In Bicyclops I was touched at the end when Leela says "You're a true friend, Fry". It's not often she openly acknowleges their friendship. More often she suffers it and pretends like it doesn't exist.

You'd think, if Leela always ends up sleeping with those on-the-surface-they-seem-okay-at-first types who are horrible 3 seconds later, that if she notices this she'd realise those who she doesn't think are great at first but later warms to...would be...decent enough people to stick with. Who she could trust not to kick her about like 'the others'.

Fry's inherent idiocy, however, may play in has favour on that score. Because he's not really smart enough to generate any kind of pretense he is by default open and honest - what you see is what you get. As he put it in my last fanfic:
"I only know how to tell the truth. Lies don't come easy to me."
In this way his lack of the delta brainwave may turn out to be an unlikely advantage again, because if Leela can see his heart in a way she can't with others, then she'll feel more comfortable with him and less afraid of hurt. There's nothing sinister hiding in the shadows with him because he's too dumb to hide it; there's no surprises, it's just him, warts and all.

Fry is the only one who she might actually love, purely because of love itself.
He tries to show her he loves her but shes afraid that if she does give him a chance then he'll be like the rest, so she thinks that if she doesn't give him a chance then shes saving herself a broken heart.

But Leela reminds me of me in the sense that she's awkward about how she looks, so if someone tells her she's not ugly I can understand her difficulty in believing it, although wanting to believe..like X-Files...

The female Leela's problem is purely medical. Soon she will drop her eggs and they will hatch, and all will be well.

She should do what I want to do, just become a floating entity of some kind. Then she wouldn't have to worry about what she looks like or how she spends her time.
