what are some of your favorite songs that were in the movies? Some of mine are top gun the end credit song,cuz at my work we play top gun the moviea lot so the songs grow on me, and i dont wanna miss a thing was good, I'll think of some others later. What are yours?

I also like those little bits of music here and there from Donnie Darko. Like when he first kisses Gretchen. And the Liquid Spear Waltz.

But there's good stuff in those films.

John Williams (Star Wars etc.), Howard Shore (LOTR), Don Davis (Matrixesses), Eric Serra (Goldeneye and Leon), Hans Zimmer (Gladiator) and David Arnold (Stargate, James Bond(?) all did great scores.

Nearly anything by John Williams, Vangelis, Hans Zimmer.

Top Gun I like as well, especially Through The Fire, Take My Breath Away and Dangerzone.

Oh, and the soundtrack to The Truman Show - in particular the credits.  :)

@Faze : PM5K Is the abbreviated form of "Powerman 5000" and they play that really bassy, fast, techno-y song, i dont think it has a specific name, just "Matrix theme". Quite an out of character song actually.

The Imperial March from Star Wars is one of the best movie songs ever written.  Not only does it command respect like a march, it also is not too shy about its evil undertones.  Another Williams march, "The Raider's March", is of equally high definition.  Even if a person had never heard that piece before, he or she could feel that it was from an adventure movie.

Steering away from Williams we find Hans Zimmer.  His work on The Rock is proof that a good score can make a good movie great, and his work on Broken Arrow shows that a soundtrack can be great even if the film is not.

A couple other artists who deserve honorable mention here is whomever scored The Truman Show (particularly for "Father Kolbe's Preaching" ), whomever put together the soundtrack for Twister (the way the violins blend seamlessly into VanHalen's "Humans Being" is amazing), and Danny Elfman.  Elfman has a long repetoire of music that doesn't really sound strange, but sounds like it should sound wierd.

As has been stated before, Howard Shore's LOTR is great, John Williams is great (old John Williams anyway, he's been slipping recently), and Danny Elfman is great (his soundtrack to POTA was really cool, percussion-wise).

As far as "lesser-knowns," Alan Silvestri (Ghostbusters, The Mummy Returns), Jerry Goldmsith (Rudy, Hoosiers, Star Trek (TV), The Mummy), and Michael Kamen (X-Men) do good work. Whoever did Spirited Away did a great job. The soundtrack for Donnie Darko is good -- here I mean mostly the songs, although it had a good score as well.

Just about any track on a movie soundtrack with Paul Oakenfold's name on it is good (I especially like his "Braveheart" remix). Alf Clausen and Christopher Tyng both do excellent jobs in their respective TV series (I hope I don't have to point out which ones   :)).

I simply adore the soundtrack for Zoolander.   :love:

EDIT: Oh oh oh! The soundtrack for Signs, by James Newton Howard, is also excellent.

Indeed it is.  What that guy did with a simple, three-note progression is amazing.  To think M. Night was going to do the film without a soundtrack.

Yes, there is no theme from any other movie with as much impact as the Imperial March.

Dude, I have no idea at all. I havent seen that movie since... ok... like 2 months ago (thank the heavens for DVD's!)... anyhow, I never listen to the words... I only know that classic riff and some guy mumbling words in the background... so in short... I probably fskd up the words. DOh  :p

And I saw Lock Stock and Two Smokin Barrels last night and Zorba's (The Greek) Dance by Andre Rieu works wonders in it.  :)

Out of a complete coincidence, that's exactly what my friends and I did this summer. We'd drive around late at night, blaring "The Power of Love" at passing motorists (even louder if they were playing a really bad rap song.) You should have seen the looks on their faces.  :evillaugh:

"Come What May"- Even though it was featured in Moulin Rouge, the song was written for Baz Luhrmann's film Romeo + Juliet.  A big happy birthday to Baz, by the way.  :)
Yann Tiersan's Amelie soundtrack is just wonderful.  I can listen to it over and over.  I also really like the Michelle Branch-meets-the Donna's style of the
Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack.  Recently, I bought the Chocolat and Uptown Girls CDs, but the latter isn't very replayable, save for three tracks.  I love Danny Elfman's scores, and I'm really eager to hear what he's written for Big Fish.  :)   Klaus Badelt's score for Pirates of the Caribbean and the CD for Freaky Friday (Lash!  :love: ) are in my CD player, but I'm most obsessed with the soundtrack for Once Upon a Time in Mexico.  "Pistolero" by Juno Reactor, "Sands Theme" by Tonto's Giant Nuts and "Siente Mi Amour" by Salma Hayek are on repeat all the time.  I love the various snippets of dialogue on the CD:
"It is so good that when I'm finished, I will pay my bill, walk straight into the kitchen and shoot the cook.  And that is what I want from you my friend; to help me keep the balance by pulling the trigger."

Fight Club comes to mind at once, followed shortly by Go (Dust brothers and BT awww, yeah).

Orchestral, I like Braveheart, The Jurassic park overature.

I love the folk stylings of O brother where art thou.  That brings Amadeus to mind.  The Dune soundtrack is pretty cool.  Now, and you'll just have to take my word for this if you haven't seen it, I mentioned Urusei Yatsura 2 in the anime section, Trust me.  The score for the climactic Baku secne and the harrier flight is phenomenal. 

Even if you don't like anime, Try this movie on for size.  Rent it, and even if you don't like the film, just listen to that great score.

I don't have the CD, but I know what you mean by that song. It's highly addictive! Right along with that other trailer song I'm listening to, "Red Tape" by Agent Provocateur. It was used in the "Underworld" trailer.

Some of David Newman's stuff from Heathers is really good, I like that.

"Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds, from The Breakfast Club.
"Oh Yeah" by Yello from Ferris Buellers Day Off.
"Wake Up" by Rage Against The Machine from The Matrix.
"Another Body Murdered" By Faith No More & Boo Yaa T.R.I.B.E. from Judgment Night.

More Faith No More: "We Care A Lot" from Gross Pointe Blank and "The Perfect Crime" from Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.

And I love a song called "Song For Holly" by Esthero & Danny Saber from Go, in fact the whole soundtrack is awesome.  Highly recommend it.
