Bah!
I'm playing around with Paint.NETs Magic Wand and Lasso tools, but it still leaves pixels all around my object.

Also, Paint.NET > MSPaint.

It looks kinda similar to PS. you can use the magic wand to select areas of similar hue but aside from that, either erase or clone to get rid of the rogue pixels, there is no easy way to do it. If you have a halo of pixels, make sure you haven't got anti alias ticked.

Other news: interesting stuff here!

interesting stuff where?

I'm finishing up a piece that's pulled me from my bender animation. I'll share it in a few days.

In the mean time some of the work I've done at my new job has gone public.  if anybody's curious, I did the 360 for the ford edge website:  http://www.fordvehicles.com/crossovers/edge/allnew/  if you skip the intro you'll find a link to it in the lower left corner, just click "view colors." I designed the lighting and materials, the geometry was provided by the client.

Yeah, it's tedious but I have to go around the edges and then magic wandify it, MS Paint nevar had the antialiasing though, awesome-o!

Nice work show, I can see some red outlines with the darker colours though, but meh.

yeah, good catch, they actually only had me make orange paint and then their flash guy used the alpha channel to overlay the other colors.

I should really get to drawing again.  It's been quite awhile and this is the last *real* drawing I've done of any kind.

Nice tiger.  I've been thinking that too, that I should start drawing something again.

Speaking of which, I had a burst of inspiration last Monday and turned a doodle from my Calc notebook into a full scale (albeit badly scanned) drawing.

That is a nice drawing!  I have to start drawing again.  My nephew asked me to draw him Spider-Man or basically any Marvel comics character.  The lil rascal, he takes after his uncle too much in his kid days.

I realized recently that they updated my company's website with some of the earlier things I worked on  :D

My first wagon (modeled)

My first truck (lighting, texturing, rendering)

My first ugly edge (lighting, texturing, rendering) [They wanted it that way]

hah, the funny thing about that is that the interior is a photograph we took at out studio when I was first starting and I didn't know how things were run.  So it was pretty shocking walking into a massive photography studio where they have this brand new car in there, missing the whole roof and the whole right side.  Really weird/surreal.  you wouldn't think they actually disassemble the whole car for that stuff.

Actually, I don't think they take them apart to do that, I think they build them specifically missing certain parts/panels etc for the technical photographs and such.  It'd be too labor-intensive to take parts off, I'd think.

I agree that it seems like it be too labor-intensive (and expensive), that's why I was so surprised.  They actually had it's door panels and everything off to the side.

Yeah that is a cool one.  It was before my time, I'm curious how much of that was retouched and how much was a pure render. I haven't gotten a chance to do anything that creative for them.  just some plain catalog renders.

hah, it's a new trend, cars that have the carrying capacity of station wagons but they're not called "station wagons" cause that doesn't have cool connotations.

anyways, I'd post this in the 3d thread but I think about two peelers would bother checking the thread.  This an important portfolio piece so if anybody has any suggests of what would really help this image or what really hurts it, lemme know.  C&C welcome.

It's not as great as I was expecting but I think it's acceptable.  I've spent too long on it and I need to get back to animating bender.

That's damn cool, invisible bowl right?
Probably a trick of the eye, but the right edge looks a bit wobbley.

If thats a shark it'd be cool to see his mouth in the shadow.   :)

Edit: Oh yeah, and I like how the inside fish looks sad! Heh, like sees his dead friend and saying "Rupert? NOOOO!! He was so young!"  :D

Thank you very much you guys, I'm glad to hear you like it.

Faze, you're right about the right edge.  it is a bit wobbley, so is the left actually.  I used a displacement map to try to make it look as though it were water that iss sort of suspended.  I'll look into maybe retouching a mouth in the sharks shadow, depends how believable I can make it look with the lighting angle.

I got lucky with the fish on the inside looking sad, I'm glad you noticed.  The water refracted it in just the right way.  though I did spend an entire afternoon positioning, rendering and repositioning the fish till I looked right.

That's mighty good, Show, but if I really must find something negative to say, then I guess I think the caustics look a little like smoke rather than... you know, caustics. But I'm not sure that's not entirely up to the application or renderer to decide. Soft shadows, maybe?

Show: Wow. That is most supremely badass. I am now even more in awe of your talent than I already was, and I didn't think that was possible.

I saw the wobbliness but assumed it was deliberate, like you were modeling a giant drop of water without the bowl; I assumed the effect was intended to be that the fish out-of-water simply swam too far, possibly chased by the shark...

If I had to say something constructive, I can only think of two things (and they might both just be the moderate amount of alcohol coursing through my veins). First, the dry fish doesn't feel right; if he's dead, his fins should be more limp, while if he's not, he should look more, I dunno, desperate? The face is right, it's just the fins that aren't quite fitting for me.  Second, the globe looks blue-green, probably because of the vibrant green of the plant and it's reflections. This green isn't present in the shadow, which it probably shouldn't in reality but I feel like it would look better with a hint of that green to it anyway... I'm less confident of the value of that comment, though..

Pikka makes a good point too; I think the strange feel comes from the fact that it is a projection through a rippled sphere as well as the rippled bottom, which creates the smokey complexity that just feels wierd. Not sure what you could or even if you should do anything about it tho...

I think I told you this before, either re: the bender or the fry, I forget which, but the fact that you produce something that amazing and are disapointed speaks volumes for your eye, dedication, and potential.

Thank you gopher and pikka.  The caustics were rendered in a seperate pass so adjusting them isn't too bad and I can see immediate results in photoshop, so I'll look into adjusting the contrast, hue and saturation-maybe sharpen it and add a hint of green- we'll se what works.  I'll play around with maybe bending the lower fin or trying some motion blur.

I was considering the soft shadows as well pikka.  I guess I was in too much of a rush to just get this done because it feels like I've been working on it forever.  I'll see about finding the time and motivation to try out those things you guys suggested.  thanks again.

@Show - I love that fishbowl. Does it need a shine? even though the shadow does great at showing the lightsource and it might hurt the composition. Are you applying to art colleges now? you'll do great.

What I'm working on... I've always liked cats and bug-like things - I've reused 2 of these characters from seperate pieces.. some peelers might remember. Yes there's a bit of zoidy in the flea.

This guy is a lovable parasite  :D

The premise of the animation is to teach kids that even parasites can be helpful and as the two characters interact through the conflict, they need each other just like a family unit. And of course it's going to be strange as hell  :D

Cute animals are easier to draw if they are squished and compressed into basic shapes.

Thank you.  By shine do you mean something like a specular highligh on the water or a blooming effect or something?  The shadow and the fish made it tough to frame in a saticfying way, but the two are so critical to me I couldn't really come up with a good alternative.  It's always a pleasure seein you around the art thread, I'm glad to hear you like it.

I've been at community college for over two years now so yeah, I'm about ready to move on and submit my portfolio to some art school.  Thank you for your reasurrence.

I've always enjoyed the style of that cat of yours.  It's very unique looking and it sounds like you've got a very good premise for it.  Are you animating all this just for fun?

Woo! I'm contributing!

I used to do origami, but for some reason I stopped. It's been two or three years since I did any, but today I decided to start again!

I opened the book, found a model, modified it to fit my needs, then folded away. I then grabbed a couple of Monopoly pieces, a book and a sheet of printer paper, and put it all together.

Behold!

I just sent it to Ryan North!

it's a pretty nice layout.  you manage to get the complimetary red and green together without makin it exude that christmasy feel.

Any who, I finished another long running portfolio piece tonight.  It's gone through a few different looks but I'm pretty happy with where it's at now. I enjoy reviewing the progression of where it was to where it is now, it just goes to show that you never stop learning.

High-res version

Clearly influenced by futurama, however I took a handful of steps to try to create a unique toon look that has a really good sense of depth as well as slightly more physically accurate lighting.

Now I'm gonna get back to animating bender for real this time.

btw, I intend on eventually creating an animation within in the skooners universe.
