So Deca is like a summer guy. Hey col-d, if you don't like cops give Iraq a try; it's pretty devoid of an effective police force!

Too bad some of you younger folks have had some tough family experiences and what sounds like poor examples of married parents, but don't generalize about it. Fry_B speaks the truth; hear him well. Sure, marriage can be a trap if both don't put the effort in to keep it going but it can be, is supposed to be and at least half the time is a warm cocoon that lets the two of you escape the worries of the outside world and lean on each other for support.

Man, how did this become a pre-marriage couseling session? So anyway, in L&R, from where does Leela's disgusted reaction to the sappy, sentimentality of the Romanticorp couple come? Is she just a little more sickened than the rest of us or is she jaded to romance since it doesn't seem to work out for her?

There was something a tad fake about the RomantiCorp couple...

As much as I love my wife, nobody would ever see us acting like that.

I thought Iraq had been overrun by a vast, multi-national 'police force', which has made it a wonderful place to live. All praise to the World Police in all their benevolent sublety. Anyway, don't wanna get into my views on that.

Leela seemed a lot like me in that scene in L&R... that is if I were a chick... (don't start Ovidiu  :p). I dunno... for me, jaded yes... but also as a writer constantly striving toward originality, I find such displays to be the height of cliched tedium.

I thought about the whole generalising it thing, but it still doesn't change the fact that you should be able to do such things as "escape the worries of the outside world and lean on each other for support" when you're not married. If you're willing to be with and stay with someone, why not just be with and stay with them?

Stuff about Leela's reaction to the sickening couple in L&R
Haha, the last time that episode was on TV I had the same reaction as her, even though I'd forgotten that's how she was going to react. Made me laugh. I think it was just that they really were terribly sickening...If I started acting like that with someone I think I'd opt to be put down.

Ok, CA in view of your history I understand you. However that rage will get you nowhere, law enforcers have power and they like to use it too in most cases. Don;t give them a reason to. You should've lived in a commie country for a while. You learn how to get by andgive them the finger - that's the best part.

Yeah, Police is necessary in principle. The human enforcers however are people (as someone - any1else?) said. And I believe the hiring criteria are pretty low. Look at the AU ads: for Police, for ASIO, for the army (The Army. The Edge. (Of Insanity)). No Offence FENIX - but that's the truth. [Gets pi**ed now]As for the citizens having RPGS - mate, your current bosses, esp the Chimp, created that situation. I know the pre-US Iraq - it was nothing like what it is now. You have f*cked up that country beyond recognition. Before, it was one dictator with one family and one system. You could in fact walk the streets at night in Baghdad during Saddam, and women could wear dresses and even miniskirts - now can you imagine that in the new order FENIX? Now it's anyone's land. And soon US will pull out (like it did before in Vietnam) leaving behind Hell. Good going. And I'm so proud our Johnnie following suit like a dog... Ok I'll stop here. It's out of topic already but it is what all humans with some traces of intelligence think.. Deep Down. Just that - if an invader (think LRR-style, but meaner) was occupying my country, I'd know what to do. Damn quick. Until I was dead or it was .

[ColdAngel, stop grinning, think of Russians or Chinese or Arabs coming to your town and enforcing their order]

So law enforcement is good...in good measure, like anything in life. Cr*p. I made myself sad.

[@anyoneelse] And AnyOneElse, I am now sorry I aksed that question. And I do not know how it is to have a sad family history, if anything, my parents pampered me so much I got sick of it. But the effect is NOT that I will not pamper my baby. I will, but in good measure. Going to extremes is not good. But time will make it all good. If you give it a chance. You promise you will give it a thought? You're too smart not to.

You are a human. Along history, some humans have known to be married. In fact, a lot. Because making it official is a public 'hear, hear. I LOVE this person and I want to spend the rest of my life with it. And I want y'all to KNOW, whether you like it or not'.

The rest is in the process of LIFE amd MATURING. You can keep asking the same questions, which are clear cut and logical, and the answer will be always illogical, fuzzy,... lame and heartwarming. And one day you may accept it. Or not. But for sure, you'll lose out on a unique experience.

Now go and get a husband, girl!

(Oh yeah I forgot. There's the biologiocal aspect too. The clock. Procreating. Need for a safe haven. Marriage. Sounds bad but it's a factor so I have to mention it. As a scientist I cannot help it).

I started blathering on but I deleted it because it's not the thread for it.  :p I'll just cut to the more on-topic part.

People are having children these days in many ways that don't involve marriage...and in Futurama I'm sure Leela wouldn't have any trouble having kids if that's what she really wanted. Especially if she really likes Fry. If there's no one else that either of them want to be with they should be able to say that to each other and know it. Why should they have to say it to everybody? It's like trying to put a safety lock on to make sure you or your partner isn't going to run off with someone else. If you don't want to be with anybody else, you won't be. Why should you have to get married to tell yourself or anybody else that?

Fry_B:
Rage gets me everywhere. Rage is the only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning.
Rage is pure. It asks nothing of me, but propells me onward. It keeps me warm and lends me strength.
Rage is my friend.

But I have never suggested an end to Law Enforcement, only that law enforces itself somewhere away from me. I'm not part of your society. I don't interfere with your world so it should in turn leave me the hell alone. I don't care what it does when I'm not around. Jackboots can crush the skulls of the dead into powder for all I care; it's not my business.
I have not advocated anarchy, only an end to specific persecution of me as an individual. It's really very simple and small-scale, because I don't rightly care about anything bigger when I'm being wronged. They've unfairly fucked me over time and time again and I hate them for it. In response I will never cooperate with a police officer, nor afford them any curtesy or respect. They are my enemies, there is no room for expansion to that statement, no philisophical reflections of societal analysis. It's me and them.

I love you for your Iraq views, I share them also, however FENIX is apparently supposed to be a British Royal Marine, so if true Bush isn't technically his boss... but rather his country's boss. Ours too of course, but I didn't sign up to fight America's pointless wars for her.
I said for a long time before the Iraq war that Saddam was the only guy in history who has been able to keep peace between the tribes, and that sometimes it really is better the devil you know. He was a bastard who sat on his throne and made no overt action for more than a decade. I knew, and said it many times, to topple him would be to replace him with a hundred warring motherfuckers each more murderous and fanatical that Saddam would know how to be - this is not the path to 'Freedom'... but of course Freedom is really the last thing on the mind of the American ruling class.
Saw a documentary on pre-war Iraq by an independent filmmaker showing life there, free from the propoganda of the USA that it was some kind of demonic pit of evil. People were actually relatively happy, many genuinely loved Saddam in an almost Castro-esque way, for right or wrong - who cares? Point being, the only thing they feared, and the only constant looming threat to their wellbeing, was the United States of America, that bastion of imperialist filth that will mercilessly trample any who do not bend to its will.

We digress.... SHARPLY.

Fry_B, I agree with the fact that as soon as we go there will be hell to pay, and that MAYBE (I'm saying matbe coz in my position to say we shouldn't be here would really upset my men) we should never have gotten ourselves involved.  I agree with Joel in stating that it probably was a much calmer and generally peacefull place till we marched in guns blazing for a cause not our own and kicked the bloody bee hive. I often hear my guys asking "Why are we doing this? What has it got to do with us?" and I have to reassure them that they are doing the right thing, for the right reasons. Yeah say what you like Fry_B bout the entry tests and hiring criteria, I know anyone can be a Grunt, hell, I mean I got in didn't I! I vowed to serve my God (well... I don't believe in him and I don't see how this is "God's Will" ) My Queen (we love you Liz) and my country, and I have done so with Merit and distinction.  "Ours is not to reason why, ours it but to do or die".

I have seen, first hand, what some of these "people" are capable of, and I have seen what went on during the reign of Saddam, so don't try and lecture me about how nice it was.

Ok, I admit that the things with the cops not being here was a tad over-selous, I just don't see why you hate them so much, most of the cops I know back home are pretty nice guys, I was merely staing they are a necessity and I kinda got carried away *smacks his own hand*.

Anyway, back to topic.....

Most kids these days are born outside of marriage, or in a marriage that doesn't last very long. I have none of my own, but my Mother was one of TWELVE siblings, and she was the youngest. I have many nieces and nephews (some are older than me) and I see the joy and pain having kids can bring. I know I can't talk from experience, but it takes great physical and emotional effort to raise a child in this world.  Now I've been to a fair share of weddings (about 23, BIG family) and know the ins and outs of the procedings (well... for christian weddings anyway) and most have a really good time.

That and if kids are born out of wedlock you know they gonna be Bastards.

Marriage started back in the male dominated days of primitive cave peoples. It was just a way for one male to keep a woman all to himself and only him mating with her.

Over the centuries marriage got more integrated into society and became something more deep and relgigous then jsut simply staking out your mating rights, which is how marriage started out.

Yeah, the first marriages were 'marriage by capture'. The male caught the female and wanted to marry her so suddenly they were married.

FENIX, look, I believe it is better not to discuss this here; You may have bbeen better off ignoring my post. I am in fact sorry now I started this - although in fact you started it with your refs to Iraq, until somehow one ref pushed my buttons. But I understand that is your life now and your job is to go there and do it. However, you chose your job and I can see you also believe what you do is right. Good for you. I beg to differ. I apologize if I have mistaken you for another Force, but of crs you realise that most of what I posted is still true.

You have seen how it was before the first and second Gulf Wars? First hand?
I did not say it was nice. I compared what it was then with what it is now, from the point of view of local men and especially women. And from first hand experience. Kurds excepted - but ask the Turks how they treat them, and they are to enter the EU, not be sentenced to death.
[/small]

===========================================
As for most kids being born these days outside marriage or from marriages that don't last - do you refer to the whole World? Or just Western-type cultures that really count? If I applied your view to my country of origin I would say 'Most kids are born from marriages, marriage last a resonable amount of time and a lot of women that marry are in fact virgins and hey, most also have degrees in technical areas'. Or that was the case, now that the Western values are gradually 'embraced'.

Sorry to sound skeptical, but consider that there may be some truth in what I say.
