THE Crocodile Man, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said.

It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Not totally unexpected, but still sad.

As I have always said, he was one crazy man.

I'm still a little skeptical. He's 'died' several times.

I heard this on several different australian radio stations and from several different news websites. Its true...

Although i still hold out hope that this is some big conspiracy and when i wake up tomorrow it will all be ok.

I'm afriad it's a true story - it's been picked up by AP and Yahoo.
 http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060904/ap_en_tv/obit_irwin

It's aways hard to accept death when somebody has been portayed as being 'bigger than life'.  In a lot of ways, Steve Irwin was bigger than life.

I don't know why, but i actually do care that he's dead. Its strange, i actually think i'll miss him. I just had to abstain from making a horrible tasteless joke making his death worse by comparison to a number of world tragedies and events. But i'm sure you can guess what i was getting at. EDIT: If not see Robi's post below.

This has got my insides in an uproar... I loved that man. And to think he was the father of an infant makes it even worse...

Sad. His poor children.  :( If you play with fire though... at least he died doing what he loved.

The girl at work ran in saying she heard it on the radio, and within one minute Robiben was texting me the news and one minute later my housemate phoned me too.. holy fuck shit.
I just told my dad too.

 :nono: Terrible.

I feel sorry for the children, too. As much as he irritated me, he didn't deserve to be stabbed to death by a stingray.

Damn.  Sad, but it had to happen eventually, I suppose...then again, Steve Irwin was the sort of guy whom you expected to die in his bed at age 94, surrounded by his family and friends, just so you could comment about the irony of it.

RIP, Croc Hunter.

Worse is that his wife was in a remote location in Tasmania at the time, and so the news was all over the internet before she even knew.

yeah... too sad.  Reminds me of some important advice my father gave me once though "Son, never try to have sex with a sting-ray."  To this day, I still try to live by those choice words.

Hope yer huntin' crocs up there in heaven Mr. Irwin.  :(

Wow... all kinda unbelievable.  The lack of sure confirmation sure doesn't help with the denial.  I've always liked the guy ... this is all kind of a shock ...

I was really shocked when I came on line and saw a headline about this, he ws an entertaining guy who helped make nature and conservation interesting, especially to youngsters.

My feelings exactly. Everyone was making jokes about when he mearly fed his baby to a croc, and just in general how batshit insane he is. But i think its a real tragedy. Horrible way to go.

Same, for some strange reason. At least he died doing what he loved, but it really is no way to go, being stabbed by a stingray

I found out about this about 3 hours ago, and am still feeling terrible, if not worse. As an Australian, I feel like I'm missing something on the inside, y'know? Plus I have my friend who idolizes him ten times more than I do, and it's her birthday. I mean... Oh he wasn't 'stabbed'by the stingray. it hit him in the chest and he was spurred with poison.

Still a sad death. If only it had been by age or a croc :'(

It sure is a loss, not only for his family, but also for his cause. Of course he came always across as some sort of lunatic in his shows, but you have to admit, that despite the fact that he may have reinforced some stereotypes about Australians with his behavior, he did succeed in raising awareness for wildlife preservation. To me he was a very dedicated man and most likely very serious about his work. RIP Steve.

he was a bit of a nut... really, but he was just part of australia.. he really HAS saved lots of animals, and his conservation efforts are totally amazing..

Quite a nasty shock, and, yeah, slightly unbelievable (as in "I still can't believe it etc" ).

While I rarely watched him, I still liked him and I was aware of just how present he was on TV and media - you do often think that big celebrities become immortal - so his passing will seem very strange for quite some time.

But I mean, Ellen DeGeneres was involved in a car crash on Friday - she escaped serious injury. But I mean, even the fact that she was in a car crash is slightly shocking - you don't expect celebrities to be involved in things like that, even though car crashes must kill hundreds of people across the world every day.

It's a shame he didn't die in a crocodile attack though. That would have been pretty funny.

Ouch, he had a wife and kid(s?).

He so overtly jolly, like some kind of thin version of Father Christmas. It's a shame.
