The "Twenty Favorite Movies" thread got me thinking: I seemed to be the only person in the world who liked Ronin, I wonder if anyone else feels the same way about some of their favorite films.  That is where this thread comes into play.

Do you have a special place in your heart for a box-office dud or a critical flop?  On the other hand, do you have a hard time understanding why so many people liked a certain movie or why those pompous, buffoon critics gave it two thumbs up?

Please withhold speculations about movies you have not seen.

underrated: Donnie Darko, cause it got little or no publicity here.

overrated: Being John Malkovich

I had never heard of this actor before. For me,  the movie was too philosophical and moralistic.

Yeah, it's hard to take a car chase seriously when they keep switching to bullet-time.  Incidentally, you just mentioned two of my most over- and underrated films.

Overrated - The Matrix. Have never thought this film was all that great.

Overrated - Titanic. One of the worst films I've ever seen. James Cameron ought to be ashamed.

Underatted - The Hitcher. Excellent thriller with Rutger Hauer.

Underatted - Most Of John Carpenter's later films. Such as Prince Of Darkness, They Live and In The Mouth Of Madness.

I also thought Dark Blue was very underatted. Glad I gave it a chance.

I wonder who wrote them...

Another underrated flim is "The Limey", by Steven Soderbergh. He did this one between "Out of Sight" and "Erin B" with the unbearable J. Roberts (most overrated actress)

While I can maybe see how other movies on your list that I like are overrated to you, I really don't see what you could have against these ones, especially Rear Window. Sure, you might think that Close Encounters and the French Connection have crummy endings, but what do you have against one of Hitchcock's greatest movies?

Speaking of E.T. has anyone seen E.T.'s Austrailian (I think) counterpart, Nukie? That movie is just as good or perhaps even better than Spielberg's version.

EDIT: I bring this up because Nukie was very underrated -even for a foreign flick.

Over rated: Spiderman- Being a big spiderman Fan the inaccurices ruined the movie for me

Under rated: Freddy got fingered- To enjoy the movie you have to realize something, the movie (according to tom green in his commentary) is ment to be a spoof of movies in general (besides the gross out scenes like wacking off a horse which are just there to offend people). for example the love scene when Goard lands on the roof of his girlfriends apartment building, it's weird and gross because it's making fun of your sterotypical hollywood love scene Tom Green style.

I disagree about the Adam Sandler ones. He has said him self that all the characters are basicly the same guy with a different accent background etc. and they are never said to be the, be all end all of comedy films. Sure their not that great but most critics don't give them a higher then average score anyway so they are not really overrated. And besides it's fun to turn your brain off sometimes and watch a movie like them that requires little to no thinking

Agreed.  A.I. was one of the only movies I've ever seen that I found myself yearning to for the end to come.  That feeling started around the halfway point of the movie, not one of the multiple points near the end where the movie could have ended.  Dogma and There's Something About Mary just weren't funny.  I haven't liked any of Kevin Smith's work, and Dogma was no exception.  Maybe it was because I was a pretty do-or-die Catholic at the time, or maybe I just didn't find it funny...I'm not sure.  There's Something About Mary was a also a tremendous waste of my time.  Aside from the dog on speed, it was stupid, predictable, and slightly gross.

Crapola, sorry for the double-post.  I forgot where I was posting the first time.

Of the most recent movies I've seen, I'd say Signs is the most overrated.  Great built up scare factor ruined by a completely illogical and moronic ending.  Water phobic alien invaders overlook the fact that Earth is mostly covered in water.  Marvelous.

Oh man, I forgot to add Signs to my list (I did it a while ago).  It was probably the worst movie I saw last year.  It wasn't nominated for Oscars or anything, but it was still highly overrated, I thought.

I'm glad someone finally said it. M. Night Syamalan is one of those guys who tries to convince you at the end of the movie that God is what saved these people even though the way I look at it: Humans are stupid and the aliens ,for landing on a planet full of a chemical harmful to them, were also stupid. The only reason that Mel Gibson, his creepy little kids, and panicky brother ended up winning was because they didn't have a resistance to water. It was pure luck but Shyamalan tried to manipulate people into believing God had saved the family. It sort of reminded me of this classic moment from "Roswell Thats Ends Well":
(I'm not positive but I'm sure it was along the lines of this)
Leela:Then why are you still here?
Fry: Maybe God loves me.
(Bender starts laughing)
Personally, I've never been a fan of M. Night's work but that aside, maybe before they started filming this movie they should have "swung away" at Shyamalan's manipulative head. Sorry, but I'm somewhat picky with what messages my movies try to send me.

Oh. So that's what happened. I could never understand what the point was of that ending.

Titanic has a special place in my gullet for being such an overhyped film, and ending up being such a disappointment. And the same with the Blair Witch Project.

Underrated: Pleasantville, the Frighteners
