Last year's Season 3 Thread

Sorry if this seems like jumping the gun, but I just couldn't wait.

Personally, I think that this release sounds VERY interesting as season four is one of the best  :)

I'm looking forward to the commentaries. I'd like to hear from Oakley and Weinstein, although they might not get them. And what d'you think are the odds that they'll get Conan in?  :o

O'Brien's involvment in the commentaries would probably depend on how busy he is when they do them.  Evidentally he wouldn't mind doing them.

Personally, it would be interesting to hear from him in the context that he went on to do something so huge, but otherwise I think there are far better writers that I'd be more eager to hear from.

ANYHOW.....season four is my favorite season personally, so I'm looking forward to it eagerly.  However, I still feel they dropped the ball on the third season dvd in some ways, so I hope they do a lot better this time.  Sadly I think this'll be another August release, with an announcement around may.

Yeah, I agree about the Season 3 DVD. I mean I liked the couch gag menus but it really feels like they made absolutely no effort whatsoever with the rest of the menus, which is a shame considering those of the first two DVD sets were good.

I'm looking forward to season 4, even though it might be the last Simpsons' season I buy. It definately is my favorite season. Although, I hope it comes out sometime before the summer/has better special features.

I can't wait for both seasons 4 and 5, and I hope they both come out within the next year, although it's pretty unlikely.

Any particular reason you might not go past season four?  Just curious.

And it aint' coming out before the summer, I can almost guarantee that.  Fox has settled into a yearly August/September time period by now.

I've given up on the Simspons DVDs.  Besides the fact SKY and the BBC have repeated it to death, one boxset a year is too long to wait for a show that has 14 seasons and counting.  Season 15 would be out in 2015, by which time DVD will have long since been usurped by the next format.

Except that once the show goes off the air (if ever), the DVD release speed will probably pick up. Maybe.  :p

Season 4 will probably be the last one I absolutely have to have immediately when it comes out. It's simply the most consistent season in my book, and it's not too sugary (like Seasons 1 and 2 can be sometimes) and not too cynical (like Seasons 5+).

Not to my knowledge, though I'd check out sights such as snpp.com periodically for more info. Last year they got the release date for season 3 out by April, so in about a month or two, we'll probably get a release date for season 4.

Yes, S4 should be very good. Matt said that S3 makes S2 look like S1. I think S4 blows everything else out of the water. Everybody making the show hit's they're stride and the episodes are gold. It's like an entire season of the best of the later S3. Just great stuff.

You see? This is why I want Simpsons to stop. A main reason these DVDs take so long to get out is because Matt and the rest are too busy with the show to do the commentaries. These new seasons aren't so great, so I say, stop after the Season 16 contract, get the DVDs out faster, and do the movie. ...oh wait, if they're working on the movie, then they'll work even harder. Hrrmmm...
Anyway, when I got my season 2 DVD, I was suprised about how good the episodes were. Then when I got my season 3 DVD, I was suprised how much better they were from the season 2s. I hope to feel the same way when the season 4 DVD comes out.

Season 4 probably has alot of 'classic' episodes, and that's part of what makes it great. Just out of curiousity, what episodes are you dying to see, and which ones do you want to hear commentaries for? I'd like to hear the one for "So it's Come to This:A Simpsons Clip Show" simply because I want to here how they decided what clips to use, how they go about writing a clipshow (and for what reason) and how they produce them.

Yeah It'll be intresting to hear commentary on a clip show. and I like to hear from Oakley and Weinstien, I hope they dont have some kind of objection to commentaries or season 7 and 8 might be a bit lacking.

One thing I'm wondering is that some later seasons have 25 episodes, and they seem to have a 6 episode a disc limit because of the extras, So I guess with later seasons there will be 5 disc box sets.

I'm starting to get annoyed at the length of the release though, I'm sure by the time of season 5 and 6 David Mirkin will be running season 17 and 18.

Shadowstar: I think I've said this before, but the notion that the commentaries are holding up the dvds is completely false.  At least, its hardly an acceptable answer as to why these are taking so long.  Season three's commentaries were recorded around late 2002, early 2003, yet the set didnt come out til August 2003 (and given the actual quality of the set itself I doubt they broke their backs making it).  Plus, Al Jean would be the ONLY one holding these things up according to that theory (remember that Matt Groening has had almost nothing to do with The Simpsons past season three, its just fact).  And if Mr. Jean can't schedule six hours worth of commentary time within an entire year, he needs to get a better scheduling system.  Ending the show would not get these things out any faster, especcially after season four when Jean wouldn't even need to do commentaries anymore.

Fox is holding these things up for other reasons, simple as that.  I'm pretty sure one of them is that they don't want to cut into their syndication revenue too much (as much as they make off the dvds, they make so much more off of reruns, and people who buy dvds don't exactly need to watch the episodes on tv anymore)

Also, as irritatingly long as this is taking, it is worth noting that if another format comes out before they're finished they'll probably just continue the seasons on that format.  Its not like VHS where they've had to overhaul everything to a completely different format.  I would imagine the next technology would be very similar to dvds (and that the next player form will be able to play dvds), so they'll just continue them onto that next format.

User: Oakley and Weinstein said a long while back that they'd be glad to do commentaries if they are asked.  That was a very old interview though.  But, I doubt they'd have any kind of objection.

The Scully commentaries might be more interesting though.   I wonder how he'll defend "Kill the Alligator and Run" and so forth.   :D

I know seasons 9-12 will be worth it just to hear there justifcation on the commentaries, I'm sure by then they'll forgotten or just not mention the internets reaction.
I wish George Meyer would do more he only seems to show up occasionly

Well, at the rate FOX is putting them out, we have 6 years until Season 9 comes out. By then, either The Simpsons will be cancelled, or they just won't care enough to defend said seasons.

Actually, I'm kinda hoping it'll be like the Kevin Costner mocking in one of the later Simpsons eps. It'll just be six solid hours of him apologising for what he was thinking.   :D

*ahhhh*

(And if no other member either here or on NoHomers hasn't said the same thing, I'd be very suprised.   ;))

Also, on a slightly related note, if the next storage medium (e.g. Blu-Ray) is optical, I'll be severely annoyed).

I would have agreed its been on tv too much but commentaries make it worth it, Plus There's not much else to spend money on, Its probably not worth hoping for but if season 4 is out by june
then there will be 6 months to december and it would allow season 5 a christmas release.
But I dont think thats going to happen

I speculate that they will set a release date, then delay it two weeks before hand.  It seems like there's always a delay with these things, even though it's been quite a while since the last release.

As much as I love classic seasons of The Simpsons, I refuse to give my hard-earned money to FOX, and inflate The Simpsons' sales numbers. I'll wait until a few more seasons come out, and the previous seasons drop in price. Hopefully they will eventually be sold used on ebay for dirt cheap.

According to http://TVShowsOnDVD.com, at least some commentaries have already been recorded.  Participants include Jon Lovitz (on "A Streetcar Named Marge," I guess) and Conan O'Brien.

I'd love to hear Conan on his episodes! Also, I wish that Lovitz had been able to do commentaries on the Critic DVD, but at least we'll get to hear him on Season 4. Thanks for the info.

I'm definately buying season 4 when it comes out on DVD, since that is my favorite season. As for season 5, I'm still pretty up in the air about buying that one. After that, I highly doubt I'll buy any more seasons. Seasons 6 to present have been run in the ground through syndication.

And Jeff, it'll probably take years for the Simpsons DVDs to drop in price. After all, they seem to be releasing only one season a year.

I'm buying seasons 4 and 5 when they come out.
Some season 6 episodes were okay, but I wouldn't buy the DVD for the episodes. It would be for the commentaries. As for the price, seasons 6 and 7 had (I believe) 26 episodes each, so prices may be higher, even though it's just two more episodes than the season 3 release.

So do I.
Regarding seasons 6 and 7, because there is the cliff-hanger "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" at the end of season six, do you think that both DVDs will be released at about the same time? I highly doubt it, but I was just wondering.

I've wondered about that too (and I guess we won't know til 2006).  My bet would be that they release at seperate times though.  We'll just have to wait (til 2007) for Part 2.  God this waiting is annoying.

I doubt it too. They aired them with a long gap to form a cliffhanger, and that'll probabaly happen on DVD also, but with an even longer gap...

That's the problem, they can afford to. They seem to be taking the long, padded out route to get as many sales as possible before the next release, as opposed to the quick buck route. Unfortunately, they can afford to do this, and every time they'll be able to afford it even more...

I would assume that FOX would keep with their pattern of releasing one boxset per year. I know everyone thinks that recording the commentaries is mainly what holds up the release of these things, but that's not the big thing. The big thing is the fact that FOX can't make as much money syndicating the episodes if all of the fans own all of the episodes.
So, even when the show is off the air, FOX will probably continue selling only one set per year.
