Exhumed aren't even funny.  I have a bunch of their old 7"s from when they were just a shit local band playing in a public library, and I can't even look at the covers.  The only good thing they put out was the split 7" with Pale Existence, and that's only good because of Pale Existence.  Gore metal is just dumb.

I think they sound okay, even though they could use a drummer who can actually keep up with them.

avril and good charlotte are pop indeed.

in general...i love rock, alternative and punk but..
i love different kinds of it:
alternative - failure, year of the rabbit, slut.
alternative rock - deftones, linkin park, the masr volta
indie - at the drive in, pretty girls make graves
rock - a perfect circle, tool, denali, lostprophets, hoobastank, saves the day, incubus, burning airlines
geek rock - north of america, the plan
gothic rock - nine inch nails, evanescence
hardcore: the dillinger escape plan, shikari
punk: deviates, raised fist, offspring, NOFX
some electronic music is good too.
it's not a full list i'm far too lazy to put down all the bands i like    :p

i wish i was a little more open with different genres, i used to be all about punk rock, rancid, bouncing souls, nofx. but later i just switched over to ska. theres some bands i like outta nowhere like prodigy, and once in a while reggae is cool, but i still cant/dont want to like heavy metal and pop punk

Woo!

I'm too lazy to post a list of all the bands I listen to, especially in a thread that's doomed, so I'll just name a few important ones:
At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta, North of America, The Plan, Shellac, Q and not U, Blackmail, Dillinger Escape Plan, Shikari, Drive Like Jehu, Tomte, mclusky, Orchid, Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World.

Generally, I like all sorts and combinations of math-rock, noise-rock, hardcore, alternative, jazz and whatever.

PS: Margie, neither The Plan nor North of America are geek-rock (if there is such a genre). Just call them alternative if you have to work with genres already, they both blend lots of different genres into another.

Oh, and Evanescence are, just for the record, not gothic-rock. They're awful (that means pop). And calling Linkin Park "alternative" is like raping the whole independent scene. They are fucking mainstream-pop.

Evanecsence is gothic rock. Being popular might make them qualify as pop music, but it doesn't make them un-gothic rock.

That's right. The lack of goth makes them un-gothic.
Du you know what real goth is? Look at this quite comprehensive history of goth.
But I actually like Evanescence, I just don't fall for their goth image. Tattered black clithing and eyeliner makes no goth.

i looked at that site and it said

"There is also a fair bit of "ambient" goth, characterised by subtle instrumentation and haunting female vocals.

Lyrically, goth tends to be on the doomy side- dark lyrics and a doomy sound are fairly typical of most (but not all) goth these days."

Sounds like Evanescence to me.

@Marg: That's a lot more accurate.
@Venus: If you want to know what gothic music really is, then check out the bands that are mentioned. Then you'll notice, that Evenescence hasn't really got a gothic "feel". It's got a nu-metal-ish feel with a few (minor) gothic elements to juice it up.
Also, do you then consider Marilyn Manson truly gothic?

i don't listen to marilyn manson, so i really couldn't tell you. the song he has on the queen of the damned soundtract sounded rock to me.

In any case, goth, nu-goth, as long as it has 'goth' in the title, in my universe it counts.

Hmmm... just like pop-punk is true punk? I beg to differ.
And no- Manson isn't goth. Glam/semi-industrial is his style. He has gothic influences, and a part of his visual style is also quite goth-like. (just to clear it up a little)
