Ok, bear with me on this. It's a bit long...
First post btw.

Some time ago I wondered how large Leela's eyeball really "is" and if it could possibly fit inside her skull. So, one day when I had nothing better to do I decided to investigate:

I checked out numerous pics and captures and came up with this(assuming her head is 15cm across at eyelevel):

Not 100% accurate, but it serves my point:
With this data I could then calculate the radius of her eyeball to 6.5cm, thus a diameter of 13cm. Fair enough, also fits inside the aforementioned 15cm.

But eyes need muscles too, and a 13cm eyeball(assuming eyewater has the same density as regular water) weighs around 1.1kg, so they'd have to be quite big in order to shift that weight as fast as say in "300 big boys" when she notices her swimsuit's gone. The question is how big.
My best guess so far would be something like 1-2cm thick ones. This sums up to 15-17cm(one on each side), which makes it a very tight or impossible fit.

But then we haven't considered the fact that her eye is most likely non-spherical due to an ocular disorder(she wears lenses(err, lens), see "The why of Fry" ), which leads me to believe the following:
Leela is longsighted.

Why? Because longsighted people have eyes which are(if I understand correctly), well... Long. They are deeper than they are thick, which with the 1cm eye muscles would make it all quite possible.

Now, she might have poor depth perception, but what if this longsightedness is the actual cause of her crashing into the billboard every week? How's that for subtle joke?

edit:
No sig? Or did I just miss a checkbox somewhere...? I'll just add it manually for the time being

God, you really think things out. I didn't see the Why of Fry, so I don't know what this lense is.  Still, I see your point and I have to say you certainly know eyes!

Although calculating all that is a real effort. kudos

Ah, thanks for the positive feedback  :)

Calculating the radius was quite easy. The formula is as such(worked it out in a min or two, if you really want to know how, just ask):
r = (w² + b²) / 2b

Where w is half the width of the eye(6cm from 12cm) and b is how much it bulges(4cm).

It's a game. I suggest you read the press kit if you want to find out more: http://www.absynthinteractive.com/Online%20Press%20Kit%20page%201.htm

Also, anyone else than me have read/is reading "Pyramids"(the seventh book in the Discworld series) by Terry Pratchett? Kinda reminds me of "A pharoah to remember" in some parts(although the book was written like a decade or two ago)

Wow, nice work Tjoppen. I never really thought about that (muscles and their size), but yeah it sounds like an explanation. I don't think the staff intended it for a hidden joke though, but if they did they're far nerdier than I gave them credit for.  :)

This is the kind of thing David X. Cohen mentions on DVD commentaries, maybe you'll get a mention on Season 4 (unless they've done it)?

About the eye thing, her eye is drawn SO big, that its socket should take up the lion's share of her brain case. Whatever brain she does fit in her cranium, must be very efficient to accomodate her intelligence. Not only that, her sinuses should be small, flat, and oriented sideways with respect to everyone else's. Therefore, her voice should sound like she's holding her nose or has a very bad cold, very different from KS.

j w wimpy: I thought of it too, and it seems logical. Maybe the sinuses split to each side of the eye and then join together on the other side? In the lower left and right area of the eye there's quite enough space I think. They wouldn't have to be too flat.

aslate: What other non-round shape would it be then?

We did saw her skull in "How Hermes requestioned his groove back". I would post the grab I made, but I'm unable to find a Webhost that would allow me to do so. Anyway, her skull is different from a human one, keep in mind that

Welcome to peel! and an idea i came up with is: what if her eyehad something like mirrors or something wierd that would let her eye depth decrease, it doesnt have to be round that would also explain the eye problems and depth perception trouble  :D

Uh, speaking as a monocular human (no not like Leela, I'm just blind in one eye  :) )  Her lack of depth perception is directly related to her lack of a second eye.

In fact that's what make it so unlikly that there would be ANY one eyed ANYTHING, from an evolutionary perspective.

While one can use paralax and other effects to assist in judging the position and velosity of an object in a 3 dimensional space, it is NOT 100% accurate and a far cry from having stereo vision (which I used to have).

Which to me makes any "tight manuvering at high speeds" scene, such as the intro flight or the escape from the Near Death Star, all the more amazing.  I mean, if someone who really had no stereo depth perception pulled off that kind of flying they would be one KICK ASS pilot!

My father is blind in his right eye (earning him the nickname "Popeye" ). Like Leela at the cinema on the killer bot planet, he could not make sense of 3D movies. By the way, my dad's nickname resulted in me being known as Swee'Pea as a child. Now, I'm Wimpy...

Our dog is a cyclops too. And yeah, she has trouble catching things for instance. It's fun to tease her  :p (throw sausage pieces at her and watch her chomp air)

Hey, what if one would had more than two eyes? I wonder what that would be like..

There is a mutation known as Cyclocephaly. Possible it's known since the time of Ulysses (1,200 BC).
Sadly all known Cyclocephalian mutants were born dead, caused by a brain-illnes but ...
just all known mutants.
I mean 1 of 1,000 babys are born intersexual (not realy male or female) but no-one talks about it and so it's often totally unknown.
Knowing this, you can imagine that there can be living Cyclopes. Somewhere. Maybe in the Amazonas, Africa or just the Middle West.
It would be nice if anyone would search for an English article about Cyclocephaly.
But be warned: The Gulf War syndrom can also cause a kind of Cyclocephaly at the children of US soldiers who where 1991 in Iraq. There are a lot sites in the net about the GW-Syndomes and the pictures of the dead babys there are ...   :(
Well, Cyclocephaly ... Maybe in the future (guess when  ;)) medicine knows ways how to save Cyclocephalian mutants. Or simply the radioactivity of the canalisation of NNY will create a new variation of Cyclocephalian mutants who are able to live.

I don't know. that speed distance stuff isn't as depth perception heavy as it seems when your talking about a high speed space ship. The stuff is just too far away to make a judgement from the paralax of the eyes. And is moving much to fast. By the time it's in Depth perception range it's too late to do anything about it. It's the same reason people can be good at Driving videogames even though there is no depth perception. Scaling and direction of movement play a larger role at higher speeds.

As a test I once landed a Cessna 172 with one eye covered. It's do-able but distracting since it's not what you're nomaly used to.

Well, I think you are thinking I mean interstellar or interplanetary travel.  That's not what I mean, I'm talking about scenes like their escape from the Near Death Star, where Leela piloted a transport weaving it in and out and between huge moving arms.  Somewhat of the same kind of flying Luke and Leia did on the speeder bikes in the forest on Endor with Stormtroopers in hot pursuit.

On to another idea, while I guess this is ruled out by her tiny pupil, I found myself wondering if her night vision is better then average.  I wondered this because of the large size of the eye.

No in the Near death star they were still moving too fast for DP to come into account. Depth Perception is only effective about 20 feet. At the speeds they were going that's less then one second. Brain don't work that fast.

As for the Pupil it's more a Representation of a pupil. No ones ever gets larger or smaller.  Since there's no Iris refrence you have to make some assumptions to adapt the drawing to rationale. I would assume Leela would have a larger Aperture to accept light into her larger eye just baised on scale. And so her low light reception should be better.

What kind of Nerd are you Coop?
Sci-Fi is all about wasting time trying to explain stuff from shows that are total BS. It's fun!

And as for the oval thing. Perhaps her scalera (is that right? The white part of the eye)is flexable at the corners like the top's and bottom of your eyelid. her eye may be smaller in volume then it appears in size to be.
