This thread is for talking about the Great Discworld series that's been around since the late seventies early eighties.

Discworld is the spawn of D&D parady,British Humor and a good dose of Terry's deseased imaganation. mixed together in a big pot.
Whens 'Nightwatch' going to be realeased...?

And here's some Hex errors.

Nurdy, you just had to start this thread, didn't you...

By the way, the word "deaseased" (which isn't a word), is that suppose to be "diseased" or "deceased"?

I've only read one book from the Discworld series and it was called 'Mort' I really enjoyed it. It was funny and nothing like I've ever read before. I'd definately like to read another. Which do you guys recommend?   :)

My favourite books are those of the City Watch. I've only played the first Discworld game, and that was really good  :D

I have read all of the Diskworld Novels, and played the first part of the first game but my game crashed and I am too lazy to start over.

Here is a page with the reading order

Of the new books, The theif of time is a death book and should go after Hogfather, Last Hero is after the last continant, although I would recomend reading a couple of watch books before reading it. Night Watch (Which is out right now) Is probobly a night watch book... and The Amazing Maurice goes almost anywhere, although a character from Reaper Man appears in it.

As I said Night Watch is now out, I have a hold at my local libary, I should get my hands on it in a month or two.

::edit::
The Watch books are the best although the Witch and Death books are also very good. The Wizard series... Interesting Times is very good but the rest are just ok.

My favorites are the Wizard books and the Watch books, with the Witches close behind.

But I've kinda notices a repetitive trend... an idea from the modern world invades the Discworld, and everyone gets obsessed with it, and it brings some abstract horror along with it that has to be stopped. It's getting that I kind of find myself ignoring the plot and just enjoying the jokes.

'Er...what is this thing called?' said Colon, as he followed the Patrician up the ladder
'Well, because it is submersed in a marine environment I've always called it the Going-Under-The-Water-Safely Device,' said Leonard, behind him. *Thinking up good names was, oddly enough, one area where Leonard Quirm's genius tended to give up. 'But usually I just think of it as the Boat.'

 :laff:
the "the Boat" bit is a wonderful bit too, because it doesn't matter if you fail to spot it, but it's quite a laugh if you do.  :D

I quite liked the Death Series,Reaper Man is one of my favourites.

"What is this thing, anyway?" said the Dean, inspecting the implement in his hands. "It's called a shovel," said the Senior Wrangler. "I've seen the gardeners use them. You stick the sharp end in the ground. Then it gets a bit technical."

Ah,The UU Wizards.Senoir old men with foot problems.I also like 'Deans ability to keepn using the word cool untill it gets quite annoying.

The problem with the Wizard series is the fact that the UU staff keeps on changing throughout the first 3 or so books, Once the real staff shows up (I think it is in Moving Pictures) the stories get much more intersting.

Some other good Discworld quotes
"Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life."

"'Chapter Fifteen, Elementary Necromancy'", she read out loud. "'Lesson One: Correct Use of Shovel...'"

Racism was not a problem on the Discworld, because -- what with trolls and dwarfs and so on -- speciesism was more interesting. Black and white lived in perfect harmony and ganged up on green.

About Nobby...
He was said to have the body of a twenty-five year old, although no one knew where he kept it.

My favorite series overall is the watch.  My favorite book, however, is Carpe Jugulum.  In fact, my favorite Discworld moment is in it.

(As best as I can remember)
"An ax?  That's not a holy symbol!"
"Let's make it holy."

A question - I've seen Discworld animated DVDs - Witches Abroad and Soul Music.  Are they worth picking up off Amazon.com?

Discworld is entertaining, no doubt. But it seems to be getting mildly stale. It's like watching a kid's saturday morning cartoon - make sure that everything's back to normal at the end. You know that the good guys will win, everything will go back to normal till next episode / book.

I've seen those on TV and didn't think they were brilliant - so much better to stick with the books.
However, the DVDs may have all sorts of cool stuff on them I don't know about.

It may be, but I can't do it.  You have to have a brain that thinks randomly - it's not even logical.  Lately, I have way too many things in my journal, and it takes ages to find out any hints for what to do next.  However the butler is really funny

I might as well put my .02$ on the movies. I have only seen Wyrd Sisters, The character design is strange very angular. Granny looks great though and I like her design here with the goggles more then the Paul Kidby giant hat pin design. Magrat looks horrible, I always pictured her as very, very plain. In the movie she looks just ugly. I am not going to bring up The Librarian and Greedo...
The voice acting is bad, every line is said very slowly with long pauses, I always thought of Discworld dialog as very quick, back and forth. Again Granny's voice was good and Christopher Lee is now the voice I hear when I read Death's lines.
The pacing is strange they kept a lot faithfull to the book, but it was a little too much. It seemed at times to be missing the point of some scenes.

All in all I am glad I watched it, it was entertaining and worth a rental. I don't think the DVD has any major extras...

My bf just got me into Discworld a while back. I love the Watch  :D

"Nobby - disqualified from the human race for shoving."

The witches are good too, and Death is such a dote, I feel quite sorry for him. Haven't started much on the wizards yet.

So.... is it just me or is Death taking more and more of an intrest recently? He used to be very distant, remote, cold, but he's showing up in person for a whole lotta people, and he's developing a sentimental streak. Edit: (Yes I'm sad to be thinking of this).

::uses thread necromancy::

Just finished The Wee Free Men the newest Discoworld book. I have to say that I liked it. I think that Terry writing the Young Adult books was a great idea, it allows him to rethink his writing style a little bit and looses the staleness that the last couple of Discworld novels have had.  The books didn't feal too much like "young adult" books, Terry pulled some punches here and there, but there are also a lot of scenes where he didn't (like the cannibalism of the rats in Maurice)

Apparantly Point and Click is officially dead, so the future for proper Discworld Games look Barran.

I read Neil Gaimen & Pratchett's Good Omens last year and throught it was great.  I also saw the cartoon of Wyrd Sisters and would really like to read the book.  I reently got a lot of Discworld books for the bargin section of a local bookstore (The Rincewind Trilogy [Sorcery, Eric and Interesting Times], The Fifth Elephant, The Truth, Theif of Time, and Night Watch).  I'm reading Sorcery right now.

Actually that doesn't really spoil anything because you're going to know it before you read the book anyway.
