If Futurama had continued, do you think Scruffy would have played a bigger role? seeing as he featured more and more towards the later series.

he would of continued in the same vein. if it were my choice he would never have featured at all.

I think he would have been akin to Lenny & Carl in The Simpsons, in that he would not actually have any relevance to the plot but would pop up more often than not. I think the writers probably only put him in as a one/two-shot joke and just grew fond of him, kind of like half of the Simpsons cast (mentioning no names, *cough*Disco Stu*cough*)

More of the same, I would think.  I can't really see Scruffy becoming a more developed character; and if he did, it would kind of ruin the whole idea.

I think that Scruffy was hilarious, but they used the whole "Who are you?" thing too much. You'd think that they would remember after asking his name three times. But his "second" bit was hilarious  :laff:

I chose the second option, but I think both of the first two are actually accurate: he would have appeared more, but only remained a supporting character.  I doubt they would have centered an episode around him or anything, but you never know.

Now, Xanthor, on the other hand...

He would probably continue as the same character he always was. A line to make my point:

I choose option 2. Scruffy was a support character. He always was and ever shall be. He was pretty hilarious, though. The "I'm Scruffy, the janitor." thing was great, too. I never thought it was overused at all.

silence! i concur.

i loved the way scruffy would say stuff...

"schedule conflict"
"scruffy's gonna die the way he lived"
"scruffy's rollin' out a large pill"

ok, i'm sorry, i couldn't resist.

If you remember in the first seasons, Amy, Hermes, and Zoidberg first started off as minor characters while Fry, Leela and Bender went off on some adventures.  Amy, Hermes, and Zoidberg were just around for humor.  But by season two you had episodes focusing on them more.

Zoidberg: WMIBACIL
Hermes:HHRHGB
Amy: WMIBACIL

I think if the show continued then the same thing may have happened to Scruffy, only it probably wouldn't make him a regular character as Amy, Hermes and Zoidberg. or would it?

Although Scruffy did get a larger role in the Comics (Issue #10), and some comics reflect un-used episode ideas, which could have meant he'd have been used more in future eps, if they were made. However, I doubt they'd let him have such large a role in the actual eps, or at least not until Season 20+, when they'd probabaly be running low on ideas...

things like "boy i've never seen him so down.. or ever before" are funny, but he shouldn't say any more than that

On the DVD commentaries it states that Scruffy was a favourite of the writers, but because he speaks and acts so slowly, he can only be put in every so often otherwise the show gets too long. On that basis, I think that Scruffy would never get dropped, but he could never be any more than a bit player. Shame...

None of those- Scruffy was the enigma, he wasn't a supporting character- what aspects did he support? None. He was just there from time to time.

If Scruffy had any more screentime than a few seconds at a time it would ruin his character and the hillariousness of his non-sequitur appearances. The amount of scenes he got  in "Futurestock" was already pushing it.

I agree with Teral. He is one of those characters that works best in small doses. If he had an entire plot focussing around him, it would entirely ruin the character. For example, in "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings" his lines (I believe he had 3 or 4 of 'em) were good enough, and a good send-off to a funny character.

i think regardless of what should have happened if they still made futurama scrufy would have one episode and then carried on the way he always was. Incidently why do you think they didnt have scruffy and dwight from the beggining?

Well, Scruffy's first appearance was great, because he just sort of appeared there. Like we all should have noticed him, but we never did.  As for Dwight, it doesn't make a lot of sense to have Hermes's son wandering around where he works.

It could be due to the fact that, although Cubert was one of the earliest conceptions, it was only later decided that the character needed a friend so that there could be a new dimension to him.
In the case of Scruffy, he was probably never an original conception by the crew and, when it was decided that Planet Express should have a janitor, the character designed for "A Fishfull of Dollars" was perfect.

I think Scruffy's general randomness of appearances added a lot to his character, i can't see what they could do with him if they tried to make an episode based on his character

Scruffy's a good character, but I like him the way he is/was... and don't think theres any reason to include him more cause that'd just be irritating.

He could have become a more promenet member of the PE crew such as having him sit round the tables and what not but anything more would ruin it there are alot more peoples characters i would like to see developed besides Scruffys such as, "The Entire Robot Mafia"
