Actually, there's a smidgen of Fry/Leela interaction at the end...

Then again, considering the "Anthology Of Interest"-like preview for Bender's Game, maybe any significant Fry/Leela stuff will have to be resolved in Into The Wild Green Yonder.

And that was all masterfully put, mister.

And, according to what's being said about the movie, there goes the Leela-showing-jealousy idea, apparently.

I was thinking earlier and realised something. It seems like Fry dating this Coleen is very out of character. Especially considering that almost everything he did in BBS had something to do with Leela or her Narwhal substitute. I'm probably not the only one who thinks it's strange? Though my "Coleen is conected to Yivo somehow" theory hasn't been proven/disproved yet, the stuff I'm hearing from people who've seen it don't suggest that I'm right. That would be like the Wright brothers spending years trying to make a working aircraft and then changing their mind and trying to invent the pocket fisherman or something, a week before their successful flight.

It's not so much out-of-character, as it is perhaps more first and second season in-character. As I think someone said somewhere, it seems like they're taking a huge step away from Fry-and-Leela this time and going back more to when Fry did go out with other people. (And fish, and radiators).

I know but I mean out of his current state of character. Then again apparently continuity means NOTHING to these people anymore.

Although if you wanted to read more into it than is really there, you could say that he's trying to force himself to move on from a non-responsive Leela... or even on some subconscious level trying to make her jealous.

Earth weakling.

Anyway, the whole premise of this movie is parallel universes, right? How do we know that perhaps this movie, perhaps even every movie, doesn't involve a separate parallel universe, all of which will cumulatively collapse and bring all storylines together during the Wild Green Yonder?

You mean like Ruth and Naomi?

And Noemi said to her: Behold thy kinswoman is returned to her people, and to her gods, go thou with her. She answered: Be not against me, to desire that I should leave thee and depart: for whithersoever thou shalt go, I will go: and where thou shalt dwell, I also will dwell. Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God. The land that shall receive thee dying, in the same will I die: and there will I be buried. The Lord do so and so to me, and add more also, if aught but death part me and thee.  ~ Ruth 1:15-17

Right now I'm writing a scene between Yancy and Leela. Hypothetical: would it work?  ;)

Let's see - two miserable human beings who think that power and wealth are the things that bring happiness in life?

What's nice about the internet is that it becomes difficult to notice certain subtle nuances.  It's a neat trait to have.

Yancy was miserable and longed for power & wealth?  Unless I'm horribly confused, I really don't recall that....  He did have a thing for needing to be better than his younger brother, but I'd attribute that to sibling rivalry (Why did BBS touch Luck of the Fryish????).  But as he's portrayed at the end of LotF, he seems like a humbled family man who cares about the important things in life.

I think Leela believing money and power are keys to happiness is a bit of a stretch too... but not quite as much so.

Read the story, Winna.  Yancy is pissed at Fry for "stealing" his life.  A life with a trophy bride, cornering the stock market and becoming the richest man in the world.

Sounds pretty materialistic to me.

As for Leela, from various episodes:

"I'm dating Chaz, he's a very important man."

"If you were my kids, you'd get quite the talking to from your father, the Senator."

"I want to date somebody who everybody else doesn't think is crummy.  I deserve that."

The Hero-worship she gave Zapp Brannigan before she realized he was a dumb, gross gorilla.

Sorry, Leela likes the idea of being attached to somebody wealthy and powerful.  She likes the idea of being wealthy and powerful herself.

I have to say that Arch's story so far is making Leela a not very likable or sympathtic person.  She's taken every cheap shot she can at Fry, dissing him about Evila, then never appologizing to him when Evila struck again.  She rides Fry's ass whether he deserves it or not and only sees the negative things about him.

Sounds just like a woman I almost married.

I didn't realize we were talking about the story when talking about Yancy (accidentally typed fry for some reason)... from canon he seems less likely to be that type of person.

I said not quite as much so on Leela.  She's certainly got some negative attributes, but she's got other characteristics that seem to outweigh that.  She lives very modestly and is known to have good friendships with people who aren't rich & powerful.... her and zoidberg get along, right?  I think the negative things are stereotypical woman attributes... something from the Sex & the City or the Desperate Housewives.... Leela nags a lot too and is nosy.  But you made your point... there's definitely a side of her that feels entitled to things she doesn't necessarily deserve.

I like to think our opinions on these characters are rather more influenced by who we are than who they are. Most TV show characters are erchetypes - they have very few actual identifiable character traits, at least to start with. And often to end with. Most of what we see there is what we actually imbue in the character ourselves, filling in all the details around what's actually there with the baggage and prejudices of our own lives.  :)
