I think they should be banned, but can you imagine them trying to do that? It would be impossible...

The search buttom has been removed, hopefully it will return in the not to distant future though.

More people are getting shot in the UK since the ban on hand guns was introduced than before. Making them illegal just made them a bigger status symbol for criminals.

Seriously though.  I hate it when people shoot people, but let's face it, whether they ban guns or not people are still going to shoot people.  The world is doomed.  It's hopeless.

I'm sure Mango meant it metaphorically...okay, maybe she didn't - I don't know. But I do see her point. Basically the world is doomed since humans still come with that design flaw that states that some of them will just insist on killing each other and other living creatures in this planet regardless. Guns are exactly the same as atomic arms or WMDs - they are designed to kill other things. If you really want something to hang over your mantelpiece, get a painting.
Also, the arguement to keep guns to defend people is exactly the same arguement as having nuke programs. The only difference is that nukes can kill more people in one shot - but it's just like multiplying the man with a gun to a country-sized scale.

Yeah, there are some nasty pieces of work about, unfortunately. Still, I wouldn't say the lunatics have completely taken over the asylum yet. Maybe next year...

Guns don't kill people; bullets do. Let's ban bullets. Or, as Chris Rock suggested, make each bullet cost $5000. That way, people would think twice before shooting somebody, and there would be no "innocent bystanders".

If you make each bullet cost $5000, the end result is a black market in cheap bullets.

If you wanted to do something with a gun (kill, rob) you'll do the same with a huge knife or a shiv. Guns are more convinet (sp) and easier to conceal. Otherwise, i'd use a knife. People will find a way to accomplish their goals, regardless of what the government says.

yes people could still use knifes or shivs or whatever, but it's a lot easier to run from a knife then a spray of bullets. A guy with a knife could not highjack my car, but a guy with a gun sure could.

Just so long as you could run away.  I was reading about a string of robberies of pregnant women, but the idea applies to any of us non-sprinter types.  If I can't get away from a situaton (and the most important element of self-defense is avoision) I am going to fight.  There are those who say that my money isn't worth more than my life, but there is more at stake than the measly amounts of cash in my wallet.  To grab my ankles for the very lowest scum this world has to offer is to sacrifice not only my own dignity and self-respect, it is to surrender, by proxy, the notion that people are strong, self-sufficient individuals who do not rely on the government for their protection.  It is to offer as fact that human decency cannot triumph over human failing.

At any rate, gun legislation has a few fatal (no pun intended) flaws.  Guns should be banned because people are generally bad and can't be trusted, but people will obey the laws because they are generally good and can be trusted.

That's because every single citizen is militarily trained between the ages of 18 and 26. So you'd expect them to be a little more careful and more adept with their guns.

Also, you don't want a vigilante force taking over. That almost always leads to wanton force. I've seen gruesome examples in some South American villages, in countries where there's 1 policeman for every 5,000 people.

i think guns shoudldn't be banned.

if guns were banned, ONLY criminals would have them. i think it would be better if some people who weren't criminals could had them, so that in an encounter with a criminal, they could defend themselves.
