Man, competency interviews are tough, especially over a crappy phone connection with a French accent guy. "Trying to remember a time you solve problems and overcame expectations and did a barrel roll in a helicopter 5 years ago while programming a PENUS PENUS PENUS program..." I CAN'T EVEN REMEMBER YESTERDAY DAMMIT! Anyhoo, hopefully I'll get an actual interview and eventually a job with HP out of it. And now, off to the dentist.

Ugh, damn crazy accidents, I have had some doozies lately. A few days ago accidently missetup a CB radio so that when it transmitted it caused the sound to come out over every speaker in the room, and REBOOT AND CRASH every computer in the HOUSE. WHOOPS! Someone told me that as I didnt use an antenna tuned to the paticular CB I most likely put out an overmodulated signal that could be picked up by anything metal. Well frack me hard, oops! Mid last year accidenly did something that CRASHED a web based MMO fully for TWO WEEKS Game is at http://space.coldfirestudios.com I asked one admin if a paticular thing was acceptable. they said they had to ask another admin and get back to me, they did and said it was ok. I later asked the admin who the other admin asked what they thought of it, they just laughed and said they heard about it, nothing about not doing it. So I started doing it, others asked me how it was done so I told them. Apparently that build caused small errors in the database, that as more people did it exponentially fracked the database, ending in a two week crash. Basicly it was a way to get a class of weapon on a scout (space based game) that a scout was not ment to have (did not give ANY power advantage, was just funny) it was basicly giving a scout fighters instead of beams or missles. They didnt do any more damage, but the idea of a tiny little scout having a wing of fighters is just funny to attack someone with. And scouts are the weakest ships, so its no MIL advantage, just funny. Apparently scouts having fighters which they arnt ment to have makes the database have kittens when calcing battles. So when many people were doing it at once it crashed the whole game. I was going to get in massive trouble, but I keep COMPLETE logs of all my IRC and IM conversations. I compiled a full record of my asking about it and getting the green light to do it. In short, my logs saved my ass from a permaban. I rarely screw stuff up, but it seems my screwups lately are cutting a very large swath of damage! Just wondering how BAD the news frellup will be.

Someone told me that as I didnt use an antenna tuned to the paticular CB I most likely put out an overmodulated signal that could be picked up by anything metal. Well frack me hard, oops! How freaking much power are you using? A stock CB delivers only 4 watts output power. Even if you used a peice of aluminum foil for an antenna you should burn the radio up first before being able to overload a shielded computer, and at the 11 meter band, even harmonic freqencies shouldn't be a problem. A mismatched antena would cause a high SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) that would cause a high resistance, decreasing the transmitted output at the antenna and eventually overheating the transmitter, killing it. But, if you have said CB connected to an poorly shielded linear amplifier, you can conceivably fry most electronics in your house by signal overload and amplified harmonic frequencies. (My Heathkit 2 KW linear amp once had a faulty shield cable. It destroyed TV reception through the entire neighborhood and would light up a florescent light tube - 6 feet away from the linear amp.) The radio geek in me would love to go to your place and look at the setup and figure out how the damage happened. Geeks like me do that sometimes. A few years ago I had a problem with harmonics playing havok in my neighborhood. I mentioned it on the 80 meter band one night. The next day none other than Art Bell called me via phone to diagnose my problem - he was right. Ralph 'General Licence Amateur Radio Operator since 1976' Snart

The CB had what I think is a N-connector for an antenna on it, I used this mag mount antenna I have for a differnt CB that used a RCA type plug, I clipped the cable and only connected it to the connector, I was only running a test, not going for full use. Antenna was very similar to a normal radio extending antenna.
I think it was the fact odd voltage was going thru the soundcard, I could hear what I would say over the CB in my headphones and over my speakers in the room. I have an external breakout box for my audigy sound card that is well away from the computer and was about 2 feet from the antenna. One computer may have just restarted ealier, by my other machine in here rebooted too.
odd thing is, first thing I knew of my PC fracking up was my PDA making a undocking sound, I had already been hearing the CB over the speakers and messing with that. I went to the computer and it was seemingly off, but the power light was still on, so I turned it off then back on. windows came right back, although I HAD it disabled somehow just hibernated.
went back to using the CB this time the computer had total kittens and shutdown hard, came back up and kept asking for its bios flash file, now I was paniced, rebooted it a few times, kept asking.
Powered it off for a few min, powered it back on and it came back on ok and booted up, but sheesh that was not a good thing.
really dont know how a mere 4w did all that, but yikes.

Betcha don't do that again.
If you haven't fried the transmitter output circuit, get a decent antenna. You won't get any range (transmission or reception) from a magnetic antenna that's not attached to a large piece of metal.
I bet you can get a decent ground plane antenna and RG58 cable from ebay for almost nothing.
Man, I have several thousand dollars worth of ham radio equiptment in my closet that I can't use because my HOA won't let me erect a 50 foot tower to place my stack of antennas - selfish dogs!
Do enjoy this little gem - back when I was in South Carolina, I had an entire room in my house dedicated to my ham equiptment with a 60 foot tower bristling with antennas. A woman who lived two miles down the road tried to sue me, the local radio station and a cell phone tower. She said she was unable to concieve a child and that our 'polarizing radiation' was preventing her pregnancy. She was a loon and probably couldn't get pregnant because no sane man would get near her.
As for super-powers derived from exposure to radiation, the amount of power I was driving with that Heathkit SB-220 was more than most of the local AM radio stations. Stock it was suppose to give out 1,000 watts CW or 2,000 watts SSB. After a few mods, larger capacitors, wiring it for 220 volts rather than 110, that bastard pushed 1,600 watts CW and 3,000+ SSB. I'm sure that I have some cellular genetic damage from sitting so close to that linear.
The ability to clear a room with a single fart - is that considered a power?

How much power are you allowed to put out at 2.4ghz with your license? I wonder because people setting the long range wifi records are at most using 1.5w and I know of antennas like http://www.radiolabs.com/products/antennas/2.4gig/stage6.php that can take 100w and have a very narrow beam width. with the proper licences and setup could BLOW current records out of the fracking water. I am thinking of trying a atheros (they can listen on one antenna and transmit on the other) on each end of a link, using a large dish to listen, and max fcc wifi power on the transmitter to see what I can do. Can't do that any time soon though, currently recovering from spinal surgery and not working. But when I can it would be damn nice to see if I cant get a group of people with much higher power licenses together to run a rig between two far far apart mountains. I had read that with a ham license you were allowed 100w instead of just 1w or whatnot, if the current record holders were using just 1.5w using dual antennas as amps can be dirty and effect the cards reception might really be able to make one bloody hell of a long range link. and its a full antenna, magnetic mount with a long colapseable antenna on it, part of anther CB's kit, for mounting on the roof of a car, but antenna instead of being the whip like antenna is much more like the retractable one on rabbit ears, stereos and the works.

If I don't hold it silence, no signal. I built something that turned ME into the antenna. It turned me into an antenna instead of me turning it into one. DAMN IRONY!

I heard it was -40ºF in North Dakota and Minnesota. And I thought the temperature in Baltimore today (20sºF) was a tad bit cold.
If it was below 0ºF around here I'd just stay inside all day. You just hope the power doesn't go out, futuramafreak. If the power went out and it was that cold where I live then I'd run outside to a car and sit in there until the power comes back on.

Holy crap, that's cold...
wow, we were really lucky on our trip. It wasn't really that cold anywhere. Even in Canada, when we arrived in Banff we were told it was -30ºC just the week before - phew. We got there at it was a "mild" 0-5ºC all week. Same with Vancouver and Whistler. It snowed in Van a week before we got there! Yeesh.

Self-hack job? Or did you get a pretty woman to give you layers VF: you should see ABF do the reinactment... hilarious. ABF: I'm going to assume you and I will have the same amount of stamps from this trip, therefore the same amount of Nixorbucks. Meh, I'm lazy. Really? N$40? That can't be right?

And yeah, I guess it adds up to about 8 stamps... Arghghgh now I need to know! Where's my damn passport?
We dont' get stamped for driving thru belgium and netherlands. Only when passing thru customs... like at an airport - or when you get stopped for a drug check in Calais *shakes fist*
