Hey there!! I just started reading the hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy, and it's so cool!!! I'm on the second book in the series. My favourite character is Marvin so far. Are there any other fans of this and Red Dwarf?

Also, does anyone else reckon that the restaurant in AMAZONIAN WOMEN IN THE MOOD is a parody of the Restaurant at the end of the Universe? :) :)

When I was at school my nickname was Marvin. Can’t imagine why...

Hey, I always identified with Arthur Dent some what, but if I could have been anybody, it would have been Ford Prefect.

I've already got the towel waiting, now if I could only hitch a ride.

I love it... I always listen to it on tape... I think it was read by the guy that did Marvin on the show; he seems perfect to read it anyways.
What's 6 x 7?

Check out the radio dramas, the origonal source of the books. The books diverge from them after the third one. Very funny reads. The guy who does the voice for Marvin is great.

Hitchhikers rocks. I love the idea of falling and not hitting the floor (i think thats in the same book as arajag, love him too).

Cube_166: Isn't it Agrajag? I don't know for sure; it's been three years since I read the books

Also, everyone, check out the TV series, now available on DVD in both the US and UK.

Everyone loves Marvin, but personally, he kinda bugs me. I love Ford, cause he's just so crazy, and his lack of sarcastic grasping skills are funny to me.

Those books are the greatest. Douglas Adams should live on in author legend.

Yeah, Agrajag was great. Ford Prefect is also a wonderful character, all the way up to the very end of Mostly Harmless. I think I relate to Arthur Dent best of anyone (despite gender-differences and all) because he is thrust into the situations without having a clue... kind of like my life...

Kind of like Futurama, too. Weird that Futurama never really parodied the Hitchhiker's Guide in any episodes, or so I think.

Some parallels can be made. Zap=Zaphod, Marvin=Bender especially, in my opinion.

I liked Mostly Harmless, I made it my email. I don't see why a lot of people don't enjoy it as much as the other books. I thought it was a pretty fine addition.

I phrased it wrong up there, I did like it. I meant 'all the way to the very end' and not 'except for in Mostly Harmless'. Oops.

Who would Trillian be? Kif's HGTTG counterpart? Hehe. But I think Fry is somewhere between being Ford and being Arthur...

Trillian would be more of a Leela-Kif crossbreed. Sexy and intelligent like Leela, but inexplicably saddled with an egomaniac like Kif.

Ford is probably my favorite character, either that or zaphod, you just gotta like a guy with two heads that doesn't give a damn about anything...

I always identified with Zaphod. I mean, he's got two heads and on a Saturday Morning it feels like I have two, and they both hurt.

He and I have roughly the same ideas when it comes to alcohol (although I draw the line at Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters).

We are both clever in some ways, moronic in others.

Neither of us give a damn about much, but then again, neither of us have ever come across anything worth giving a damn about. Except the Biro Planet.

Plus, Zaphod happens to be an expert at fucking things up, like me.

So I always identified with him, and felt that he deserved better than he got. Even when he was being treated nicely (very infrequently).

I always hated Trillian. Especially in the TV version.

Lastly, I want to hang around with a few Vogons, they intrigue me.

I liked Mostly Harmless better than either So Long, etc... or Life, The Universe And Everything. The only thing missing was Zaphod. :p

It intrigued me to read in his biography (by Neil Gaiman) that douglas Adams never liked hi own work. One reason that every version of HGTTG is different is because Adams was always changing it and adding something different. Never satisfied with his own work, and never played to the fans (which is why Zaphod doesn't appear in the last few books). But the Hitchikers books are still great, and Adams did much more for sci-fi and comedy then a lot he's given credit for (Hitchhikers was made before Star Wars, remember).

i'm a huge fan of the whole series. i've read all 5 books i don't know how often, both in german and english.
i guess my favorite character(s) would be the combination of doors in the heart of gold and marvin - only in this situation you can enjoy marvin at its finest.
also, the ravenous bugblatter beast of traal and vogon peotry are awesome. :p

douglas adams was a genius, and thus i recommend every fan of the hitchhiker series to read other books by him as well.

Every read Salmon of Doubt, anyone?

It's not really any specific sort of book, just the contents of his Mac's taken when he died. A lot of it is small articles he wrote for various things, stuff about how much he loves the Beatles, a chapter of a story called "Young Zaphod Plays it Safe" and the first few chapters of a new Dirk Gently. I recall reading that the Dirk Gently didn't get finished because he had a suspicion that it was supposed to be a HH book.

Anyway, its a fun but depressing read because many of the storys will never be finished.

I've read it. I like the way it's done, but I agree it's depressing because you know he'll never finish it, and nobody else in the world could do a good enough job if they tried.

i've read salmon of doubt and i liked it a lot. yeah, it's a bit depressing, but actually i still enjoyed, just because the stuff he wrote is so damn funny.
especially the stuff about computers.

what i also really liked about the book were the articles about atheism and/or faith in general. even though they weren't funny they were fascinating to read.

I like the quote:
"If I weren't an atheist, I'd be Catholic, because the world would have to be created by and Italian."

I think it was in the story about the rays versus machines in underwater travel.

Yay! I'm helping :).

Seriously though I'm a bit of a Hitchikers fan (how did I miss this thread for so long) but I have read all the books so many times that I realy can't bear to read it all again. One day I'll be sure to pick it up again.

Also anyone who has not heard the radio series, check it out. It's well funny and contains lots of new (er...old) stuff over the books

Some of the cast has been announced for the Hitchkiker film:

Arthur Dent - Martin Freeman (Tim from "The Office" ):

Ford Prefect - A guy called Mos Def?? I'm not sure about this guy (black? non-red hair?)!!
Here's what Imdb has to offer:

Zaphod Beeblebrox - Sam Rockwell (looks about right!).

Trillian - Zooey Deschanel (she's kinda freakishy beautiful!)

Slartibartfast - Bill Nighy (Billy Mack!! or that dude from Still Crazy!! Awesome.)

Edited to get pics working.

Down on IMDB as Garth Jennings, of "Hammer & Tongs" fame - music vid director.

That said, some films directed by ex-music video guys can be really good (think Spike Jonse).

Then again, IMDB does have Warwick Davis down as Marvin (that's Warwick Davis the Ewok) - he maybe the actual guy in the suit, but not the voice.

Duh!
: :points to user name::
In Young Zaphod Plays IT Safe who are the guys who have escaped? I read an omnibus edition of THHGTTG five times without YZPIS. And after I read it, I cannot remember if these guys might be a reference to something in the HHGTTG.

I think my favourite moment is (after reading the omnibus edition) to read The Private Life of Genghis Khan, The ending... :laff:

I wrote my senior paper about Mostly Harmless. I elaborated on the satirical points of the entire five-novel trilogy and then went specifically into the view DNA has upon the universe and things in general. This second part was based on Mostly Harmless and some of his novels and articles (especially those for MacWorld).
DNA should still be alive.

Ford is all wrong in that movie. Especially since he's actually described quite well in the book. At least well enough to give everyone a personal mental image of him.
...and he's called Spike Jonze.

Jay Roach recently told Popcorn that he would also like to see Jim Carrey play Zaphod Beeblebrox, the wacky two-headed politician.
Jay Roach is out, and Sam has been cast, so it ain't gonna happen.
