And Shiny, when you read my last fic, you didn't say anything about the 'X-Files' reference I included! I did that just for you! (Pouts)

Don't pout.

I should mention that I'm not always the most observant, aware person on the planet.  And that even when I do catch things, sometimes I forget them by the time I get to the commenting.  And this last month my free time and free memory has been encroached upon drastically by work stuff, so I'm not at my most perspicacious, or energetic, right now.

So tell me what I missed, and I'll admire it now.  ;)

Hmmm...

So, that reminds me... Shiny, any idea for the next thread's title? Ooo, what about JBERGES? He'd know one. Or... Say, here's an idea! (Just one, actually, I know I've got more somewhere. Probably in the back of my closet. You know how that's like, when you've got all that Great Stuff, but no matter how hard you clean, the Great Stuff stays at the back, and the Not-So-Great Stuff just keeps comin' and comin' and comin'...)

'Eat your heart out, Mulder and Scully!'...

Yeah, it's bad, I know. I just had the idea on the spot. Of course, we could always resort to 'Axe Shiny' or 'Shiny is Katey Sagal'...

Now to clean out my closet...

Wow, look at what I found!

Now that's what I call 'Great Stuff'!

Eh-hem...

Leela's sphere of unrealistic, indefeatable confidence is punctured. Thankfully before something really bad happened, like being crushed by a gigantic foot.

You know, that effect kinda loses something without the Liberty Bell March...

So, to discuss... When did this sphere of confidence begin to overinflate?

(No comment from Xanfor as of yet. I need to see the evidence first...  ;) )

My dear Xanforth, it's been a LOOOOOONNNG time since the pilot for me.  The only thing I remember is bits and pieces, like how annoyed I was that someone apparently thought that "missing time" meant that Time itself went "missing" (rather than simply one's memory of a stretch of time was missing), and Scully's somewhat embarrassed tone of voice as she repeated Mulder's nickname for the higher-ups, and stuff like that.

I beg to differ, I think that WAS something really bad.  We're all just lucky it wasn't something permanently bad.  I think the fact that Leela's mind created a storyline of Fry being dead means that she knew how bad it was, and was determined to wallow in maximum badness as a form of self-punishment.  She probably would have remained comatose forever, her subconscious putting her through repeated, endless hell, if Fry hadn't been so desperately diligent in trying to get through to her.  *sniff*

(Oh, and speaking of: my favorite icon is the "miss you" one...but they ALL totally rock.  Good work, fryandlemon!)

All right, then, some suggestions for new thread title:

I don't WISH to kill you, HS, it's just an uncontrollable reaction brought on by the radioactive dose of mutagenic dark matter tachyotrons I received while rescuing a puppy who had fallen down a mysteriously glowing well in the Mystic Mountains of Kamal when I was struck by a mysterious bolt of purple-black lightning during a meteor storm caused by a simultaneous solar and lunar eclipse on Friday the 13th with Chiron in Twelfth House.

It just sometimes activates when I fear that the fact that some people like me will cause me to come to the attention of others who don't, who will then mock and roll their eyes at me and say "who does this upstart wannabe 'Shiny' chick think she is, anyway? Time to bring her down!"

It's not a rational fear...comes from being the female Napoleon Dynamite of my time.  I'm more or less over it already (I really just couldn't resist the "Hulk/Destructor" riff  ;) ).

And I officially promise NOT to kill anyone over the next thread title...no matter how much Valium I must consume to keep that promise.

Really.

No, no, no.  No more death matches.  I'm past all that.  Later, Blood.

As for Leela's overconfident streak, I see it as more of a "hot button/you callin' me chicken?!" reaction.  And it has caused problems before...like generating the entirety of Acts 2 & 3 in "Raging Bender," or much of the emotional undercurrents in "Cyber House Rules" (where Leela had a shot at being "normal" and "unremarkable," which must have seemed very attractive in a restful way after feeling she to be so extra-ordinary just to be treated like a normal person all her life).  It just had never caused major organ replacement surgery or a near-permanent coma before.  ("Two week coma, new spleen, no big whoop." ~Xanfor   :p )

And Pedro la Loco is the only person who doesn't like me HERE. On THIS board.

So far.

The 31st century is a rather mysogynistic time. Leela as a woman, and with the added issues of being an alien/genetic mutation AND an unloved orphen, would have to work really hard to gain any kind of respect in the male-dominated genetically-elitist world. This strong pressing need to excel in order to transcend perceived weaknesses and social stigma would make her drive toward undertaking hazardous jobs and generally biting off more than anyone could reasonably chew. Added to which it's also the reason she has such thick emotional walls around herself - as a woman/mutant/orphen she already has so much to prove without appearing fragile in any way... that particular facet of her insecurities is what vexes Fry so. What she needs to realize is that it's okay to acknowledge her own limitations and embrace them - that way she can start to do the same for other people, namely that red-headed moron.
All in all, Leela's character has a lot in common with Agent Dana Scully in The X Files (I draw the parallel only because I'm an avid XF fan) - Scully is a little lady in the male-dominated FBI trying to prove herself as a woman and to her family who disapproved of her career choice. She forever goes to great lengths to conceal emotion and prove herself ready and able to take on anything the job throws at her, even when it's too much; and she pushes to always be right, even when her science cannot be reasonably applied.

Yeah, I'm ranting. It's midnight and I ran out of coffee. I do this when I'm tired.

Yeah, no real biggie. The thing is, I'd've thought she'd've learned by now when to proceed and when not to. She's turned back when it's been too dangerous before. But... Here's Farnsworth telling them they can't do it. That would strike a nerve, I can tell. But Fry... Fry usually is the one who says they can do it. Apparently, he was the only one with any sense at the time. And did Bender worry? Oh no, 'cause he's Bender. Fearless and made'a metal. Nothing can harm him, not even a space wasp bee sting. Sure, it would hurt, maybe cost a few hundred dollars in repairs, but nothing he couldn't snitch off his friends while they were in front of him running away from a space bee that Bender didn't need to fear so much 'cause he was made'o metal so he wasn't running as fast as them. Of course, afterwards he'd speed up, maybe even attempt to rescue them, because deep down there's a law or two of robotics. Anyway, that explains Bender. So all and all, The Sting really was a very important episode. Leela learned that she doesn't need to prove herself to everybody at every opportunity, and like Coldangle said, should embrace her limitations and work with them accordingly. Afterall, a person without problems isn't a person. And if a person doesn't have problems, s/he's got a big problem. So everyone's a person, and they should all act appropriately, safely, and intelligently. Also, Leela saw a peek into how much she really cared for Fry. For example, dressing up like a widow at his funeral. When Ralph Snart first saw The Sting, he thought Fry was Leela's husband from the way she was reacting. She did look like a widow, didn't she? She really missed him. Also in this episode, we can see how much Fry cares. He jumped in front of her, didn't he? Finally, even just on comedic terms, this was a good episode. For example, the dialogue between Hermes, Farnsworth, Leela, Fry, and Bender at the very beginning is the best comedic banter ever. It is a model. Literally, a punchline in every line. Priceless. Priceless. Oh, I sooo don't need coffee. More threads, more threads!

The End
