As he said, unless Dell have (spent money) on making Dell specific parts like CD drives (I know they have with power-cables, but those are cheaper to make and adjust), then any drive will work. Usually it's a custom plasic case around a bog-standard metal box where any standard PC equipment (DVD drive, floppies, HDDs and such) can go, not just Dell products. Just double-check your warantees beforehand.

Thanks for the help. I think we've voided the Warantees though.

A shame really, but meh...

I plan to get a new system soon anyways for the next 5 years.

What do you get when you stick a 32" LCD TV to a Media Centre PC?

Fujitsu Deskpower TX!

Wireless keyboard and mouse, remote control, DVD Writer, 600GB hard drive, etc.

Ok, you can't add your own components to it, it'd be crappy for games becasue it has integrated graphics and mid-range RAM, but if this thing was upgradable and about half the price, it would be awesome!

Microsoft logic for you:

I took a 1gb stick of ram out of my PC, and now it's running faster..

Bugfixes can't hurt, though, and sometimes you run into problems with older firewalls and new installation procedures, for example if Microsoft re-vamp their update mechanism or some such. In such a case it can be a pain in the ass to figure out which Windows components legitimately require conections on which ports while updated firewalls usually know that already.

I need an application that can create speech bubbles over just normal images.

I know you can do the thing with Photoshop, GIMP and several other things like it, but it requires tedious mind numbing work.

Open MSPaint. Draw an ellipse. Add the tail. Fill with grey. Copy+Paste as transparant layer. Cover grey with white. Not tedious. Not mind-numbing. Pretty damn easy. Stop complaining.

Hey guys,

I just built a new PC, but ever since i accidently turned it off by the mains, XP takes ages to load (i meant just after you boot it up, not when logged in)
Should i re-install XP?

Slow to start booting after you push power?
Or do you immediately start seeing BIOS info and POST stuff?

Either of these problems probably won't be fixed by reinstalling XP, as the BIOS needs to sort itself and the hardware out before its ready to give the OS the go ahead.

Hope you didn't b0rk your PSU or motherboard!

Time it with a stopwatch or something, noting key moments, like when you see your BIOS info, windows loading screen, and the windows blue login screen.

The motherboard and CPU is getting it's act together, and the speed from the AMD 3800+ is showing again

Not even a script or something for GIMP that automatically does that crap?

Microsoft Word in the drawing toolbar.
Do a couple of them on a page, shapes you'd use in different sizes, then Print Screen them and save them in a bitmap file.
Then you can copy & paste them when you need to use them later!

Sadly, I don't have Microsoft Word  :(

You'd think by now there would be an application for this.

Yeah, that would probably be the reason he doesn't have it.

Nurdy, OpenOffice Writer has similar drawing tools to Word, including the speech bubble callouts.  If you want to follow Faze's method, you can get OpenOffice for free.

make a new layer, use the custom shape tool and select the speech bubble from the list of available shapes.  you can get fancy and have it draw a path instead, then go in and modify the bezier handles to customize the shape.  You can select and fill your path with white or stroke the path to outline it. after that just drag a text box over it and etc...

Is that a picture of a girlfriend behind you in that pic, show? She's only a few pixels high, but she looks cute. I'm tentatively hating you now, unless you tell me it's just a sister or an ex or something.

Oh, and while you were in photoshop, why didn't you do red-eye correction?  ;)

haha, FF said the same thing when she saw that picture.  It's my sister. unfortunitly, I have no other special ladies to display on my desk at the moment.

Good point about the red eye, I suppose my blood shot eye drew my attention away from my red pupils

I don't have PhotoShop either. If I did, I would be asking how to do it in PhotoShop.

I'll try OpenOffice Bankrupt. If any of you guys are looking for software than can open a niche, something that can create speech bubbles and other stuff for comics much easier would be a great idea to put to market.

There is one - I forget the name, but it comes with a free sub on the latest iMacs etc.

Also, GIMP is fine for that kind of stuff - steeper learning curve than Photoshop, but also free.

Made that using GIMP  ;) It's great once you get the hang of it.

I have GIMP, but I find the process to fiddily. The stupid bit where the tools are seperare to the goddamn application really don't help.

Seriously. Such a stupid idea.

Well to be fair some versions of Photoshop have exactly the same setup.

You can change the layout somewhere in the top bar, but I don't remember how   :hmpf:

Nurd: So basically you want the application to do everything itself, with no creative input from you whatsoever?

I for one hope you never find such a tool.

The Gimp's interface is a bit awkward compared to photoshop; in my experience interface design is the weak point of the open-source community in general. Sil's right, though, once you get used to it's quirks it's not so bad.

Nurdy: an interesting idea; not sure how big a market there would be, though, as most people making web comics and such know how to use either photoshop or the gimp.

No. I want an application to choose a selection of speech bubbles, not the content inside. Without the process of having to cobble together something crude while constantly fiddling with several layers.

Not to mention having to repeat this process two or three fucking times.

I just want a type of wrench for the job, not a robot to do the whole goddamn job.

If there was an application for that, what would be the point of doing webcomics at all?

I'm willing to do everything else.

Click for bigness, whipped up faster than Shows Photoshop too!  :p

I found GIMPShop to be terrible, but Paint.NET is really good, although you have to have the .NET 2.0 framework for it (I had it already for ATI Control Panel).

Man, poor you. you have a brilliant idea, and there's not a program that will let you implement that idea in 30 seconds without doing any work whatsoever? What a tragedy; someone should write an epic poem about you.

Seriously, if it's not worth the time to do it in the Gimp, it's probably not an idea worth doing at all. I don't think allowing any schmuck with an idea to implement it and subject everyone on the internet to it in 60 seconds or less would be a good thing, there's enough crappy amature photoshoppers out there already.

Stereo question, not computer
Might as well be the general tech questions thread, since we don't have one.

So I've got a nice 5.1 digital surround stereo system.  It has one of those nifty little digital optical  cable ports.  Currently I have my X-Box hooked up to it (which makes a world of difference with the Dolby Digital surround sound, let me tell you).  Thing is, I've got FFXII coming out for the PS2 today, and the PS2 also has a digital optical sound port.

My question is, is there some sort of adaptor I can buy that will let me plug both consoles in, or am I going to have to switch out?

Grrr, new CD/DVD drive problems!

The thing is all set up correctly, it opens and closes and the light shows. All good.

But, the damn PC won't recognise it has this new drive. Bad. Very very bad!

Somebody please help!

EDIT: Apparently, Master wouldn't work so it's on Slave...

Hmmm... neither LimeWire and Kazaa do what they're supposed to. LimeWire searches and all, and I can put stuff on my download list, but even four-star files don't start downloading, even after several hours. Kazaa just plainly refuses to connect. Firewalls shouldn't be a problem with any of these programs, but I tried disabling it anyways, to no avail. Shittles.

Update your server supernodes with the KaZuperNodes program?
Works for my Kazaa Lite Resurrection v0.0.8 anyway (and it comes with it), never used Limewire.
