I thought we should have a thread for the musicians on PEEL:

Are you musically inclined?
If so, what instrument do you play?
Who are your major influences, and how have they influenced your style of play?
Got any advice for people wanting to start a band?

I've been a drummer for over 10 years, and I've been playing in bands on the local circuit for the past three or four.  My first band was a prog-rock band called Artichoke Attack and we played Porcupine Tree, Marilyn Manson and Pink Floyd covers in our set.  The bands I'm in now, I've been in for almost two years.

The major influence in my style of play is Abe Cunningham from Deftones, he's the drummer I play like the most - and I absorbed his influence without really noticing.  I've swiped drums parts from Neil Peart (Rush), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and Lars Ulrich (Metallica).

Good name.  I wouldn't worry too much about lack of vocal style, you can develop one.  As you've heard one of our bands, the singer can't really sing that well - and we get away with it.  I'd say, go for it, if you can find a bunch of like-minded people who are willing to give it a go with you, there's nothing stopping you.

I'd recommend playing in a band, as it's an absolute blast.  You meet loads of cool people, and there's nothing like having a crowd rocking-out to your music - infinately better than any artificial high.

I play the trumpet.

My style is influenced by what's on the page.  I can't improv to save my life.  Too many things to do at once, m'thinks.  I adore playing classic jazz, like Benny Goodman's Sing Sing Sing and Glen Miller's In the Mood.

I have no musical aptitude, but that doesn't stop me from making guitar-noise with my guitar-instrument.

I've been playing the guitar for almost twenty years now.  I have been building guitars for over three years.  My first band was an Anarchist/Crust punk band called the Karnivourous Raunch F.U.X.   :laff: I played bass.

I played my first live show in an after hours bar (Boozecan) called the What? Gallery on March 7th 1992.  I've never been without a band since.  Other bands I've been in include, 5 Against 1 (Melodic punk) The Insipids (Drunken Hard Rock with punk/metal/country/blues influences?!?!) Off Day (A kind of joke side project aimed to make fun of The Offspring and Green Day)  I'm currently in yet another punk band called Aging Youth Gang.  I've been playing with them since 1996.  Other bands I've been involved with as a session musician or temporay fill in include, The Four Foodgroups of the Apocalypse, The Torture Animals, The Zen Rednecks and Chick Magnets.

My personal musical influences have nothing to do with the music I play in my bands.  Although there is of course some parallels.  In AYG along with our original material we cover such old schoolers as, The Clash, Ramones, Stranglers, Buzzcocks, Alley Cats, Stiff Little Fingers and DEVO.

My live rig includes:

Gibson Les Paul Standard
Gibson Les Paul Classic
Marshall JMP MK.II 100 Watt head
Marshall 1960B 4X12 Speaker Enclosure.

The Four Foodgroups Of The Apocalypse is a wicked name for a band!

I play regularly in three bands, and here are three tracks (one by each), which I've posted for your enjoyment.

1) Red:Shift - Servant
The main band, we've toured the UK (and been seen by a few PEELers), and played some big gigs.  This track is one of my favourites, and I sing on this one too (the harmony in the chorus).

2) Nerve Harvest - Dead Priest Day
Playing in NH can be tough, as it's different to the other two bands.  I'm playing along with a sequenced backing track which is tough if you're not on it, and you cannot break away from it either.  I still manage to cut loose though.  This track is recorded live at a gig we played last year.

3) Ryan Shirlow & The Bloody Marys - D-Flowered
The funnest band I'm in.  Every gig I've played with The BM's has been fanstastic.  This song is always great to play, as we have a posse of people who always sing along to it.  It's a classic infidelity song - based on a true story, I believe.

My drum set up is:

Tama Drums and Pearl Powershifter Double-Bass Pedals. My cymbals are: Rogers 14" Hi-hats, Sabian 6" splash, Sabian 14" crash, Sabian 16" crash, Zildjian 18" crash, Zildjian 19" crash, Sabian 20" chinese, Pearl 22" ride.

I've played brass instruments since the fifth grade.  I've spent the most time learning the trombone for jazz, concert, and marching band (although I was Drum Major my senior year).  In my switches from coronet to trumpet (big switch) to euphonium to baritone (another huge switch) to trombone, I've raised a slew of instruments to my embouchure.  My favorite was a silver C.C. Conn that was given to me by grandfather who played it seven decades earlier.  The scroll work on the horn's bell was unlike any I'd ever seen before, the case was nearly disintegrated, and the silver finish was worn down to the brass in a few areas, but there was never a horn as beautiful as it was.  I played that horn until one of the support beams broke.  I then started playing a not-so-old Conn I got from one of my older cousins.  That's the horn I still play, and by "still play", I mean it was the last horn I played.

I haven't written much music, but I have arranged a great deal for trombone choir, jazz band, marching band, and pep band.  My greatest arranging accomplishments include Pachelbel's Canon in D for trombone choir (which won an award at Solo and Ensemble competition but was later grounds for disqualification since there wasn't an original score, as I had scored it by ear) and the senior farewell song for marching band (my first 'commission' piece).  The best song I've actually written was my "Theme from PONG: The movie, which actually utilized strings (something I hadn't needed to do for previous arrangements).

I have an African drum and a drum set (a 1960s Pearl with  Glitter look ... *tries to remember* 22'' Ziljian K-Ride, Sabian  HH Hihats, etc...).
Also (in my Opinion  :p) I can sing well good.
That's all ... any advice for starting a band?
Where to find the band members? What instruments are needed? Other technical things? Where/When/What/Who ...
My idea is to play a lot 1960s like music with the band. For exampel Beat, Bubblegum Bands, a little from the Beatles of course, etc...
Any advice is welcome.

Advice for people starting a band?

First check local advertising, if you're looking for like minding people to form a band, there may be people out there looking for you.  If there aren't, then place an ad yourself.  Usually in musical instrument shops there is a notice board for people looking for musicians.

Both of the first bands I joined, I answered ad's looking for a drummer, so I didn't know the people I would be playing with.  This is the message board for the local music venue in my town.

Secondly, there should be somewhere to practice and somewhere to play.  A bar usually can put on music and have bands play.  You'll have to look.

Thirdly, hook-up with other bands.  There's never any use for being competative, it's always cool to get to know people in other bands around, then you have a 'scene'.  York's local scene is based around 'Fibbers' which is the first local venue to play, there are others, but Fibbs is the only one with a house PA.

Finally, play gigs - as often as you can, they're great fun.

Now,

My first gig was with Artichoke Attack, at Wentworth College in York University, and I was petrified.  In that gig was a band called The Following which was fronted by an insane Irishman called Ryan Shirlow, I didn't know him then, and were great friends now. Funny that.

I've been playing "air drums" for almost 30 years, took up the real thing two years ago.  When I get the chance I practice on a Tama Rockstar 7 piece kit.  I have all Sabian pro series cymbals: 14" hi hats, 16" crash, 18" crash/ride, 20" ride.  I usually use "sound off" mufflers when playing at home, so as to not drive the wife and kids to plotting murder.

I typically play classic rock, and some jazz.  I'm definitely not ready fro prime-time yet, but I'm having fun.

I'm clasically trained to Diploma level (DipABRSM) on piano and flute, and play to an average standard on sax, guitar (and elec. bass), and drums.

I also play jazz piano, and frequently gig with a big band or my trio around the Bristol area. I occasionaly gig as a jazz soloist. I'm heavily into synths / music technology, and so own a varied collection of keyboards, synths and pickups. I work freelance as a live sound engineer, which took me into the lighting design / operation stuff I do now. Equipment wise I prefer to work with a Soundcraft FX16 mixer, or any other comparable PA system.

Although I haven't played in a rock band for five years, it was 'a laugh' and I got to meet loads of really interesting people - you don't have to have bucket loads of talent, you just need that 'passion' to keep going at it.

I plau the drums aswell, have done for nearly two years. I started because a friend needed someone to play drums on a GCSE piece he was doing. His first choice let him down so I had to learn two songs (Blink 182 no less, which is friggin hard) in three weeks. We sucked. I am still in a band with that same person to this date, but I fear not for much longer.

My reasons for wanting to leave are:
He's going off to uni and our bass player now lived in London. Having practices will be damn near impossible
We haven't played any proper gigs out of his school yet and he has very restrictive parents who won't let him go out while he studies for exams.
He has become an annoying left-wing activist.  ;)

I enjoy playing in a band, but one where practices happen, and don't revolve around trying to get a crappy demo recorded using 3 MiniDisc players and headphones.

i play the drums and recently i've been trying to learn bass (emphasis on trying).
and yes, i also play in a band i founded with some friends of mine. in the band i play drums, bass and i also sing. of course, all at the same time.
nah, just kidding, we swap instruments, depending on who is singing and/or who wrote the song.
influence-wise i'ld say just because it's my favourite band i'ld have to go with tony from at the drive-in (being their drummer), but in terms of song-writing i'm more influenced by bands like north of america, mclusky, sparta or jimmy eat world (i'ld like to write a song in the area of at the drive-in once, but they are just too damned good).
before anyone asks: yes we have recorded some stuff, no, we don't want to release it yet, mainly because none of the songs are finished yet. and we don't want to start playing covers.

When I was younger I used to play the violin. I played it for 4 years and got pretty good at it.
I wasn't as good as the Robot Devil or anything but still I could get a decent tune out of it. I started playing when I was 8 so I was an early starter. I quit when I got to high school but thinking about it now I should have carried it on. I enjoyed it  :)
If someone handed me a violin now I'd have no idea where to start and couldn't get a single tune out of it  ;)

When I was 8 I started to have guitar lessons at first school. Then the music teacher left, and then I left for middle school. I have no idea why I stopped learning - I think it was because music lessons were expensive at my new school. I would love to learn how to play it again, but I'd also like to learn how to play the drums.

I play the trumpet, keyboard/synth and just started guitar. I have to play trumpet for band, and it's fairly decent, but it's a beautiful instrument. I don't truly know how to play keyboard, but if you give me the keys, I can memorize them like that (*snaps fingers*). Guitar I'm a little shaky on, but it's coming along nicely. Practice makes perfect.
They Might Be Giants, Man or Astroman?, and Polaris has affected my music into an alternative rock which has the essence of all the other music genres (The real ones. No rap, pop or hiphop), and combines them to make a weird song, different from all the others. I tell you one thing, my songs will never sound the same, *cough*Blink182*cough. I currently have made five songs, not written, but implanted in my head, and am searching for some band mates.

Even making a song about huggbees?

I learned by ear at first, but lessons taught me techniques that helped with even the stuff I could already do. It just meant I could do it better. eg. I can now play Monkey Wrench - just!

Since I bought Relationship of Command today I think I'll chart One Armed Scissor aswell. It won't be spot on, but what the hey.

Another reason to play drums - you can lose an entire band after some practice... eg. Start playing at 150bpm, then create your own beat within the beat by playing every 1 and a half notes, so it sounds like you have slowed down to 100bpm, except you haven't. Wait for everyone to catch up, throw in a really syncopated fill, then go back to 150bpm. So enjoyable.

Despite only having one lesson, I've got drum instruction stuff, and practice a lot.  Which I would always advise you do.

I'm currently trying to develop my double-bass playing skills (which, at the moment is relatively non-existant).

Speeding up and slowing down is fun, and in my early days of playing I could lose the band easily.

I'm crap at time signatures as I play by ear, most of The Bloody Mary's stuff is in 6/8 - I can tell you that much.  If I listen to a song I can have it down pretty much in a few go-through's, so playing stuff is not a problem.

I have played bass for the past five years (since I was thirteen) and started out playing classic rock stuff like Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Whitesnake. Over the past couple of years I've moved to modern prog stuff like Dream Theater and Spock's Beard. I also play guitar but not quite as well as bass, and I had piano lessons when I was 8 but gave up after a couple of years.

I try not to be influenced too much by other musicians as I don't want to end up just copying them, but there are several whom I look up to. These include bassist Mike Porcaro (Toto), John Myung (Dream Theater), Sting and guitarists Steve Lukather (Toto), Steve Vai and Roine Stolt (Flower Kings).

At the moment I play bass and do some 'singing' (depending on where you're standing  :laff: ) in a rock covers band called the Ladykillers ;), and I play bass in an experimental art rock band called Evil Dick and the Banned Members (very Zappa influenced-  http://www.polemicmusic.com/bannedmems.html ). I will also be playing some gigs this summer with my Dad and my brother under the banner of Cold Sweat, mainly rhythm and blues stuff. I get to play guitar at those   :D

And my kit consists of:
Yamaha BBG 5 string
Washburn Mercury Series 4 string
Zoom BFX 708
Techsystems 200 Watt Amp
Burns Marquee (Needs a humbucker)
Korg AX1500G

I really need to upgrade my kit but I am living on my student loan...

I was a tromboner from 5th grade on through to high school where I played in the marching, concert, and jazz bands.  I haven't played it since I left high school many moons ago.

I started playing guitar my sophomore year in high school, mostly teaching myself.  Got into a band with some friends my junior year in college.  I was somewhat bored of guitar (and none of them would give up their egos  :p), so I switched to playing bass.  First we were called Six, then Kelli Green when we had a member change.  We played out at local clubs about 2-3 times a month.  Did that from '96 until '98 when the band fizzled out due to the usuall silly things that happen between bandmates. Late last year we started playing together again for fun and to record stuff.

The only equipment I have now is my full bodied Yamaha acoustic (much better sound IMO than thin profile acoustics) and a Fender Squire Jazz Bass.

This one is Archie's favourite.  It's ripped at 96kbps because I'd rather you bought the CD (when it's done).    ;)

The difference from recording (previous EP's) on your own, and recording at a proper studio is glaring.
