I bought several things online through Amazon and RussianDVDs last week and one of the items was delivered out of the blue today well-within the delivery estimate. I imagined that it would be the film Siberiade that I ordered sorta seperately but not really, but no, turns out that I am now the very happy owner of the Firefly boxset. Happy face.

ca: yah, that fucking pig, always pulling over young punks who aren't even doing twice the speed limit - and just for the sadistic thrill of it, after all, it's not like it's their fucking job - and trying to scare you into not dying young in a really exciting accident (possibly with some really bad-ass explosions), like he's you're fucking dad or something... Next time he gives you shit, I'd cut him. Clearly, he's pushed you too far.

No, you're absolutely right Gopher. Police people are just doing their jobs, but then again.... most people's jobs don't entail treating regular honest citizens like criminals. Then then again... you were clearly pushing the limit of what is safe for you and those around you coldy (assuming there were other people around you; if there wasn't, this clearly doesn't apply) which is a positive thing produced for society.

One is legitimate application of authority, the other a flagrant abuse of it.I love how it's perfectly fine to stereotype cops. All cops are naturally the same person, I hear they actually share a single soul between 'em.

I don't wanna stereotype cops.... I'm not sure what DWB is either.... and you'll notice I put multipe sides into my post. They do serve a much needed purpose. However, their job is to arrest people and give out citations. I think citations are a mostly ignorant form of punishment which is actually just a secret manipulative way for the government to rake in more cash. On top of all that, I've run into quite a few cops, and I've had my fair share of people in the police force using their discretion in an incorrect manner. Again, I might be assuming too much into this.... the cop that issued me a citation may have been trying to help me out, he/she may have been having a bad day that day (one could hardly blame them; police don't get much respect), or he/she could just be acting on orders from a higher authority. The thing is, my first point still stands. The police are out to get us, albeit when we mess up, but they are out to get us. I don't trust things with much power, especially the large amount of power police could potentially currently wield easily over me. So I won't blame police for all my problems, since I know they're people too. I treat them with courteousy and respect as best I can even though they scare the life out of me. Besides... part of that blame from the cops totally rests on an inefficient perversion of justice known as the legal system, as also with the politicians who continuously create laws each day without even realizing themselves what those laws are that they pass. Seriously, if the lawmaker doesn't remember/know what the law is, how in the world is an every day citizen supposed to know? And that's where I'll leave off, since this isn't the place for such a discussion.

well, by bringing your own experiences into it at all, you're already assuming too much since I was talking about the specific cop in coldangel's situation, not making blanket generalizations about all cops.and DWB = Driving While Black, which doesn't exactly apply but is really just the most common form of a more general problem of profiling; just replace black with "long-haired," "teenager," "wearing a turban," etc.

Well in the UK doing 70mph in a 40mph (just about the same as 120kph in a 70kph) is pretty drastic if I'm honest. One thing I will say though is that at least you didn't argue with him over it. My godfather is a former traffic cop and still deals with a lot of speeding offences in Norfolk and he has to deal with people who complain about the fact that they got caught breaking the speed limit. This makes my godfather very angry. There does seem a common answer to all of their complaints however...Oh and incidentally I went out and bought a pizza tonight as well. Fun times!

Meh. I drive the way I drive. I drive to the conditions at a given time. Scary and illegal though I may be (when I'm on my own in a vehicle on an empty road), I've never had an accident, not even close. Though I've watched a lot of slow drivers do things that could potentially cause massive ones. But there's no call to be defending cops. They're scum. Fuckers busted me for not having a provisional plate on a service vehicle when I was transporting intellectually disabled clients, one of whom had OCD and removed the plates for his own amusement. Cop didn't care. And then they took three hours to get to my Grandmother's place when a drug addict smashed his way inside and started ripping shit off while she was there. Fuck them. Don't defend them - there's a reason they're called FILTH. They've badgered me constantly, even for tiny things, so I don't care anymore - I know they'll get me for something anyway, so I don't even bother trying to obey the rules. There's no point. Cops in this town have set on me. They 'randomly' search me in the street in front of everyone, and each time they pull me over for a 'random' breath test they spend five minutes looking for something on my car to defect me on. So why do I have an attitude? They're all arseholes. We need another Ned Kelly to take the fuckers on. Kill the lot of 'em.

Coldy, it's probably all in your head. If they really wanted you in deep shit, it's easy for them to plant stuff in your car when they search it. I don't like the cops around here either (My story: got left stranded on the interstate when they took my friend to jail because their breathalyzer didn't work and I didn't have a drivers' license. When the blood test turned out negative, they fined him $200 anyway, for "not coming to a *complete* stop at a right turn". Clear case of DWB. Oh, and just for extra fun, I had a gun drawn on me because I dared to ask them for directions.) but I don't go around provoking them. I got my credit card bill today. I'm sad now

Do not ever call a person who will put his life on the line to enforce the law for the protection of the general public scum, ever. I consider police officers to be my brothers in public service, and I respect them. I know there are corrupt cops out there, and I'm not defending them. Personally, if I was the officer in question, I would have written the maximum fine allowable, and probably written any other infractions. The rules are there for a reason, follow them or suffer any consequences you bring on yourself without whining about it. And for the record, police departments typically do not set monetary penalties. In my state, those are set by the state Supreme Court. The officer is under no legal obligation to write a ticket for less than the set maximum, even if you behave perfectly.

Yeah, gotta back you up on this one. I said the same basic stuff about the police as Coldy, until I took up pistol shooting as a hobby & became a shooter. My shooting range pistol instructor had a saying about the police: "that police officer who's writing you a ticket, who you think is a jerk, is the same jerk that will face down an armed intruder in your house without hesitating. So, give him your respect".

Was it a Colorado State Trooper, Fort Collins Police or Larimer County Deputy who did this to you? We have so few people in Colorado with dark skin (other than the illegal Mexicans on their way to ConAgra in Greeley) that I think the cops actually take turns screwing with them. The first night I drove my Corvette I was driving on Lincoln Ave. The car was unknown, it had paper tags and I got pulled twice that night; once by a Larimer County Deputy and once by Fort Collins Police. Both times they told me that I crossed the yellow line. That was a complete lie, they were checking to see who the driver of an unknown Corvette (granted a mid-90's model) was. I didn't get a ticket either time because I did the "I just got this car, I'm still getting use to how it rides," story. I bet it absolutely fucked their nights up when they saw I was white. Edit: I guess that Coldy isn't a fan of COPS (the TV show). When I was on the wrestling circuit and travelling in South Carolina and Georgia, I sped all the time. When I got pulled, I'd do a little chat with the cop (letting them know I was wrestling that night) and always had a $20 bill paperclipped to the back of my driver's license (Ric Flair taught me that trick). I'd always would get my license back (without the $20 bill) with a stern warning to slow down. I tried that trick once in Sarasota, Florida and the State Trooper arrested me for attempted bribery - handcuffs and everything (Kevin Sullivan had to bail me out to make the matches that night). A lawyer got it taken care of by paying a fine of $500.00. I never tried that again in Florida. [This message has been edited by Ralph Snart (edited 01-24-2008).]

None of the above. This happened at Firestone (local cops). Friend and I were driving back from Denver, we stopped to get a bite to eat at a Wendy's. It was about 1:00 AM, and while we ate our sandwiches in the parking lot, we saw this cop driving by several times, staring at us. He then followed us out of the lot, and put his lights on as we were on the onramp. Since then, we've been warned several times to be extra careful in small towns around FC, where the cops can be extra nasty, especially towards foreigners. Others from my lab have been pulled over at Ault or Eaton with trumped up charges when they were on their way to the radar site at Greeley.

I get enough action with the Fort Collins cops, so I don't need to go to the outlying small towns to find trouble.FC police are nondiscriminatory - they're assholes to everybody - skin color means nothing to them. There's on young cop who patrols Timberline and he seems to have a hardon for me. If I'm driving either the Mustang or Corvette, he will turn around in the middle of the road and stay on my ass until I stop somewhere or leave the city limits. He's already ticketed me once for driving 50 in 45 zone. I'm immune if I'm driving the truck. It's in my wife's name so he may not be aware that I'm the driver.

Nano tanks require very little maintenance after the first few months (a few squirts of nutrients every day, feed the fish, coral filter food) but up to that point it's a heavy time investment. The main thing that deters a lot of people is the cost, although I believe you can get a very basic Nano with all the trimmings and a cabinet for a few hundred squids. It's all about stocking things cleverly. Taking what I have as an example (and bearing in mind I have only two fish in an 80 gallon tank due to a huge outbreak of whitespot) everything is in there to do a specific job which saves you a lot of time and effort. 1 Boxing shrimp (Rocky) - eats bristleworms which can kill other invertebrates. 2 Cleaner shrimp - removes parasites and dead skin before they become a problem. 1 Cleaner wrasse (Gordon) - ditto. 1 Clownfish (Nemo) - hardy as hell, very difficult to kill while you're still learning about additives and stuff. 1 Sea slug (Herbert) - eats big bits of macroalgae. 2 Mithrax crabs (Awesome 1 & 2) - eat hair and bubble algae. 15 turbo snails - ditto. 15 blue leg hermit crabs - ditto. 1 clam (2 deceased this week ) removes nitrates from the water. 1 green starfish (Patrick) - eats rotting flesh. 1 sand sifting starfish - eats the shit that settles in the sand. 5 sifter snails - ditto. 2 peppermint shrimps - eat pest anemones. 2 porcelain anemone crabs (Peter and Lois) - filter rubbish out of the water with their fronds and eat it. 1 pencil urchin (Bomb) - eats algae on the rocks. 1 spiny urchin (Spike) - ditto, and the glass too. The filter, sump and skimmer do the rest - for an 80 gallon tank it's an incredibly low maintenance job. Stocking a 34 gallon nano like this would result in only a few minutes tinkering time - the vast majority of creatures that clean up take more out of the tank in terms of waste than they put in. Actual fish are really the only creatures that add more - and you can choose those to serve a purpose too - I had a pyjama wrasse to eat parasitic snails, a powder blue tang and lawnmower blenny to help with the algae. As long as you do research first it's really rewarding for very little hassle in the long run. It's only when you get whitespot or similar that you have to be really proactive (in very general terms). [This message has been edited by Sil (edited 01-24-2008).]
