EDIT: You know what?  I'm removing the beginning of this post so we can all forget about what I was referring to and maintain some semblance of sanity.

I have something to contribute to the topic as well.  I preordered the new HP last month, because you just can't beat a 40% discount.  Well, except at Half-Price Books, and I'd have to wait forever for it to show up there.

I've been reading "The Outline of History" by H.G. Wells recently. Got the 1930 edition for 9 bucks off eBay a few months ago. It's slow going, though, because of Work/Girlfriend. Here's my reading list right now:

-"The Outline of History"
-Finish "The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde"
-"The Late Shift" by Bill Carter
-"The Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire" by Edward Gibbon
-"Tales From Jabba's Place"
-"The Complete Works of Edgar Allen Poe"
-Part three of the "War of the Ancients Trilogy" when it comes out.
-Diablo "The Dark Road"

Along with any books I have to read for university this Fall, that should keep me busy till Febuaryish.   :p

Got my confirmation from Amazon today that HBP was shipped... but they said they "cannot guarantee it will arrive on July 16th"... bastards.  It damn well better. I know they're just covering their butts, but when I preordered it said if it didn't arrive on the 16th I'd get my money back, even if it was delivered the next day. I'm going to remain optimistic and trust that it will come on time.  Still, not the end of the world, I've waited 2 years... what's another day?

Oops, I started a Harry Potter thread which got closed, and I didn't have time to edit my last message in it which you can't understand.

I didn't see this thread.

Anyways, are any of you getting there book at midnight? I'm not, the bookstore that i pre-ordered it at will be closed. I can only get it when they open tommorow, which is around 9:00.

So, I started reading "The Mermaid Chair" today. I don't know why, because it didn't seem like something I'd really enjoy, but it's actually turning out to be pretty good. It's one of those books that's so well-written and true-to-life that, even if it doesn't seem like a book you'd be interested in, the story just manages to draw you in anyway. Which is good. I'm about a hundred pages into it, and, while I guess I can't really review a book until I've read it completely, I have a feeling that it won't disappoint me or whatever. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

I bet it rocks, like all his stuff. You should check out the audio versions of his books. The ones he reads himself are excellent.

Kloudes: the hell? What was all that guaranteed or your money back stuff amazon has been shouting? Maybe they said what they did in the email because some people would still be pissed if it came late, even if they did get their money back? Or because they are bastards... I preordered on the last possible day (wednesday) but haven't gotten the "your book is ready to ship" confirmation email. double bastards!

Whenever my father is done desecrating it, I'll read Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson, the same guy who wrote Snow Crash. It's a little over one thousand pages, so it could take me a bit, especially with all the computergaming I've been doing. I'll probably cut back, seeing as how it's it's Neil Stephenson!

I just finished Wodehouse's Golf Omnibus.  It was good, but people keep saying it's his best work.  It isn't.  Sidney McMurdo isn't near the foil Spode is, and there's no hero to compare to Wooster.  Or Galahad Threepwood, for that matter.

Hmm...after watching the Daily Show tonight, I think I'll wait a day or two to pick up 1/2BP.  It sounds like it's going to be crazy, and the bookstore I go to is tiny and conducive to mob behavior.

I've read mostly all of Isaac Asimov's robot novels and as well as Karel Capek's play, RUR.

I'm also currently reading the graphic novel, Metropolis, by Osamu Tezuka.

I  Issac Asimov's novels.  I'm working on the Foundation trilogy/series right now (if only Foundation's Edge hadn't been checked out at the library, that is.)

Asimov's Foundation series (especially the original trilogy) makes for a fun read.

I've got to go out tomorrow and pick up the new HP book for the kids.  I promised the boy I'd get it for him on the first day if he'd read some of it to me.  That'll be good for his little brain.

I have the throngs of children everywhere I go - they're my personal throng.  Canadian major bookstores claimed they all stocked up heavily, I should have no problem acquiring HP&tHBP if I go early.

Ha ha ha.

Borders was jamed pack with people buying the HP book, people were waiting in line for 15 minutes to get it.

Me, I just walked over to the WH Smith bookshop in the part of the mall were nobody goes, picked up a copy, walked over to the counter paid the women and went on my way.

Plus they gave me a $5 discount coupon, for me to use on any book I buy next time I'm there. All in just under a minute. LOL.

Also, I'm half way through "Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy" should be finished in a day or two.

Picked up Harry Potter at the midnight pick up.

Friends, Mom, and I went to Barnes and Nobles (packed as expected, and might I add one of the guys working there had the hufflepuff robe on, and I said really loud "Hufflepuff is the Joke of Hogwarts!) [I'm a ravenclaw fan myself])

After waiting for 45 minutes of just getting through 1/4 of the Pre-Orders, we decided to find an alternative. We sat next to some people in the cafe who said there was some at walmart, and they went and picked 2 copies up for me and my friend steven.

Sweeet. Gonna start reading tommorow.

PS: Okay, there was 500 pre-orders at Barnes and Noble's. We didn't have pre-orders. I was number 257 for the regular orders. (For some reason, steven got 56).

Well, finished reading Half-Blood Prince.  I have to say, it was pretty damn good.  Not a lot I didn't expect, except for one development with Harry and a certain [Descriptive Phrase is Above Your Security Clearance, Citizen] which seemed, all in all, rather poorly developed.  Also, I believe the word "snogging" was used more in this novel than in any other work of fiction ever.  I wonder if actual British teenagers say it that much, or if it's just middle-aged kindergarten teachers who think they do.

That's not really a spoiler is it?  I'm not telling you who's doing the snogging.  It probably is a spoiler to tell you you won't be surprised, at least by the end of the novel.

And finally, for everyone who was as annoyed during the last novel by Emo-Harry, I will tell you that he is replaced by the end of this novel...with Spiderman-Harry.  Seriously, the resemblance is uncanny.

Anyhow, I'm not going to post who t3h pr|nc3 is, not even in spoiler tags.  Someone else can ruin it for you.

Did someone get upset because Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, I hear there's a sequel in line - Harry Potter and the Artist Formerly Known as the Half-Blood Prince, was too above her reading level?   :p

So how about the lesser known, more modernistically relevant Harry Potter books such as Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Abu Gharib.

Also did you hear about those 14 Canadian children who bought the new book days beofre its official release from a shop when they shouldn't have. JK Rowling and co. decided to put an injunction out against the children forbidding them to read their own book. What happens if they refuse is unclear. I mean the entire Hutton Report was leaked to The Sun, we should put Bloomsbury in charge of national defence.

All jokes courtesy of The Now Show and Mock The Week. I'm unoriginal.

@Nerd-O: Yes we do. Also shagging.

I feel annoyed with "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince", mainly because it is shorter than "Goblet of Fire" and "Order of the Phoenix". And what a cheap ending, eurgh, the look on his face...

I'm British and not once have I used the word snogging. Whether it is because I spend my free time under bridges burning small children / on a futurama internet forum or whatever, however I can not be called a loser seeing as they all waited until they were 15/16 to get "snogged".

One more thing: Spiderman-Harry? I think the book would've been so much more amusing if it had just been Spiderman that Harry became.

Oh, and I'm going to lord the fact the I know who The Prince is over you all until I get bored, realising you all know as well.

Eurgh, the look on his face....

Yeah, that was what I meant.

But my bookstore had a midnight opening (which I didn't know about at the time of posting that thread) that i went to and got Half-Blood Prince.

It is a very good book.

And Krokei I was wondering why the hell British people would say snogg instead of kiss. I'm sure that they said kiss in the other books instead of snogg.

And if you try to figure out who the Half-Blood pince is and if you have read all the other books it is most likely you will assume you know who it is.

I'm on page 440ish and I can't put the book down.

@ newhook: So cruel, and thus, so incredibly funny. That'll teach people to have faith in mankind!

Anyway, I read "Love Story" the other day. I have no idea why that is--just felt like it, I guess. Feel free to mock me if you wish (it'll save me the trouble of doing it myself).

I can't explain why I like this book so much. I mean, it's kind of corny and runs the risk of becoming one big sap-fest; there's virtually no conflict at all (well, I guess there's a physical one towards the end, but there's no actual conflict between the romantic counterparts); and it's actually pretty anti-climactic, when you think about it. (The first sentence in the book is "What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died?" I mean, c'mon, people--if you're surprised by how the story turns out, then you should really just stop reading altogether, and live a nice, quiet, simple existence among the goats.)

And, on top of all that, it's not particularly well-written. There are moments of redundancy (and it's hard to tell if they're intentional or not), and there are some half-jokes that come off as more than half-crappy. But, there are some good jokes, and, in the end, you really do feel bad for the guy.

Sure, it's true what they say: if you've read the book, then you've seen the movie (or vice versa), but that makes sense when you consider the fact that Erich Segal wrote his screenplay, then adapted it into this book (the fact that the latter came out first was just a happy coincidence, I guess).

Maybe that's why I can accept some of the flaws in the writing, I don't know. All I really know is that I like the book.

And also that I'm crazy for liking the book.

I read a book today.  It was a handbook they gave me.  Basically it said: You don't follow the rules and you get disciplinary (action).  Sometimes it didn't even have the word action there.  Someone told me I was the first one he'd seen that came in and actually read the damn thing.  Which probably makes sense, I can't possibly seeing someone else reading that sort of dribble... unless they were incredibly bored... and even then.... well..... yeah.
