Okay, the Dark News, as Stephen King would call it, hit us rabid fans hard in a sensitive place. Not the first time, though, is it?

What cartoons--or if you're desperate, live-action stuff--did you love that never got a decent chance? Or just died too soon? Or broke your heart in some other way? My picks:

(1) God, The Devil, & Bob ran for four episodes. Religious rabblerousers whooped up on it because God (James Gardner) appears to Bob in a form resembling--vaguely--Jerry Garcia. What, you'd rather have George Burns? Some NBC affiliates refused to air it without even reviewing it because of the ridiculous "controversy." Got very very good in the fourth episode. And died. Welcome to America!

(2) Jim Henson Productions' Dinosaurs had a running gag--actually, sermon--about how the dinosaurs were destroying their environment, smuggly assuming they would be around forever. For the final episode, the producers slammed their point home in the most astounding way. Earl, the "Homer" of the family, inadvertantly helps start the Ice Age--but because this was a sitcom, we knew things would be set right by the end credits. THEY WEREN'T. That was the final sermon; one day, we'll do something we can't fix by the end of the episode.

(3) The Oblongs had the most ham-fisted social satire imaginable--toxic sewage from rich people on The Hill turns the poor in The Valley into deformed freaks--but it was so sick and twisted and funny, I didn't care. Based on a popular book, "Creepy Susie," by Angus Oblong. In one episode, a morbidly obese girl, Helga Fugly, lifts her dress to reveal the swarm of mice living in the folds of her back fat. "I call the white one Mitzi!!"

Okay, since some folks need it spelled out in big neon letters   :p  --the "Dark News" of which I wrote is "Futurama" being cancelled/put on hiatus. I'm asking about OTHER shows. You know, shows that AREN'T "Futurama." Otherwise, this would've appeared in General Discussion. M'kay?

I definitely miss Dilbert.  That show had a lot of things going for it.  Oh well, at least I can still see it in the newspaper.

We got to see more of God, the Devil & Bob here in England, but I was a bit disappointed with it. It was funny, but it kind of irritated me when they had the big moral message at the end.

I don't understand why the religious nuts didn't like it though. It seemed to me like it was pro-religion.

Do you mean as in all those 80's cartoons that I watched endlessly when I was a kid or later cartoons and 'animated sitcoms'?

JFYI, racing driver Ayrton Senna used to claim he saw God, 50ft tall, wearing street clothes, years before this show. Completely unrelated to this topic I know but it actually ties in with God's appearance in GD&B. I guess.

Moving back to the topic, I really did like the Dilbert shows I saw and another one that's dissapeared is a show called Stressed Eric or something like that, and I thought that was cool.

Dilbert was a cartoon in the US as well.  It was really good.  I thought it was better than the comics.

I would also like to state that I am happy as a clam that Home Movies got picked up by Cartoon Network, that was one cartoon that didn't need to fall through the cracks.

We need to put The Tick back on TV though, if only the old episodes.  I haven't seen it in soo long.

The Critic: This show had endless possibilities! As long as movies suck, "The Critic" has a non-stop source of material. Yeah, I know there are episodes on the web, but it's not the same.

"God, the Devil & Bob" was quite good, I don't think the nutters could have seen it as the moral message was actually pushed quite hard. It is a pity "Stressed Eric" only hed two series as is was a good laugh  :(

I never saw God, The Devil & Bob, but don't blame it's cancellation on stupid religious people. I think only one extremely conservative station in Utah refused to air it. And there's most likely more than one NBC affiliate in that area, so everyone who wanted to see the show saw it. The fact is, people just weren't interested in watching it.

I do miss Dinosaurs though. That was a funny family show. That final episode where everyone dies had me depressed for like a solid five minutes.

Most cartoon cancellations haven't bothered me though. I would have liked to see Dilbert continue on, but I sort of lost track of the show in the second season, so it didn't affect me too much. Duckman started getting crappy towards the end of its run, so no tears there.

I think The Critic is the only that really pissed me off. And Kryten's right, the web series just isn't the same. The first few webisodes were great, but since then it's kind of trailed off. There's no room for stories or anything, it's just a couple quick hit-or-miss gags and then it's over. Barely worth the download. Sigh...I wish the real show were still on.

I really like Darkwing Duck, best Disney TV series ever. Still, I think it had more episodes than Futurama's got so it didn't do too badly.

How about Freakazoid? There's another show cancelled because Network execs were too stupid to comprehend it.

I couldn't agree more (even if I tried).

Darkwing Duck was like the coolest superhero cartoon ever, and so un-Disney (a good guy with an overinflated ego, a greedy teenager etc). The best part of the show was however the bad guys. Characters like Megavolt, Negaduck, Quackerjack, Liquidator and Bushroot was strokes of genius, in all their insanity.

The Critic: I loved that cartoon. Brilliant characters, and poking fun at Hollywood is an instant hit. All I can say about it's cancellation is: IT STINKS!

Dilbert: Another great cartoon. Granted, it failed to live up to the expectations generated by the strip (but let's be honest that was a big goal to shoot for), and some of the voices felt sort of off. But the same feel was there, and if it had stayed on I'm sure it would have been one of the best cartoons ever. I certainly loved it. It just needed a little more of Ratbert and Catbert (best characters IMO).

I don't get the appeal of Dilbert.  He's like the office Cathy. :shudder:

The Critic rocked.  I loved all the supporting characters and you don't see them as much on the webisodes.

I miss Saturday morning cartoons.  Now it's like they show a (small) handful from 6-7 am and that's it.  And ABC pulled Pepper-Ann, the best saturday morning cartoon in recent years.  (yes, I realize I'm a big lameo, thank you)

The after-school cartoons I miss the most:
Tiny Toons
Animaniacs
The old Doug
Freakazoid...I do wish I remembered that theme song.

And the most missed of the sitcom shows is The Critic. Jay Sherman's dad is plain crazy, in a good way.

My missed 'toons would have to be:
Darkwing Duck: I absolutely love this show.  It's one of the best superhero cartoons ever.  I miss Launchpad and Gosling.  :(

Invader Zim: Call me weird, but this is my second favorite cartoon of all time.  It's so doofy and irrelevant, but that's what makes it funny.  GIR is priceless.  Gaz is that one creepy/gothic person I can identify with.    But what other show can be as golden with a robot screaming, "Tacos!"?  Though I can still catch the last few eps on Nick, so it's not really gone yet... :Sniffle:

Josie and the Pussycats: Yeah, I know, kinda dumb, but I love it anyway.  Same with the live-action movie.

The Little Mermaid: This was my favorite show as a little girl.  I remember how much I aspired to be like Pearl (From "Electric City" ) and loved the episode "Charmed".  But my favorite episode by far is "Stormy the Wild Seahorse".  Sad, isn't it?  :D

Tavicat Comics is the home of two of the talented people behind Invader Zim. You might want to keep an eye out for their excellent Reality Check! comic, which they were considering posting online.

GOO ZIM! Mysterious Mysteries was great, anyway, the cartoons I love and miss are:
Garfield and Friends
Rocko's Modern Life
Ren & Stimpy
The Critic
KABLAM! (the ones with Sniz and Fondue, if any segment on that show should have gotton its own cartoon, it should've been them. Not that crappy extremly crude, nudist-encouraging Action League NOW! What the hell is this teaching our kids?)

Here's a taste of what ZIM is about.
[GIR has been transferred as the brain of the house and ZIM is in the elevator as GIR hums]
ZIM: GIR, take me to the equitment room!
GIR: Do a little dance!
ZIM: No GIR! No dance! Just obey me!
GIR: Dance! [ZIM obeys and weakly dances. GIR decides to go up and ZIM is launched into the kitchen]
ZIM: GIR! You went to far, I'm in the house, I need to go to the equitment room!
GIR: OOOOH! What's this do? [all the electronics go wild.] I'm gonna make toast! [some toast pops out of the toaster and hits ZIM]
ZIM: GIR! Stop this foolishness this instant! [all the electronics stop]
GIR: Aw, don't feel bad master. I know what'll make you feel better.
ZIM: It would make me feel better if this house was back to normal and that you would listen to me for once!
GIR: Uh-huh... but how 'bout some of this! [TV screens with cartoons fly around ZIm]
ZIM: He'll tire himself out sooner or later. I'll just wait.
[1 year later, GIR is still at it and driving ZIM to the edge]
ZIM: AAAAAAAGHH!!! THE MADNESS!!! THE MADNESS!!!

Heh heh, priceless.

Other IZ fans?  I'm in heaven!
GIR: Yay!  We're doomed!

Zim: Uh, is it supposed to be stupid?
Almighty Tallest: It's not stupid.  It's advanced.

Gaz: Dib drank the last soda.  He will pay.

Dib: I made it in!  It's incredible!  I'm gonna try and blow it up!

LOL.  As you can see, I love Invader Zim.  I loved the new ep last night.  I was just watching "Ginger", and an ad said there was another new one next Friday.  I think they're just airing the last 6 eps.  :(   Okay, only a couple more GIR quotes.

Have you guys tried www.yesterdayland.com   ?
There's some great stuff over there.
I'll have to say I never liked the Critic or Dilbert, infact whenever someone at work would reference a Dilbert joke a would think "You do relize you're a freakin' robot right?"
