Comparing bands is like comparing films, impossible. Therefore all that can be done is stating their opinion that this or that band is the greatest and hope to recieve some agreement...

yep, you state your opinion and if other people agree/disagree they will say. otherwise they will ignore it.

I like: U2, Matchbox 20 and other similar bands.

Weezer are alright, they have some good songs but are a bit boring.
Gorillaz are so tedious!
And as for Jeremy's music taste... well i wont talk about that!

okay....

first and foremost of course at the drive-in, the best band ever.
then mars volta, sparta, north of america, kurt, fugazi, jimmy eat world, foo fighters, nirvana, tenacious d, pale, pilot to gunner, shellac, weezer, beatles, ...and you will know us by the trail of dead, mclusky, tool, rage against the machine, the cancer conspiracy, godspeed you! black emperor, sigur ròs, raised fist, turbonegro, the moldy peaches, arab on radar, flying luttenbachers, nofx, anti-flag, A and lots of others, but i'm too lazy to name them now.
as you can see, my preferences are mostly hard/emocore, noise/math-rock and alternative.

and to start a little flamewar: good charlotte is just pop-"punk". note how i put the word punk in quotation marks - they're damn far away from being punk. their music isn't creative and they aren't very skilled musicians either.

Some bands I like:
Phish. Hippie music. Same fanbase as Grateful Dead.

Dave Matthews Band I don't care what you think of them, there's talent there and some fine songs.

Outhouse Loud angry music, by a band you probably haven't heard of. Very good though. I recommend you buy their cd, it's entitled Welcome.

Newsboys old school Christian Rock. Not as old-school as U2, but The Newsboys have been around for several years.

Jars of Clay More oldish Christian Rock.

several techno artists including but not limited to Crystal Method, Moby, Gigi D'Agostino

video game music from Metal Gear Solid, Crono Trigger, Earthbound, and many many other games.

Guster newer band, some rock, some pop, many songs are quite melodic. Good cds, good prices, go buy one. I recommend Lost And Gone Forever.

To put my five cents into a discussion.

Most of all, I respect well-made and big lyrics.
Something like this part:

Taken the long way
dark realms I went through
I arrived
my vision's so clear
in anger and pain
I left deep wounds behind
but I arrived
truth might be changed by victory

Beyond the void but deep within me
a swamp of filth exists
a lake it was of crystal beauty
but Arda's spring went by
I've heard the warning
well curse my name
I'll keep on laughing
no regret
no regret

Don't fear the eyes of the dark lord
Morgoth I cried
all hope is gone but I swear revenge
it's my oath
I will take part in your damned fate

All other texts  - short and repeated for many times – don’t get respect from me.
Although there are good compositions which deserve attention, most of such songs are just songs “for on day”. They never touch you deeply.

Why? It could be taken to the music thread, but as we have all found out any attempot at discussion in there is futile as it gets drowned out by what I would class as nothing more than spam, but since it isn't spam in the official sense, it is legit. I would say this thread has more substance to it than any of the general music threads or the test threads. That's my opinion. Your opinion is that this thread sucks, but if you can't logigate a reason furthur than your own personal opinion, closing it seems pretty insensitive and power-crazy. Watch out people the Third Reich is coming.  :p <-- Just so you can tell I wasn't 100% serious.

I have a very wide ranging taste in music, so I'll list what I can not listen to under any circumstances: Garage, the worst music ever made, barely classes as music; Slow sappy pop, ugh, horrid, all identikit songs, and why is it always the boy who has done wrong, go find yourself some slag and sleep with her instead of chasing the impossible dream of this perfect woman who probably has a fetish for cats and tuna  :evillaugh:, Some Classical, I really can't stand the sound of violins.

okay, in that case...

in my opinion, music should be complicated - it should make you think, and not just because of the lyrics. or it should create some sorta emotion. that's why i don't like your everyday-pop.
and that's why i like bands like at the drive-in or mars volta - because of complicated song structures and lyrics. that's no background-music. and north of america or mclusky - complicated rhythms, dischordal melodies and the lack of harmony in the usual sense.
or raised fist and similar stuff - that music makes you wanna trash your whole room, it's pure aggression turned into music.

of course i also listen to more normal rock (like jimmy eat world or sparta), but even those bands have some noisy elements (listen for example to your new aestethic by jimmy eat world or red alibi by sparta and you know what i mean).

I have to disagree on this. There are many "simple" "pop" songs that I really like. There's nothing wrong with fun bubble-gum music as long as it's done right. I like the Basement Jaxx and Daft Punk, two techno "pop" bands. The Hives do great Rolling Stones-style fun songs. Just because something's simple doesn't make it bad. It's just different. As long as it presents itself as fun, then I have no problem with it.

What I do have a problem with is bands that say they're one thing but do another. Avril Lavigne nor Good Charlotte is "punk" (but "punk" was always a hard term to define, anyways). The Vines aren't "the next Nirvana." They're "the next Silverchair." Slipknot and those 'nu-metal' bands say they're dangerous but they're just boring and derivitive.

On the other hand, though, I do like complicated math rock like Tool, Radiohead, Clinic, Sigur Ros, and the like. I enjoy rap, like early Eminem, The Coup, Outkast, N.E.R.D. and The Roots. I like heavy metal, I like punk, I like alternative.

In the words of The D. "It doesn't matter if it's good, it only matters if it rocks!"

okay, you are right with that. with my definition i meant the bands you mentioned in the quote below, just look at weezer, jimmy eat world or pale - that's not complicated rock, but it's good rock and it's geniune. these people actually like the stuff they're doing and most important of all, they wrote all their songs themselves. and they wouldn't change their style to sale more records. that's important to me, because in my opinion you can hear if a band actually enjoys playing their music (which is usually more often the case if the band wrote the songs themselves) or if not.

exactly. these bands don't sell their music because the music's good (it's just a good example of the genre the band is catigorized in), the music shouldn't even be creative, the main aim of the music is to be sold.

OK, now I'll chime in.  I've been into almost every genre of music.  I love rock & metal, as well as some pop music (as long as it's done well, and is fairly inventive).  I was into hip-hop in the early eighties and still like to listen to it.  I also like good electronica  (Prodigy, Fluke, Orbital, AphexTwin, Future Sound Of London), some dance music (mainly without vocals) and some non-commercial trance.

Music these days is all about recycling, it always depends on how it's recycled.  If done properly and inventively then the listener barely notices.  However, the music scene is awash with poor poor facsimiles of decent artists.

I have seen many, many bands in cocert and this is how i have come to judge bands mainly.  For example, I used to like Blink - 182.  Saw them live.... they sucked major ass.  Stopped liking Blink.  I used to just think Social Distortion was 'ok' now they are quite possibly my favorite band.  I really, really like bands that put on a good show.  The bands that I have seen that put on AWESOME shows, Social Distortion, Authority Zero, and Green Day.  Pennywise plays a GREAT Show, as do most of the bands I like, its just that other level that AZ, SD and GD take it too that make them really really good.  So thats how i judge a band really, if they can play music live and be good and energetic, they rule in my opinion.

a band that i have been listning to a lot of late is Cibo Matto. their lyrics are dream-like, and the beats melt in my mouth.
also i really like Bjork, her creativity knows no bounds and each album is a detailed glimpse into one part of her. She throws herself into her work and it enchants me.

I'd like to see Jurassic 5 in concert. And Gorillaz too, although they present in an unusual way. It's this huge video screen showing cartoons of the members playing. But it's all live. I wonder if they do get to see the real people in the concert too.

Yay Melllvar! You seem to be part of the .005% of the public that knows quality electronic music. My fave electronica artists include Astral Projection, Prodigy, Trance[]Control, and the like. I listen to pretty much anything that appeals to me.  I play punk, surf, metal and classic rock.  I've seen too many bands to list.  For me music need not be complicated, wordy, thought provoking or socially aware to be appealing.  It just has to sound good.  If you know what I mean.  I'd rather listen to the Ramones than Yngwie Malmsteen.  That being said, technicality also has it's place.  Right now, I'm listening to alot of Death and Black Metal.  Ultra Satanic stuff like Sorhin, Enochian Crescent and Thyrane.  Avantgarde stuff like Arcturus, Ulver and Ephel Duath.  Death rock like, Babylon Whores, Sentenced and Katatonia.  I also like more mainstream stuff like Bjork, Morcheeba and The Vines.  My cd collection is in excess of 600, so there's room for a little bit of everything.

"Worshipping" is a religious connotation.  Bands like Sorhin don't openly "praise" the Christian manifestation of "the devil" but rather advocate the anti-religious, anti-humanist aspects of Satanism.  Wanted God dead or alive, rather than Evil is cool, sell your soul etc. ect.  Our version of Satanism has no room for religious iconography.  It is far more pragmatic than simple good vs evil.  To me there is nothing more evil than organized religion or elevating man above any of the other animals.  We can and do root around in the shit with the best of them.  It's more anticulture than counterculture, if you catch my drift.

So in other words your music says that people are animals, organized religion sucks lollipops, etc?

I'm sort of in agreemant, about highly organized religion. Locally organized churches are better, far as I'm concerned. The more bureocracy you allow in a faith, the more opportunity for people to "pull rank" and whatnot.

But if you object to Christianity in general, then I'd like to issue a big "You're wrong", based on the good that certain Christian organizations like the Salvation Army and City Mission provide, and the good provided by missionary doctors, hiring companies to dig wells for impoverished communities, and the like. (which my church supports monetarily). The crusades might be your favorite example, but that's not only long-gone history, but an example of religion gone wrong to begin with.

So Spicy, your music's values oppose Christianity? Or just the beurocracy of Catholicism?

I most certainly object to Christianity in general. Judeo-Chritianity and Islam, I find to be the most henious offenders of intolerance and mindless "shepherding".  Keep the proles stupid and fearful, therby keeping them inline.  Meh.  This is a music thread not an idiological forum.  The percieved "good" done by SallyAnn et al is just a thin veil of pittance compared to the irreperable damage by cenuturies of crusades, inqusitions and Jihads.

In a short sentence:

Fuck God

That's all I have to say about that.
