I voted for Red Dwarf, but Monty Python is a close second for me. Mr. Bean is also good. I don't much care for Blackadder

My vote definately for Monty Python's Flying Circus! Got all the episodes on DVD! Go me! But all the rest are good as well! Except i'm not that keen on Absolutely Fabulous!

The British version was better, who the hell wants to hear an American audience laugh or see Drew Carey?

Ok I was wrong. The American Whose Line? is way better. I mean you don't get Robin Williams, Richard Simons, or Miss America in britain! It's so funny!

Pffft.  You don't get Tony Slattery, Mike McShane, or Josie Lawrence on the American version.

Also, Clive Anderson was a better host, because he had the good sense to stay behind his desk instead of putting himself in the show.

They're all quite good, but the closest call is between Blackadder and Father Ted... Father Ted it is. I think Dougal generally beats Baldrick.

1. I realise Father Ted is not British. I just thought it was so hilarious it deserved to be there. Also, some of the humour is very similar. Also, Brit writers.
2. When I made this poll I was going thorugh a Dinnerladies phase. Please, shut up already.
3. I haven't seen Only Fools and Horses since I was young- it just reminds me of watching the ABC when little but as I can't actually remember the plots, I didn't include it on the list.
4. Goodness Gracious Me and Kumars at no 42 are both hilarious. I didn't know them/ they weren't made when I made this poll. It's from 2001. I live in Australia.
5. Same with Black Books, Little Britain, etal.
6. The Young Ones is better than Bottom. I couldn't fit them both on the poll, so you get nothing. Also, I forgot.
7. I don't know if that smart ass who made derivative comments about John Cleese is still around, but you're an ass.
8. I can make a new and shinier poll, but it will still have Red Dwarf, MP, Blackadder, Ab Fab, Father Ted (aha) on it. Also Fawlty Towers.

Backing up a little, I like dark comedy so I hate Monkey Dust.

Spaced is awesome, with Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson (yes, she did do that god-awful "According to Bex" program, and yes, it made me cry, but that was a one off, I promise), it has to be one of the best British comedies ever. It has lots and lots of nerdy references, and was written and made by mostly the same people as Shaun of the Dead. You must have heard of that. Needless to say, it's great. It was made in 2001 and 2002 in Britain so it won't be on this poll. For more information: Spaced out.. It basically centres around two people in their 20s sharing a flat in London together and all their wacky adventures. Watch it. Now. It's probably on Paramount comedy in England, and I think they were showing reruns a while ago on terrestrial. You can pick up the dvds separately or in two different shiny shiny boxsets for quite low prices. It's worth it.

All of that shameless promotion out of the way, I'd have to say that I slightly prefer Black Books to Spaced. I just can't resist that loveable happy-go-lucky Irish scamp and his bearded fool. And that crazy woman who looks like a heron.

On the poll: Monty Python definitely. It set new bound of wackiness and insanity, and I've been watching it since I was about 5, so it was the first British comedy I got into. I didn't get all the jokes, but it's still the funniest thing I have ever seen. Also, being made years and years ago, it's still funny today. Why? Because it owns you.

My list of British comedies probably goes:
Monty Python
The Young Ones
Black Books
Blackadder
Spaced
Father Ted
Fawlty Towers

Bear in mind that after the first two the positions become very close, and I wuv them all equally really. 
Monkey Dust is good too. I like the dark humour.

I can't stand Only Fools and Horses, how that won best British comedy I will never know. I also hate Little Britain. The jokes they make are funny...the first time around, but now, after having every "cool" person quoting Vicky bloody Pollard, it's definitely not funny. And Red Dwarf never really entertained me, although I can see why people like it.
