Call technical support, jiggle the mouse, turn him off and on, etc.

Nerdo, funny you mentioned streamers in your post, check the last post in the last thread.  :p

I get it!

Yeah, slipstreaming the disc sounds like the best plan, so I don't have to do the Partition Shuffle to get everything together on one disc.  Unfortunately, you need a DVD-RW, which I do plan to buy on my remaining Circuit City gift card, but won't for a few days.  What's the main difference between XP Home and Pro, anyway?  I don't think I ever bothered finding out for real.

Anti-Virus killer?!   :p
AVG! Anti-Vir! CHOOSE!

Nerdo: I think they're mostly admin options and stuff, see here.
Partitions are very useful for backing up stuff, OS can be wiped and reinstalled easily on one, everything else on another.

Cool an effect! Firefox tab extension that mimics Vistas 3D Flip thingy.

Hey, more fun stuff.  My new PC doesn't want to be Remote Desktop'd into by my tablet.  After an hour or so of pinging and fiddling with Norton Firewall, I've gotten it so the mobile definitely sees the desktop, and vice versa.  I also made sure to turn on the Terminal Service on the desktop, then went to the Remote Desktop Connection on my tablet, typed the (correct) IP Address of the desktop, hit connect, and couldn't get a connection.

What am I doing wrong so far?

So the keyboard for my Logitech LX700 Wireless Desktop kinda totally died recently. With no prior warning it just stopped working. I switched the batteries for new ones and attempted to reconnect. Nothing. Is it DOA or am I missing something obvious?

So...Slipstream it is.  Yay, I found the one difference I care about.

Funny, there still seem to be a lot of services related to it.

Hm, well XP home still has a terminal services viewer, just not the server (which I always thought was odd). You can get some pretty effective VNC packages now though (just make sure you open the right ports on your router) - I think some of them will let you log in like terminal services does - just not at the same time as another user.

OK, now my problem (slightly less technical)...

Over the summer, a little fly flew into the TFT of my laptop. Not knowing what it is (and being an idiot) I crushed the bastard, so it is now sandwiched between the backlight, and the TFT, right in the middle of the screen. Anyone got any suggestions of how to get it out? Do you think my apple "educational offer - limited parts and labour warrantee" will cover it (computer in question is a 17" macbook) or should I try and take it apart myself... hmm...

So, router.  I'm the shit at these things and I can't get it to work.  My house is networked with the modem in the basement, so I have a broadband port in my wall with a cable coming from it.  Cable to computer works fine.  Cable to router to computer doesn't.  I've tried multiple cables and multiple router configurations with brand new routers and brand new cables.  Limited or no connectivity every time.  I've switched routers around, done everything.  Can't get it to work.  (The router is important for other things that use broadband, so right now all I have is teh computer and things that use WiFi set up.)

Get a client that kicks and bans peers that constantly give failed hash pieces.
µTorrent!

Most clients should have this built in, and only two clients are allowed on all trackers (Azureus and µTorrent, others are banned on various trackers for not sticking to BitTorrent protocols properly, for private flags and adware and such rubbish)

i am using azureus... but still, it can't be that ALL torrents only send bad files and i can't get anything downloaded propperly

just tried for the hell of it and even knoppix won't download... so it must be something else

I think there's a seperate plugin that does the kick/ban thing for Azureus, "Stuffer" it's called.
Edit: Found the link.

I don't really understand the peer selection myself, but whoever you're downloading from must be sending the bad pieces, and these peers are being selected each time, could be just bad luck or something I don't understand on the tracker side of things.   :hmpf:
In any case, the kicking banning thing should fix it.

I assume you learned how it works and configured it and now it's systematically kicking and banning any peers that send you bad pieces... which might take a while.
It works for me, but mine's been on since I first installed µTorrent years ago.
I don't know what else I can do for ya!

I wouldn't know what to show you, you don't have to configure mine, it's automatic and built in (not a plugin), that's why I use µTorrent and not Azureus!   :p

There is a slot on your motherboard that you graphics card fits into, if it is older it will be an AGP slot, if it is newer it will be PCI Express of some variety, AGP cards will only fit into AGP slots and same for PCI-E.
There will also usually be a 4-pin power socket on the graphics card which a 4-pin connector from your PSU must plug into or the card won't work!

Disconnect your monitor cable, open the case, unscrew (philips head, usually) the backplate (the bit of the gfx card that sticks out the back of your case so you can connect your monitor) remove any power connector if there, and wiggle the graphics card out of its slot gently.
Then install the new one with those instructions in reverse.

Now, who wants an annoying alarm clock?

When the alarm goes off it launches a helicopter thing and you have to catch it and put it back in position to turn off the alarm!

I've got enough annoying shit in my life, thanks for asking.

Nurdbot, depending on how old his machine is, may not even have an AGP or PCI Express connector.  He might be cursed witha plain ol' PCI slot.  In that case, there's very little value in upgrading the video card - just scrap the whole machine and start over.

If you are replacing the video card, follow Faze's instructions, but follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation.  There may be issues around coordinating when you plug in the hardware relative to installing drivers.

It got a bit annoying after a while though.   :p
Maybe they can speed it up in future versions.
The newest extension I got is URL Fixer, if you type in "peelified.cmo" it will fix it to "peelified.com", and other typos too, awesome!

Could be handy if they did it for typos in textboxes, along with the new spellchecker thing.
I think a lot of people don't know that FF2 underlines wrong spellings, but you have to install a dictionary for it to work!

My PC risks getting chucked out of the window...

My Battlefield 2 and Flight simulator keeps crashing to the desktop. I have the latest version of DirectX ( i think, December 2006??) and graphics card drivers.

Any ideas

man, faze, you just saved me so much time mentioning firefox's spell check.  no more going to dictionary.com every two minutes.  speaking of which, there's a free definition tool for firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/4037/ also very useful.
