As you may have gathered from the very predictable title, this is a Simpsons episode poll, much in the vein of the recent Futurama ones. I know there have probably been thousand of best simpson episode threads, but I thought it'd be fun to try and get a definative #1.

Since there are far to many eps to vote on every one, I'll split it into 2 or 3 season groups and only choose eps with a chance of winning. This is for the first three seasons, and more rounds will be added if this one works out. Tell me if you think I've missed anything out, it'll be added to an extra poll at the end.

Out of the choices, I'll go with 'Bart gets an F'. There's a lot of clool eps in the poll, but that one just seems to stick out for me  :)

How could you not list "Lisa's Pony"? That was the best Season 3! But, out of the choices, I have to go with "Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington" for its smart commentary on politics.

Guess what I voted for?

Flaming Moe's is great, but I had to vote for Homer at Bat for all the great baseball player cameos. It's interesting to note that only a few players from that episode are still playing in the big leagues. Roger Clemens and Ken Griffey Jr. come to mind.

Well Mr. Burns has done it
the powerplant has won it
with Roger Clemens clucking all the while
Mike Scioscia's tragic illness made us smile,
while Wade Boggs lay unconscious on the barroom tile.

We're talking softball
from Maine to San Diego.
Talking softball
Mattingly and Canseco.
Ken Griffey's grotesquely swollen jaw
Steve Sax and his run-in with the law.
We're talking Homer
Ozzie and the Straw.

Heh, amazing that at a board where so many people love the Fry and Leela relationship, they vote for "Homer at the Bat".  Not to say it isn't a great episode, but...

Lisa's Substitute is my favorite episode of ANYTHING.  The story is incredibly moving and relatable, the parodies are great, really the whole thing is great.  Lest we not forget that the Bart subplot was one of the smartest political satires ever on television (though my favorite is "Two Cars in Every Garage..." for that specific aspect), and that the main plot itself had a lot of smart, subtle commentary.

Lots of great classics here (though I love every season 1-3 episode to some extent), but Lisa's Sub just takes the cake.

I should note though, why so few season one episodes? (and why is "Some Enchanted Evening" even there at all if this is supposed to be selective...).  Bart the General, Moaning Lisa, Life on the Fast Lane, and Krusty Gets Busted are all highlights of the series, as are some missing season two episodes like "Itchy and Scratchy and Marge",  " and "Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment".

What's withg the Lisa episodes? Any lisa-centric episode sucks big time, especially that substitute one, that should be on the worst episode poll and get every vote, some grande shit choices for your poll, Homer at the Bat though, that I voted for and is an undeniable classic.

I came up with a list of Simpsons episodes I thought were the best, and it was fairly similar to yours.  Mine included "Cape Feare" and "Last Exit to Springfield" on top.

Of these, had to go with Lisa's Sub..., I think that was the first episode that showed all that the Simpsons could be.

I agree with "Last Exit."  It is probably my all time favorite.  "Sherry Bobbins," "You'll Only Move Twice," and any Simpsons' Family History Sideshow Bob or Lionel Hutz/Troy McClure episode.

Homer At The Bat.  The misfortunes of Mr Burn's star players has me howling every time.

And then they finish on a song.  Perfect.

Surprised The Way We Was hasn't got any votes yet.  Just the title makes me laugh.

I find most of the season one episodes rather crude and IMO they don't frankly have much chance of winning overall, so I just put in 'Some Enchanted Evening' as it's the actual first ever episode.

Everyone, help with the next poll (s4/s5) would be greatly appreciated. So far I've got:
Homer the Heretic
Last Exit to Springfield
Homer Goes to College
Deep Space Homer

Whaddaya think?

I picked Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish, although it was really hard to choose, because they're all so good.  Although my favorite episode is Last Exit to Springfield.  I'm glad to see that it's a pretty popular episode.

Homer Goes to college?  Ick.  The more I think about the problems in that episode the less I like it.  I guess I still like it but...worst episode of season five easily, and maybe the worst of 1-8 barring "another simpsons clip show".  As for season one, what's so crude about season one?  Some Enchanted Evening(which you picked) and Homer's Odyssey are the only crude ones.  Explain yourself.

Anyways, my season 4 and 5 picks:

Last Exit to Springfield
Cape Feare
Streetcar Called Marge
Itchy and Scratchy the Movie
Duffless
Treehouse of Horror III
Mr Plow (a little overrated sometimes, but still a classic)
Lisa's First Words
Homer's Triple Bypass
I Love Lisa
Homer's Barbershop Quartet
Rosebud
Bart gets Famous
Deep Space Homer
Secrets of a Successful Marriage
Edit: Homer the Heretic too.  How did I forget that gem?

"Homer the Heretic" and "Itchy and Scratchy Land" were pretty damn funny.  I don't know how I forgot them.

I also don't think you can rightly consider the Halloween episodes in the ranking of regular episodes.  When I was doing my comparison, I considered each of the stories on their own merits, then I compared the entire episode against the other episodes.  I think that the original Treehouse of Horror is the best, followed closely by the third.  "The Shinning" is my favorite story, sharing company with "The Raven".

Itchy and Scratchy Land would be left out til a poll with season six episodes in it.  Season four has "Itchy and Scratchy the Movie" though.  I agree about the greatness of "Land" though.  One of the better breaches of reality on the show.

As for the THOHs, I don't have much trouble rating them up against regular episodes.  Sometimes each segment is written by a different person, but then no full episode is entirely written by one person anyway.  My rule is, a full THOH will be judged by every sketch together.  There seems to be a consistant rule of quality with them anyway; THOH I, III, and V have the best stories with all of them classics IMO, while, say, THOH X doesn't have anything resembling good stories.

Sorry if I've missed good ones off this poll, it's hard to please everyone. The next one should be better 'cause of the feedback from this thread. As for THOH, is was thinking about doing a poll to decide the best of those, as that way I could write the individual sketches from each.

Edit: And the nominations are...
Kamp Krusty
Homer the Heretic
Mr. Plow
I Love Lisa (not hugely popular but a favourite of mine)
Last Exit To Springfield (obviously)
Cape Feare
Homer and Apu (a classic)
Deep Space Homer
Bart Gets An Elephant (hilarious one)

Not sure about the last one. 'Marge in Chains'? 'Bart Gets Famous'?

For some reason, I can't stand that "Flaming Moes" episode.
