Have a baffling computer-related question? Post it here!

My computer has been running sweetly for the past few months, so I have no complaints.

Lol, good title

Heres a question. Has anyone hears of Aston Shell?

IM thinking of running it but im afraid about It taking up too much system resources and security of course. Does anyone else run shells? The main reason i am worried is because  heard to close the holes you have to fix it so its difficult to delete.

A shell such as Aston Shell for Windows does tax system resources. This is because unlike UNIX or OS X, Windows does not divert tasks such as minimisation animations to the GPU (video card). If you have a fast video card however, you should still notice a slight improvement in performance. If you're a speed freak / overclocker you'd be best to avoid shells. Processor speed shouldn't pose a problem, but if you only use 128mb of Ram, I think you should upgrade.

Most shells do not affect system security, provided your version of Windows is up to date. This is because many shells "sit" on top of the original desktop. However, Aston Shell appears to affect the security of the system. I noticed that there is a "restricted" version available that fixes most of the holes - see the website for details.

I've had no problems in the past with replacement shells, so my advice to go ahead...

I only have 128meg of ram, and no vid card. Everything on a computer affects its accesebility. Just more holes that have to be plugged, not that windows is much safer.
The restricted version simply plugs the holes for you, but they also have instructions.
And would it be possible to use this with Linux?

Short answer, no. If you could, I'd probably be using it right now.

It's a matter of personal preference, but KDE 3.1 is very sexxay.

KDE is functional . . . . . usually.  I certainly wouldn't call it sexxy though.  (Or is 3.1 way sexxier than 3.0?)

This is Linux we're talking about here. It's not exactly developed and used by people who are in it for the eye candy.
And yeah, KDE 3.1 is sexxier than 3.0.

I like Enlightenment as a linux GUI.

Edit: Says me while I sit installing Windows on a friend's old P2 266 with 32MB RAM (in 2 SIMMs somehow). I'm getting paid, so whatever.

XP should have a utility to network them together without any network components other than some patch cable.

enlightenment is probably the best-looking linux-gui.
although in my opinion, gnome 2.2.x comes close nowadays. that is, untill e17 will be released. (check the e17 screenshots. whoa...)

i'm still using fluxbox though... but i might convert to gnome soon.

I got a stumper:

About a year ago, my hard drive died. I replaced the drive and everything works fine now. But, I recently installed a couple games on my machine, and I've run into a few problems. The install fine, but when I load them up, they run OK for about 30 or seconds, and then freeze the machine up completely.  I end up having to manually cut power to the system to even get my machine to reboot. When I had my earlier HD, the games ran fine and I never had a problem. I'm running Windows 98 SE, and have an Nvidia TNT Ultra II video card. I've tried everything, uninstalling and reinstalling the games, updating my video drivers, etc, and nothing has worked yet.

Also, just a few days ago, I tried to install System Shock 2 on my machine. The install went fine and the game loaded up, until it suddenly just shut down and shot me out to my desktop. I tried running it again, and I got a "your video card doesn't support this game," which is rubbish, since I've had the game for a few years now and have never before run into any troubles.

Oh, PS, all the games I own are originals, bought from the store, no copies.

Does this only happen when you play video games? It could be a DirectX issue - if the games you're playing are quite old, they might be having problems with the version of DirectX you have (I'm assuming you have the latest version). ..

If you're talking about the text size on PEEL getting huge, you can change it back to wherever it was (probably medium) by going into:
Menu>View>Text Size>*whatever size you choose*

I'm assuming you're using IE, here.

I'm guessing that MSN Explorer uses the IE API, so it might work if you change it in IE (or it might not  :( )

OK, with the DirectX thing, how would I got about fixing that. I am pretty sure that I have the most recent version, is there a way I can just go about downgrading my current version?

No, asianlightning. And why would you want to?

To check your DirectX version, click Start*Run...
Type:
     dxdiag
Press Enter

The newest version of DirectX is available from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A19BED22-0B25-4E5D-A584-6389D8A3DAD0&displaylang=en

Well, earlier postings suggested that perhaps by having a version of DirectX that is too high, some of my older PC games are freezing up as a result.

Well, it's a good job there's the DirectX Eradicator ...I'd reinstall the version of DirectX you know your games worked with...and if that doesn't work I'm stumped...

ive made a deal with the devil so my install of win98 has made it unscathed through 5 LAN parties and a chassis change (and a massive component switch) without having to re-install.

and can you imagine, all he wanted was something i have in my shoe..
