote this movie clearly got all of his ideas from Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse.  White Wolf should sue for copyright infringement.  Oh, wait, they did.

Second, why was the entire movie filmed with some kind of blue filter over the camera lens?  If this was supposed to make the movie look dark and gloomy, it didn't work.  All it did was make me sleepy.  In fact, I took a little nap while I was watching it.  That was the best part of the movie.

Third, that Bugs Bunny trick where vampire girl shoots the floor in a circle around her and falls through?  I liked it better when Vash the Stampede did it on Trigun.

Fourth, if it wasn't for the fact that they called the vampires that, you'd never know that they were vampires.  You never really see them drinking blood, and they didn't have any of the traditional vampire powers or weaknesses, except for vulnerability to sunlight.

Fifth, ultraviolet bullets.  How does that work, exactly?  An ultraviolet light that kills vampires, that I could see; but bullets filled with ultraviolet light?  Why not just say that they were filled with Sunny Delight?  I mean, that would kill vampires, because Sunny D contains the power of the sun, right?

Sixth, the climax was a big let down.  Vampire girl bites her werewolf boyfriend and makes him into a hybrid of both creatures.  You'd think that at this point he'd turn into a big werewolf with glowing red eyes or something.  Instead, he just turns into a vampire with black skin, long fingernails, and stringy hair.  Lame.  Also, if someone who is both a werewolf and a vampire is supposed to be as powerful as they said, you'd think that he'd just tear the vampire elder apart.  Instead, all he does is manage to hold the elder off for a couple of minutes, and then vampire girl cuts his head off with a sword.  If she could do that, why didn't she just do it earlier?

Seventh, the ending was stupid.  The movie ends with vampire girl dreading the time when the third vampire elder would wake from his slumber and seek revenge on her.  She had an easy enough time waking up the other vampire elder when she wanted to; she could just do that again, only instead of waking him, stake him in his coffin.  I guess that they have to leave room for a crappy sequel, though.

Underworld annoyed the crap outta me, mainly because I hate stuff which is purely designed to make pasty-faced goths go apeshit over it.

Total cobblers.

Meanwhile, I saw A Mighty Wind on DVD at the weekend and thought it was hilarious, highly recommended.

My favourite bits were the discussions between The Folksmen on setlist, and what they'd wear before the show.  Secondly, the dark untones of the back story to The New Main Street Singers:

"I suffered abuse as a child, mainly musical in nature."

Add to the fact that all the dialogue was improvised, and you've got a lovely little gem of a movie. 8/10

Harold and Maude

This is a play I saw yesterday, but apparently, it was made into a movie, as well. I've never seen the movie, so I'm reviewing the play.

You can read the movie script here.

Go read the script. I don't exactly glorify this lovely movie/play in my review.   ;) Also, I left out some details.

Anyway, it's very funny, and they couldn't have casted the rolls better. It's rather uplifting and sweet, and, at some parts, pretty disturbing.

Grade: 99% - A.
