Nemesis? You bastard!

I'll have to go with Star Trek II: The Wrath of KHAAAAANN!

I saw the Motion Picture a couple of weeks ago, and it's actually not that bad a movie.  Okay, the word "Motion" was used tounge-in-cheek, but at least it's actual science fiction, compared to the cheap action flicks Trek has saddled us with during the last decade.

I know this will be unpopular, but I'll go with First Contact. In my opinion the best of the TNG films, and even beats out ST2 (my next favourite) for me.

Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn.  I enjoy ST:TMP, I think that it's a great sci-fi movie, but when I went to the theater, sat down, and WOK started playing, I found myself thinking, this is like how the TV show felt when I watched it.  The thing that sold it for me was the music, in the scene where Kahn is preparing to insert the Ceti eel in Chekov's ear, the music brought back images from the TV show.  The whole rest of the picture just clicked for me, and I felt like a kid, watching Star Trek on the old UHF station at home.

Like the fourth one it is the most fun. Insurrection is a good sci-fi action film but it has so many massive plot holes that it is just painful to watch.

::edit::
You mean supperior Early Star Wars films... The Newer films of both series have not been that good.

Toss up between The Voyage Home and First Contact... but as I voted for First Contact I guess I'll go for that one.

Agree on both accounts. Though I hate the concept of a Borg Queen with a passion (why? Why? WHY!? Why did they have to ruin the Borg more than they already did on V'Ger?), the movie itself was great, mostly because of Zephram Cochrane and the Phoenix situation. Hey, it has Dwight Schultz in it, that automatically makes it great.

ST2:TWOK is definetly #2 and I quite like The Undiscovered Country.

I still haven't seen Nemesis, and judging on the opinions I've read, I wont bother until I can rent it on DVD.

Will someone please erase The Fianl Frontier from this timeline? I believe Annorax have a temporal weapon ship he no longer use.

I still have fond memories of the early movies (yes, even 1 and 3) and will have to go for Wrath of Kahn. I got it on DVD recently and, though its always been my favorite trek movie, I wasn't too fond of some of the extra scenes. Maybe it was just nostalgia.

The more recent movies (all the TNG ones) are pretty disappointing to me. Generations was pretty good, First Contact was better as an action film then a Star Trek film (and for ruining the Borg I can never forgive it) but the last two were ghastly. Especially Nemesis. It was badly ripped off from 'Khan', it barely looked like a Star Trek film, and it had no heart. At least Insurrection had that.

So is every sci-fi film that rolls off the Hollywood cookie cutter.

Don't get me wrong, "Nemesis" is a good film, but it lacks the soul of the earlier movies.

I voted II: The Wrath Of Khan.

Because of the great action, great dialogue ("Khaaaaaaaaan!" ), Kirsty Alley when she was still cute, and those gross earwig thingies.

II, IV, VI, and um, 8 were the best ones.

Even now I can't help squirming with the Ceti Eels. When I was younger I had to fast forward those parts, but now I'm a man I can manage a quiet whimper.

And yes, typical nerd that I am my first TV crush was Kirstie Alley as a Vulcan

I'm still utterly annoyed that I've failed to see Star Trek 3. Not because I've heard it's good or anything, it's just that the Sci-Fi channel shows it so often and I always miss it (it being the only remaining ST movie (apart from Nemesis) which I haven't seen). And there's the small matter of it connecting 2 and 4.  :p

Yeah.  One of the best things about it.

Like when he arrives at Genesis, picks up a creature and wrestles with it until it dies.

"Nothing happening here".  :laff:

I think IV is the "funniest" down to the well-written dialogue, and Spock's "fish-out-of-water" act is brilliant:

Gillian: You guys like Italian?
Spock: No.
Kirk: Yes.
Spock: No.
Kirk: Yes.
Spock: No.
Kirk: Yes.  I love Italian, and so does he.
Spock: Yes.

Star Trek V has one (and just one) advantage over NEMESIS!!!.
It's as bad as Nemesis, but at least you can laugh about the ridiculous story.
You can't say that about NEMESIS!!!

Kirk wants to hug Spock.
Spock: "Captain, not before the
Klingons."

Aside from that, my vote goes to First Contact, because you do have to draw a line somewhere...  ;)
With TWOK ("KHAAAAAAN!" - Best Shatner perfomance ever!), TVH (Hmmm ... LDS) and TUC ("... guess who's coming to dinner" ) close behind.

Nemesis beats Star Trek V on two counts - Shinzon is a better villain than Sybok, and the effects are much better done.

However Star Trek V makes much better use of the main characters than Nemesis.  The TNG films have never really captured the "family" feel of the TNG series, and no fewer then four of the seven regulars had fuck all to do.

Shinzon wasn't somebody you could care about, while Sybok was like Soran a real character with some depth.
And comparing the effects of V and X is kinda unfair, although the effects of V were bad, even for that time ('89)...

Gocad, when I said X had better effects than V, I meant that V's effects were fucked up due to Shanter and the shit special effects guy blowing all the budget before the grand finale.

Actually the effects were so bad, because they couldn't get ILM, who had done the effects for II, III, IV, VII and VIII. But ILM was busy with some other movie at that time, so they had to rely on another firm.
And these days it isn't really a problem to get good-looking effects for a SciFi movie...

But then again, I think you're right. They did have to spend quite a lot to reduce Shatner's butt in post-production...  ;)

The guy in charge of ST:V's special effects was Bran Ferren.  Just for fun, I looked him up on the IMDB.  He hasn't done the effects for a single movie since 1989.  What does that tell you?

Well, they were from, New Jersey, what'd they expect?

Just kiddingg  ;)   Seriously though, in one of the articles that I read about the film, when they went to see the SFX footage, Shatner and co. said that it looked pretty good for a rough cut, how long before the final product?  Thus they were even more horrified when they were told that this was the final product.  :laff:
